Places to Visit in Coonoor

Sims Park
A botanical garden of around twelve hectares laid out on a slope in the middle of the town in 1874, in a semi-natural style that follows the contours rather than flattening them, with more than a thousand plant species including a good collection of conifers, magnolias and tree ferns. The annual fruit and vegetable show held here in May is a genuine local event rather than a tourist one. Visit in the morning. It is the one attraction actually inside Coonoor rather than outside it, it takes around ninety minutes, and it is a considerably calmer proposition than the Ooty botanical gardens on a long weekend.

Bangalore
Departure Point
Your journey to Ooty begins from Bangalore, the gateway to South India's most beloved hill stations. Pick-up is available from any part of the city — Koramangala, Electronic City, Whitefield, Hebbal, Yeshwanthpur, Marathahalli, or Majestic. The most common route out of Bangalore takes you onto NH275, the six-lane Mysore Expressway, which is one of the smoothest and best-maintained national highways in Karnataka. An early departure between 5 AM and 6 AM is strongly advised to clear Bangalore city limits before peak traffic begins. The first 50 km on the expressway are fast, comfortable, and lightly trafficked in the early hours, setting a pleasant tone for the journey ahead. Our drivers are experienced in choosing the optimal departure window and route based on real-time traffic conditions, ensuring that the first stretch of your Bangalore to Ooty road trip is efficient, calm, and enjoyable from the very first kilometre.

Mysore
City of Palaces
The first three hours are the fastest of the day, on six-lane expressway. Our drivers reach the pickup point fifteen minutes early and aim to be on the expressway before 6:15 AM, because everything downstream - the Bandipur gate and the ghat in daylight - depends on time banked here. The towns are the most characterful on any road out of Bangalore. Ramanagara and its granite Sholay hills; Channapatna, where the lacquered toy lathes have turned for two centuries and where a twenty-minute stop is the most requested addition on family bookings; Maddur and its vada; Mandya and the sugarcane country the Cauvery canals created; and Srirangapatna on its island. Mysore is where most groups take breakfast, and it is the last major city before the forest - the choice of food thins considerably beyond it.

Gundlupet
Flower Town of Karnataka
South of Mysore the road narrows from expressway to good two-lane highway. Nanjangud, twenty-five kilometres out on the Kapila river, holds the very large Srikanteshwara temple and is called the Kashi of the South for the parallel with Varanasi - a forty-five minute stop for travellers with an interest. Gundlupet is the last Karnataka town of any size and genuinely worth slowing for. The fields around it are given over to marigold and sunflower cultivation, and in season the roadside turns solid gold and orange for kilometres. Practically it is the last proper fuel and food stop before Bandipur and the Tamil Nadu border, and our drivers treat it as the checkpoint where the day either is or is not on schedule for the gate.

Theppakadu
Mudumalai Gateway
The highway enters Bandipur National Park and runs nearly twenty kilometres through protected forest, part of the wider Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. Speed limits are enforced, stopping is not permitted, and elephant, gaur and spotted deer are seen from the road regularly - the sightings are often better than people expect. This stretch closes to all vehicles from 9:00 PM to 6:00 AM, and to two-wheelers from 6:00 PM. The Tamil Nadu border comes shortly after and the road enters Mudumalai. At Theppakadu, where the elephant camp sits on the Moyar river, the two ghat routes diverge - left for Masinagudi and the Kalhatti bends, straight on for Gudalur and Pykara. Our drivers will have decided before setting out which they are taking, based on the vehicle, the group and the light remaining.

Ooty
Gentle Road to the Nilgiris
The Gudalur ascent is the longer of the two climbs and the one buses take - a sustained but manageable gradient through forest that gives way to tea as the altitude increases. The temperature drops steadily and the vegetation changes visibly over the space of half an hour, from sal and teak to eucalyptus, wattle and finally the terraced tea that defines the plateau. Near the top the road passes Pykara, where the falls and the lake sit a short distance off the highway - the lake has boating and the falls are at their best from July through December. It is a worthwhile twenty-minute stop and it is on the road rather than off it. Beyond Pykara the plateau opens out and Ooty follows, busy and built-up in a way that surprises first-time visitors expecting a quiet hill station.

Coonoor
Tea Town of the Nilgiris
The last twenty kilometres run southeast and downhill from Ooty, dropping around four hundred metres, with the Nilgiri Mountain Railway running alongside the road for much of the way - if the timing is right you will pass the train, which most passengers find is the highlight of the drive. Wellington comes first, a cantonment town holding the Madras Regimental Centre and the Defence Services Staff College, with the ordered character that cantonments have everywhere. Coonoor follows, lower and warmer than Ooty and noticeably less crowded, laid out on slopes with tea estates running right to the edge of the town. Our driver takes you to the confirmed address and assists with luggage. Note that many estate bungalows and homestays around Coonoor sit on narrow, steep, unsurfaced approach lanes, so send us the property name at booking and we will confirm what can reach the door. A 5:30 AM departure with a proper Mysore halt puts most groups in Coonoor between 1:00 PM and 2:30 PM.

Bus Packages for the Coonoor Route
Four package shapes cover almost every enquiry, all quoted in writing and billed garage to garage on actual kilometres and hours. All assume a minimum two-night trip.
Corporate Package
The most common booking here. Coonoor is close enough for a long-weekend offsite and quiet enough that a team gets time together rather than queuing. Executive AC 27 or 30 seater with recliner seats, USB charging and an LED screen, from your office gate in Electronic City, Whitefield or the ORR corridor. That size is also the most comfortable on the Gudalur climb. Corporate bus hire Bangalore accounts on 30-day credit get monthly consolidated billing.
Family and Community Package
For extended families and apartment associations taking a hill holiday. A 32 seater standard AC coach with a full luggage bay, and a driver briefed for the pace a mixed-age group needs across an eight-hour day with a forest section and a ghat climb in it.
Budget and Institutional Package
The lowest cost per head, for schools and colleges. Coonoor is a rich field trip: a tiger reserve on the way in, a UNESCO-listed mountain railway, working tea factories and a botanical collection in one itinerary. For school excursion bus rental Bangalore and college trip bus rental bangalore we supply driver verification and inspection records as standard, and handle the entry paperwork.
Luxury Package
An executive or Volvo coach with air suspension, dual-zone climate control, premium recliners and per-seat charging, for client offsites and senior leadership travel. On an eight-hour day ending with a ghat climb, the suspension earns its premium. We normally recommend the smaller premium vehicles rather than a 45 seater Volvo, since hill roads reward manoeuvrability.

What Our Customers Say About Our Bus Services in Bangalore
Why Choose Tejas Tours and Travels?
Frequently Asked Questions — Bangalore to Coonoor Bus
No scheduled service runs the whole way. Public options involve a change, usually at Mysuru or Ooty. Private hire is the only way a group travels door to door in one vehicle, and on a route with forest timings and entry paperwork it is also the only way somebody else handles the rules.
Eight to nine hours for about 300 km on the Gudalur route, including the forest stretch and the ghat climb. The distance is modest but the road is not fast. A 5:00 AM departure is what makes the day work.
The district operates an entry pass system with checkpost verification, and the requirements have been revised more than once, including for tourist coaches. We check what applies to your vehicle and dates and complete the paperwork. Green tax and entry charges are collected at the checkpost and billed at actuals.
No. Buses are not permitted on the Kalhatti ghat above Masinagudi. Coaches take the Gudalur route, which adds roughly thirty kilometres and forty-five minutes on a far gentler gradient.
Bus fares around Rs 22,740. The final figure depends on vehicle class, number of days and total kilometres run. Since billing is garage to garage on actual kilometres and hours, we issue a written itemised quote within 2 hours rather than a verbal estimate.
For a group, Coonoor. Hotels cost less and have more availability, the town is small enough to keep a party together, and the peak-season controls that hold coaches outside Ooty town apply far less. Ooty is nineteen kilometres away as a half-day trip, which is usually the right amount of Ooty.
We would not recommend it. Eight to nine hours each way means a single night gives barely a day on the hill. Two nights is the practical minimum, three if the mountain railway and a tea estate visit are on the list.
Included: base fare, all fuel and the driver allowance. Billed separately: tolls and parking at actuals, inter-state tax for Tamil Nadu, Nilgiris entry charges at actuals, extra driver bata past 9:45 PM, night halt charges, and GST. Final rental is on total kilometres and hours, garage to garage.
Twenty percent of the total fare, paid digitally by UPI, bank transfer or card link. The receipt arrives within 30 minutes with driver and vehicle details. The balance is settled at trip end.
No. Tejas Tours and Travels does not cover passengers under a company insurance policy. Vehicles carry statutory motor cover and drivers on this route are licensed, police-verified and experienced on the Bandipur and Gudalur run, but groups wanting personal cover should arrange it independently.
