Places to Visit in Halebidu

Hoysaleswara and Shantaleswara Temples

Hoysaleswara and Shantaleswara Temples

The Hoysaleswara Temple and the adjacent Shantaleswara Temple are the centrepiece of Halebidu and together constitute the most ambitious and elaborate surviving architectural statement of the Hoysala dynasty. Construction on the Hoysaleswara Temple began in 1121 CE and was undertaken over decades by teams of sculptors working in the soft local chloritic schist soapstone, which allows for the extraordinary level of carving detail that covers every horizontal surface of the exterior walls in uninterrupted narrative and decorative bands. The Shantaleswara Temple, named for the queen Shantala, one of the consorts of King Vishnuvardhana and a renowned dancer, stands immediately adjacent and is its near-mirror image, creating a twin complex of unusual grandeur. Both temples were left without their tower superstructures when the Malik Kafur invasions halted construction, and this unfinished quality means that the attention of any visitor falls almost entirely on the sculptural programme rather than being divided between architecture and sculpture as at other temple sites. The Archaeological Survey of India maintains the complex and an on-site museum houses sculptures recovered from the site. Entry to the complex is free for Indian citizens. All travellers on a Bangalore to Halebidu taxi booking plan the bulk of their visit around this complex.

Halebidu Archaeological Museum

Halebidu Archaeological Museum

The Archaeological Survey of India museum within the Hoysaleswara temple complex at Halebidu houses a collection of sculptures, inscriptions and architectural fragments recovered from the site and the surrounding area that significantly deepens the understanding of the Hoysala period and its material culture. The museum displays pieces from different phases of the Hoysala sculptural tradition, including early transitional work that predates the classic style of the twelfth century, and the collection provides context for the different periods of construction, damage, repair and modification that the temple complex underwent between the twelfth and the sixteenth centuries. Inscriptions recovered from the site in Sanskrit and Kannada are also displayed, and these have been important primary sources for historians studying the political and religious history of the Hoysala kingdom. The museum is housed in a building adjacent to the main temple complex and the entry is included with the site ticket. For school and college groups visiting on an educational Belur Halebidu cab from Bangalore tour, the museum typically takes an additional 30 to 40 minutes beyond the temple walk and is strongly recommended.

Chennakeshava Temple, Belur

Chennakeshava Temple, Belur

The Chennakeshava Temple at Belur, 17 kilometres from Halebidu, is the natural partner destination on any Halebidu tour package from Bangalore and is universally combined with the Hoysaleswara Temple on the same day's heritage circuit. Commissioned in 1117 CE by King Vishnuvardhana and completed 103 years later, the Chennakeshava Temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu in his beautiful form and is notable for having been completed with its full superstructure, unlike the Halebidu temples. The interior features 48 pillars, each carved differently, and the famous 42 Madanika bracket figures, celestial maidens in poses of beauty and grace, are among the most celebrated pieces of Indian medieval sculpture. The most discussed is the Darpana Sundari or woman with the mirror, whose hollow and movable jewellery is a subject of enduring fascination. In 2023 the Belur temple was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Sacred Ensembles of the Hoysalas, the same designation that covers Halebidu. The 17-kilometre drive between the two towns takes approximately 30 minutes on a good road through the Hassan district countryside.

Kedareshwara Temple, Halebidu

Kedareshwara Temple, Halebidu

The Kedareshwara Temple, located approximately 500 metres from the main Hoysaleswara-Shantaleswara complex within Halebidu town, is a smaller but beautifully detailed Hoysala temple from the thirteenth century dedicated to Lord Shiva in his form as Kedara. The temple is built on a star-shaped platform in the characteristic Hoysala plan and the exterior carvings, while less extensive than those on the twin temples, are of comparable quality and in places more accessible to close study because the smaller scale of the building brings the carved bands closer to eye level. The temple is considerably less visited than the main complex and offers the kind of unhurried and contemplative exploration that is difficult at the more famous site during peak tourist season. Architecture and sculpture enthusiasts visiting on a one way cab Bangalore to Halebidu often specifically mention the Kedareshwara Temple as a rewarding discovery that they were glad to have included in the itinerary. The temple is maintained by the ASI and is in generally good condition.

Jain Basadis, Halebidu

Jain Basadis, Halebidu

Halebidu contains two significant Jain temples, or basadis, from the Hoysala period that reflect the religious pluralism of the dynasty, which patronised Shaiva, Vaishnava and Jain traditions simultaneously. The Parsvanatha Basadi and the Adinatha Basadi are both built in the Hoysala style with the same soapstone construction and carved details as the Hindu temples, but their iconographic programme reflects Jain rather than Hindu mythology, with depictions of the Jain tirthankaras and their associated symbols and narratives. The basadis are compact and in reasonable condition, and they are typically included on the walking itinerary around the Halebidu complex without requiring a separate journey. For travellers interested in the full range of Hoysala patronage and the multicultural character of the medieval Karnataka polity, the Jain basadis are a valuable addition to the understanding of Halebidu that the Hindu temples alone cannot provide. School and college groups on a Bangalore to Halebidu cab educational tour in particular benefit from seeing the Hindu and Jain temples side by side as evidence of a politically sophisticated and religiously tolerant court culture.

Yagachi Dam and Water Adventure Park

Yagachi Dam and Water Adventure Park

Yagachi Dam, built across the Yagachi River approximately 20 kilometres from Halebidu near Belur, is the most popular recreational complement to the heritage circuit in the Hassan district and draws large numbers of families and groups who want to balance the concentrated intellectual experience of the Hoysala temples with something more physically active and outdoors-oriented. The dam is 1,280 metres long, 26 metres high and sits at 965 feet above sea level, with the reservoir behind it creating a scenic landscape of blue water framed by the gentle hills of the Western Ghats foothills. The KSTDC adventure centre on the dam offers kayaking, jet skiing, speed boating, banana boat rides and coracle rides, making it a genuinely varied activity site for different ages and energy levels. Sunset at the dam, with the water turning amber and the forested hills on the far bank in silhouette, is consistently described as one of the most peaceful experiences on the entire Hoysala circuit. Families and groups booking a Bangalore to Halebidu car rental with an overnight stay in Hassan typically plan the temples in the morning and the dam in the afternoon.

Shettihalli Rosary Church

Shettihalli Rosary Church

The Shettihalli Rosary Church is a partially submerged French Gothic church built in the 1860s by French missionaries and abandoned when the Hemavathi reservoir was filled in the 1960s, creating one of the most visually striking and photographically compelling heritage sites in all of Karnataka. The arched stone structure, roofless and covered in lichen and monsoon moss, sits at the edge of the reservoir with the waterline cutting through its walls at different heights depending on the season, and the combination of the Gothic architecture, the surrounding water and the forested hills gives the site an atmospheric quality that is quite unlike any other heritage stop in Karnataka. Between November and June when the reservoir is lower, more of the church is visible and visitors can walk inside the nave on the exposed ground. Travellers on a Bangalore to Halebidu taxi booking who are staying overnight in Hassan frequently include Shettihalli on a morning drive on the second day, typically before returning toward Bangalore via Channarayapatna and Shravanabelagola.

Gomateshwara Statue, Shravanabelagola

Gomateshwara Statue, Shravanabelagola

Shravanabelagola is located approximately 75 kilometres from Halebidu and directly on the NH 75 route that connects Bangalore to Hassan, making it the most natural first stop on a full-day Hoysala temples trip from Bangalore. The 58-foot monolithic statue of Lord Bahubali, carved from a single granite rock in 983 CE, is the world's tallest monolithic stone sculpture and a major Jain pilgrimage site that draws visitors of all backgrounds for its sheer physical scale and the extraordinary feat of the carving. The 614 rock-cut steps to the hilltop summit take around 20 to 30 minutes to climb and the view from the top, with the statue in the foreground and the plains of the Hassan district extending in every direction, is one of the finest panoramas available from any heritage site in South India. The Mahamastakabhisheka festival held every twelve years is one of the largest religious gatherings in Karnataka. Stopping at Shravanabelagola for approximately two hours on the way from Bangalore to Halebidu adds the most culturally diverse dimension to the day without significant detour.

Bangalore to Halebidu Bus Packages

Every quote is built around group size, trip duration and vehicle tier. The four structures below cover the majority of belur halebidu tour package from bangalore enquiries we receive.

School and College Excursion Package

The most common booking on this route, because Hoysala architecture sits in the Karnataka syllabus and the whole circuit fits inside one school day. Includes seat-belt-equipped vehicles, police-verified drivers, live GPS tracking shared with the institution office, a female attendant on request, and an itinerary that puts the ASI museum on a non-Friday. We can arrange guides at Halebidu and Belur. See our student transportation management page for the full school excursion bus rental bangalore and college trip bus rental bangalore protocol, including consent and headcount procedures.

Heritage and Family Package

For heritage societies, extended families and photography groups of 13 to 45 people. Built around a slower Halebidu morning covering all five sites in the cluster rather than the main temple alone, with Belur in the afternoon. Because the coach drops and collects at each point, older travellers are not forced to walk the full three kilometres between sites. Groups under thirteen should compare a tempo traveller or a mini bus option, which usually works out cheaper and can use the direct Belur back road.

Corporate Package

Built for offsites, team outings and client heritage days, frequently extended into Chikmagalur for a two-day format with a Hassan or estate overnight. Executive coaches with pushback seating, onboard PA so a guide can address the whole group, curtains and charging points. Includes GST-compliant invoicing, Proforma Invoice for PO-based approval, 30-day credit terms for registered accounts and a single point of contact. Companies running regular movement should review our corporate travels and employee transport service contracts for corporate bus rental bangalore on a monthly basis.

Luxury Package

Air-suspension Volvo and BharatBenz multi-axle coaches with recliner seating and onboard entertainment. The argument for this tier on a Halebidu circuit is not the road, which is good throughout, but the day shape: fourteen to sixteen hours door to door with several hours of walking on uneven stone in the middle. Groups that arrive at the temple already tired see less of it. Explore the full volvo bus rental bangalore fleet, and our wedding car rental range for combined car and coach movements.

Our Services Across Bangalore and Mysore

Tejas Tours and Travels runs a full ground-transport fleet from both Bangalore and Mysore, which means a group can be picked up from either city and a vehicle can be substituted from either base if needed. All services listed below are available on both local and outstation terms.

Explore car rental bangalore options covering luxury car rental bangalore and premium cab classes, or the innova hycross rent bangalore fleet, a 6 and 7 seater innova hycross rental Bangalore option that takes the Hulikere approach lane without difficulty.

Includes

•      Base fare and fuel charges

•      Driver allowance

Excludes

•      Toll and parking charges

•      Inter-state tax and permit charges

•      Driver bata extra after 9:45 PM

•      GST

Route note: The Halebidu, Belur and Shravanabelagola circuit is entirely within Karnataka, so no inter-state tax or permit charge applies. How to Book a Bus for Rent in Bangalore — Step by Step

Booking a bus for hire in Bangalore with Tejas Travels takes under 5 minutes. Follow these 4 steps.

Step 1 — Contact Tejas Travels

•      Call or WhatsApp +91 9980277773, or email info@tejastravels.com. Available 24 hours, 7 days a week.

•      Share your travel date and Bangalore pickup location — area, school, college, tech park or hotel name such as Jayanagar, Malleshwaram, Electronic City, Whitefield or MG Road.

•      Share your destination or full day-wise itinerary, total group size, and preferred bus tier: Standard, Executive, Luxury, Volvo or BharatBenz.

•      Confirm whether the ASI museum and Shravanabelagola are on the plan, so we can avoid a Friday date and sequence the day correctly.

•      For school and college excursions, share the institution name, staff-in-charge contact and headcount so tracking access and an attendant can be arranged.

•      For monthly employee commute contract hire, share the route and schedule details.

Step 2 — Receive Your Written Quote

•      Within 2 hours of your enquiry, Tejas Travels sends a written quote via WhatsApp or email.

•      The quote itemizes every charge: bus hire rate in rupees per km or as a flat package for the full circuit.

•      Driver allowance is stated separately, from Rs 700 to Rs 1,250 per day depending on the vehicle.

•      Applicable toll estimates and site parking charges are included.

•      Driver bata beyond 9:45 PM is shown upfront, since a same-day Hoysala circuit normally returns later than that.

•      Interstate permit costs do not apply on this circuit, but are listed for itineraries extending beyond Karnataka.

•      No verbal-only pricing. Everything is in writing before you commit.

•      For schools, colleges and corporate clients, a Proforma Invoice can be issued at this stage for approval or PO processing.

•      Request comparison quotes for Standard versus Executive bus hire at the same time.

Step 3 — Confirm Your Booking and Pay Advance

•      Review the written quote and confirm via WhatsApp or phone.

•      A 20 percent advance payment confirms the booking and guarantees the specific bus on your date.

•      For the October to February school excursion season and for long weekends, book well ahead and pay the advance early.

•      For large corporate and institutional bookings above Rs 50,000, a higher advance may be required.

•      Payment options: UPI including Google Pay, PhonePe and Paytm; NEFT, IMPS or RTGS bank transfer; or credit and debit card via payment link.

•      Advance receipt is issued within 30 minutes.

•      Confirmation includes driver name and mobile, vehicle registration, departure time, pickup confirmation and full billing breakdown — all in writing.

Step 4 — Your Driver and Bus Arrive Early

•      Your assigned Tejas Travels driver arrives at the Bangalore pickup point 15 minutes before scheduled departure, which for this circuit usually means around 5:15 AM.

•      For large school and college groups, the driver coordinates the exact gate and boarding order with the staff-in-charge.

•      The bus is clean, sanitized, fuelled and GPS-active.

•      The driver calls you 30 minutes before arrival.

•      During the trip, the driver handles all NH exits, toll payments, site parking and rest stop coordination, and takes the Hassan bypass and Hagare junction approach rather than routing a full-size coach through town.

•      At trip end, the balance is settled after deducting the advance.

•      Any additional kilometres or hours are billed at the pre-agreed rate.

Quick bus hire booking: WhatsApp +91 9980277773 with your group size, Bangalore pickup location, destination and travel date. Written bus hire quote in 2 hours.

Halebidu temple timings for the Hoysaleswara temple run from about 6:30 AM to 7:00 PM daily. The ASI archaeological museum in front of the temple opens roughly 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM with a nominal entry fee, and it is closed on Fridays. That Friday closure catches out a lot of groups, so confirm your travel day before booking. Timings can shift seasonally, so verify locally before travel.

We recommend Halebidu first. It is a cluster of five sites rather than a single temple, it is consistently less crowded, and morning light suits the friezes. Reaching Halebidu by around 10:00 AM gives you time to cover the basadis, Kedareshwara and Hulikere rather than skipping them. Belur then works well from 3:00 PM, and the return leg fits Shravanabelagola inside its afternoon window of roughly 3:30 PM to 6:30 PM.

Ninety minutes covers the Hoysaleswara temple alone. Two and a half hours covers the full cluster: the main temple, the ASI museum, Basadi Halli, the Kedareshwara temple and the Hulikere stepwell. School and college groups studying Hoysala architecture should plan the longer version, because the partly ruined Kedareshwara makes the construction far easier to explain than the intact temple does.

20 percent of the total fare is payable in advance to confirm the booking and guarantee the specific vehicle on your date. The advance is payable by UPI, NEFT, IMPS, RTGS or card via payment link, and a receipt is issued within 30 minutes. For institutional bookings above Rs 50,000 and for peak excursion dates, a higher advance may be requested.

The fare includes base fare, fuel charges and driver allowance. It excludes toll and parking, inter-state tax, driver bata after 9:45 PM, and GST. No inter-state tax applies on this circuit as it is entirely within Karnataka, but a same-day circuit normally returns after 9:45 PM so driver bata will apply. The final rental is calculated on total kilometres and hours from our garage to garage, and everything is itemized in the written quote.

Tejas Tours and Travels does not cover passenger insurance by company. Our vehicles carry all statutory commercial vehicle insurance and valid permits, but passengers are advised to arrange their own travel insurance cover. Schools and colleges should confirm their own group cover before travel.

Yes, provided the driver takes the Hassan bypass and the Hagare junction approach rather than routing through town. The one road to avoid with a large coach is the direct seventeen-kilometre back road between Halebidu and Belur, which is poor in stretches. We route full-size vehicles via the Hassan road instead. The narrow approach lane at Hulikere is also better suited to a mini coach, so we park on the main road and walk the last stretch.

Yes, subject to notice period. Cancellation more than 7 days before departure carries no charge and the full advance is refunded within 5 to 7 working days. Charges then step up: 10 percent at 4 to 7 days, 25 percent at 48 hours to 4 days, 50 percent at 24 to 48 hours, and 75 percent under 24 hours. If Tejas Travels cancels for operational reasons, you receive a full refund within 2 working days or an alternate bus.

Halebidu has only a few small lodges, so overnight groups stay at Hassan, 32 kilometres away, or at Chikmagalur, 34 kilometres on, which also opens up Mullayanagiri and the coffee estates for a second day. October to February gives the most comfortable weather and is also peak school excursion season, so weekday coaches are booked out well in advance. Allow four to six weeks for institutional trips and long weekends.
