On the forest trail from Sampekatte, Hidlumane Falls drops in several tiers over dark rock. The walk to the falls involves stream crossings and slippery stones, so good shoes matter. It is most dramatic after the monsoon, and trek routes that pass the falls are booked through the forest department.
Kollur Mookambika Temple
About 21 kilometres from Kodachadri by road, Kollur is one of the most important Shakti temples in South India, dedicated to the goddess Mookambika on the banks of the Souparnika river. Pilgrims from Karnataka and Kerala visit throughout the year, especially during Navaratri. Nagara Fort and Devagange Ponds
Nagara, once called Bidanur, was the capital of the Keladi Nayaka rulers. The ruins of the fort, with its moat, walls and palace foundations, sit on a hill just outside town. A few kilometres away, Devagange is a set of old stepped ponds in the forest, said to have been built for the royal family. Both are quiet stops that most trekkers visit on day two.
Jog Falls
One of the highest plunge waterfalls in India, where the Sharavathi river drops in four streams known as Raja, Rani, Roarer and Rocket. Jog is roughly two hours from Nagara via Sagar and makes a natural add-on for a jog falls kodachadri trip. The flow is strongest from August to November.
Agumbe
Known as the Cherrapunji of the South for its heavy rainfall, Agumbe sits at the top of a hairpin ghat with a famous sunset point looking towards the Arabian Sea. Sakrebyle Elephant Camp
Around 14 kilometres from Shivamogga on the Thirthahalli road, the forest department camp on the Tunga river lets visitors watch trained elephants being bathed and fed in the morning. Timings are limited to the early hours, so it works best on the return drive after an overnight stay in Shivamogga.
Kavaledurga Fort
A hill fort near Thirthahalli built in stages by the Keladi Nayakas, with a winding trail, stone gateways and a small temple at the top. The view across the paddy fields and forest is excellent, and the climb is easier than Kodachadri, which makes it a good option for families with older members.
