Mekedatu
From Sangama, forest department buses cross to mekedatu, about four kilometres downstream, where the Kaveri squeezes through a narrow rock gorge. The name means goat's leap, from the legend of a goat that jumped across the gap to escape a tiger. The potholes carved into the rock by swirling water are remarkable. The area lies within the Kaveri Wildlife Sanctuary, so follow forest rules.
Bheemeshwari
Further along the Kaveri, bheemeshwari is known for its riverside nature camp run by Jungle Lodges and Resorts, with coracle rides, nature trails and birdwatching. It is an excellent overnight option if you want to extend the trip. Book the camp in advance.
Muthathi
Muthathi is a quiet riverside village on the Kaveri with an old Anjaneya temple linked by legend to the Ramayana. The forested banks are good for a picnic, and the drive through the sanctuary area is scenic.
Kabbaladurga
This granite monolith near Kanakapura has a Kabbalamma temple at its base and fort ruins at the top. The climb is steep and short, rewarding trekkers with wide views of the countryside. It is best done early in the morning before the rock heats up.
Thottikallu Falls
Closer to the city off Kanakapura Road, Thottikallu, or TK Falls, is a seasonal waterfall beside a small shrine. It flows best during and after the monsoon and is an easy stop on the drive back.
