Onake Obavvana Kindi
This narrow crevice in the rocks is the most famous spot in the fort. According to the story, when Hyder Ali's soldiers tried to sneak in through the opening, Obavva, the wife of a guard, stood beside it with an onake, a long wooden pestle used for pounding grain, and struck down the intruders one by one. She is celebrated across Karnataka as a symbol of courage, and the spot draws every visitor who comes to the fort.
Temples Inside the Fort
The fort holds several old temples. The Hidimbeshwara Temple, one of the oldest, is linked to the Mahabharata legend of Hidimba and Bhima, and is known for a large tooth said to belong to Hidimba and a huge drum associated with Bhima. The Ekanatheshwari Temple honours the guardian goddess of the Nayaka rulers, and the Sampige Siddeshwara Temple is another important shrine. Together they show how the fort was also a centre of religious life.
Granaries, Oil Pits and Ponds
The fort was designed to survive long sieges. Granaries, huge stone pits for storing oil and ghee, and interconnected ponds that collected rainwater kept the defenders supplied. Walking past these structures gives a clear sense of how carefully the fort was planned. Look out for the rock-cut ponds and the grinding stones scattered across the rocks.
Chandravalli Caves
About 3 kilometres from town, Chandravalli is an archaeological site where excavations have revealed pottery, coins and other remains from ancient times. The Ankali Mutt caves, a series of underground chambers once used for meditation, are an unusual experience. The lake and rocky hills make it a scenic stop, especially in the late afternoon.
Jogimatti Forest and Hill
About 10 kilometres from Chitradurga, Jogimatti is the highest point in the district, with cool breezes, scrub forest, wind turbines and wide views. It is a peaceful place for a short walk and a picnic, and a favourite spot for sunset. The road is narrow in places, so it is best visited in daylight.
Adumalleshwara
Near Jogimatti, Adumalleshwara has a small Shiva temple where water flows from the mouth of a stone Nandi, along with a small zoo and a garden that children enjoy. It is an easy, relaxed addition to a Jogimatti visit.
Murugha Mutt
On the outskirts of Chitradurga, the Sri Murugha Mutt is a well-known religious and educational institution of the Lingayat tradition. The peaceful campus is a common stop for visitors, and the mutt has long played a role in the town's cultural and educational life.
Vani Vilas Sagar
About 40 kilometres from Chitradurga near Hiriyur, Vani Vilas Sagar, also called Mari Kanive, was built across the Vedavathi river in the early 1900s and is one of the oldest dams in Karnataka. The reservoir, framed by hills, is a lovely stop on the return drive, particularly after a good monsoon when the water is high.
