Among the earliest temples in Aihole, Lad Khan has a flat roof, a large pillared hall and stone window screens with delicate lattice work. Ravana Phadi Cave Temple
A rock-cut cave shrine on the edge of the village, Ravana Phadi is dedicated to Shiva and holds powerful carvings of Nataraja, Ardhanarishvara, Ganga and Yamuna. The climb is short and the view over the village, its temples and the Malaprabha plain is the best in Aihole, especially at sunset.
Hucchimalli Gudi and Galaganatha Group
Hucchimalli Gudi is an early temple with a northern-style tower and a well-preserved porch, often discussed by historians for its transitional design. The Galaganatha group, near the river, is a cluster of smaller shrines built in different styles over several decades. Together they show the experimentation that earned Aihole its reputation, and they are far quieter than the main complex.
ASI Archaeological Museum, Aihole
Next to the Durga Temple complex, the Archaeological Survey of India sculpture gallery displays carvings, inscriptions and architectural fragments collected from across Aihole. Pattadakal Group of Monuments
Thirteen kilometres from Aihole, Pattadakal is a UNESCO World Heritage Site where Chalukya kings were crowned. Badami Cave Temples and Agastya Lake

Four rock-cut cave temples, cut into red sandstone cliffs, overlook Agastya Lake, with the Bhutanatha temples on the far shore. Hiriyur
Home of Vani Vilas Sagar
Hiriyur sits on the Vedavathi river and is the "Home of Vani Vilas Sagar", also called Mari Kanive, completed in the early 1900s and one of the oldest dams in Karnataka. The dam lies about 20 kilometres off the highway and makes a good detour on the return journey. Hiriyur also has the Teru Malleshwara Temple, known for its tall lamp pillar. The highway restaurants here are popular breakfast stops if you left Bangalore very early.
Chitradurga
Fort City of Karnataka
Chitradurga is the "Fort City of Karnataka", famous for the Kallina Kote, or Stone Fort, a vast hill fortress with seven concentric walls built largely by the Nayakas of Chitradurga. It is linked to the legend of Onake Obavva, who defended the fort with a pestle. If time allows, a two-hour visit is worth it, although most Aihole travellers save it for the return. From here the route turns north onto NH50.
Hosapete
Gateway to Hampi
Hosapete, also called Hospet, is the "Gateway to Hampi", just 13 kilometres from the UNESCO-listed ruins of Vijayanagara. The town is also known for the Tungabhadra Dam, whose gardens and illuminated evening view draw visitors from across the state. Hosapete is the natural lunch halt, with a good range of restaurants. Travellers who want to combine Hampi with Aihole often stay a night here on the way up or on the way back.
Kushtagi
Pomegranate Belt of North Karnataka
