Bekal Fort
The reason most people make this trip. Built around 1650 by Shivappa Nayaka of the Keladi dynasty, bekal fort spreads across roughly 40 acres and is the largest fort in Kerala. Its keyhole-shaped laterite walls rise straight out of the sea on three sides, and the observation tower at the centre gives a view along the entire curve of the coast. A Hanuman temple stands at the entrance and an old mosque from the Tipu Sultan period lies close by. Arrive around 4:00 PM, walk the ramparts as the light softens and stay for sunset over the western bastions.

Departure Point
Your journey to Ooty begins from Bangalore, the gateway to South India's most beloved hill stations. Pick-up is available from any part of the city — Koramangala, Electronic City, Whitefield, Hebbal, Yeshwanthpur, Marathahalli, or Majestic. The most common route out of Bangalore takes you onto NH275, the six-lane Mysore Expressway, which is one of the smoothest and best-maintained national highways in Karnataka. An early departure between 5 AM and 6 AM is strongly advised to clear Bangalore city limits before peak traffic begins. The first 50 km on the expressway are fast, comfortable, and lightly trafficked in the early hours, setting a pleasant tone for the journey ahead. Our drivers are experienced in choosing the optimal departure window and route based on real-time traffic conditions, ensuring that the first stretch of your Bangalore to Ooty road trip is efficient, calm, and enjoyable from the very first kilometre.

Toy Town of Karnataka
The day starts on the Bangalore–Mysore Expressway, and leaving at 5:00 AM means you are past Kengeri before the city wakes up. The first landmark is Channapatna, the Toy Town of Karnataka. For generations its artisans have turned soft ivory wood into lacquered toys coloured with vegetable dyes, a craft traditionally traced to the time of Tipu Sultan and now protected with a GI tag. The expressway bypasses the town, but the service road exit takes only a few minutes, and a set of Channapatna toys makes a far better souvenir than anything sold at a highway plaza. Elapsed time: about one hour.

Sugar City of Karnataka
Twenty minutes on, Maddur is the home of the Maddur Vada, the crisp onion-and-semolina fritter that almost every traveller on this road stops for. A breakfast halt here is practically a tradition. Mandya, a little further, is the Sugar City of Karnataka, ringed by sugarcane fields watered by the Cauvery canals from the Krishna Raja Sagara reservoir. Watch for the small jaggery units along the service roads. Elapsed time: about one hour forty minutes.

Island Fortress of Tipu Sultan
Srirangapatna, the Island Fortress of Tipu Sultan, sits on an island in the Cauvery and served as the capital of Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan until the siege of 1799. The Ranganathaswamy Temple and Daria Daulat Bagh are minutes from the highway. On a direct Bekal run most travellers do not stop long, but just after the island your driver takes the bypass towards Hunsur, which avoids Mysore city traffic and saves close to an hour. Elapsed time: about two hours.

Gateway to Coorg
Bylakuppe, the Mini Tibet of South India, is one of the largest Tibetan settlements outside Tibet, founded in the early 1960s. The Namdroling Monastery, better known as the Golden Temple, houses three gilded statues close to 18 metres tall, making it one of the most memorable stops of the drive. Just beyond, Kushalnagar is the Gateway to Coorg, with Nisargadhama and Dubare a short detour away. A 45-minute halt at the Golden Temple fits easily into the day. Elapsed time: about three hours forty-five minutes.

Scotland of India
Climbing through coffee and pepper estates shaded by silver oak, the road reaches Madikeri, the hill town at the heart of Coorg, often called the Scotland of India for its mist and rolling slopes. Raja's Seat, the garden viewpoint where the Kodava kings watched the sun set over the valleys, sits right in town, and Madikeri Fort with its old palace is a few minutes away. This is the natural lunch halt, and the Kodava pandi curry with akki roti in local restaurants is worth the stop. Elapsed time: about five hours.

Largest Fort in Kerala
Near Sullia the route leaves NH275 and crosses into Kerala, entering Kasaragod district, the Land of Seven Languages, where Malayalam, Kannada, Tulu, Konkani, Beary, Marathi and Urdu are all spoken. Interstate tax is settled at the border and your driver handles the paperwork. The road winds through rubber estates, cashew groves and villages of red-tiled houses. Near Chattanchal the route joins NH66, the coastal highway, and the final stretch south brings Bekal into view, its fort walls dark against the sea. Elapsed time: eight to nine hours with halts.

The bangalore to bekal distance is approximately 370 to 390 kilometres via Mysore, Kushalnagar, Madikeri and Sullia. A bus takes 9 to 10 hours including breakfast and lunch halts and the ghat sections. The alternate route via Hassan, Shiradi Ghat and Mangalore is about 430 to 440 kilometres.
Pricing starts from around Rs 45 per kilometre for a 29 seater bus and varies with seating capacity, AC or non-AC configuration, and whether you choose a standard, Volvo or BharatBenz coach. The quoted fare includes base fare, fuel charges and driver allowance. Toll, parking, Kerala interstate tax, driver bata after 9:45 PM and GST are extra, and the final rental is calculated garage to garage on total kilometres and hours. You receive an itemised written quote within 2 hours.
A 20 percent advance of the total fare confirms your booking and guarantees the specific bus on your date. It must be paid digitally by UPI, bank transfer or card, and a receipt is issued within 30 minutes. For large corporate bookings above Rs 50,000, a higher advance may be required.
Yes. The route crosses from Karnataka into Kerala near Jalsoor on the primary route, or at Talapady on the coastal route via Mangalore, so Kerala interstate tax applies. It is billed separately at actuals and shown in your written quote.
The route via Mysore and Madikeri is shorter and far more scenic, with good group stops at Bylakuppe and Coorg. The route via Hassan, Shiradi Ghat and Mangalore is longer but runs on wider highways for most of the way. During the monsoon, either ghat may face restrictions or closures, so we check current conditions and recommend the best route when you book.
Bekal Fort is a protected monument open during daytime hours with an entry ticket. As bekal fort timings and fees are set by the authorities and can change, please confirm them before your visit. We recommend visiting in the morning or late afternoon, when the light is softer and the sea breeze is pleasant.
Three days is comfortable: one for the drive via Coorg, one for Bekal Fort, the beaches and Ananthapura, and one for the return. Four days let you add Valiyaparamba backwaters, a night in Coorg or a detour to Kukke Subramanya. The same bus and driver stay with you throughout, with driver night halt charges included in the written quote.
Yes. There is parking for tourist vehicles near the fort entrance and the beach park, and the driver sets down the group close to the entrance before parking. During the beach festival and on holidays the area can be busy, so arriving early is recommended.
No. Tejas Tours and Travels does not operate sleeper bus services; all our buses are seated configuration with push-back seats. We also do not provide passenger insurance cover, so passengers are advised to arrange their own travel insurance if required. All buses carry valid vehicle insurance and full statutory compliance.
Cancelling more than 7 days before departure carries no charge, with the full advance refunded within 5 to 7 working days. Between 4 and 7 days the charge is 10 percent of the total fare, between 48 hours and 4 days 25 percent, between 24 and 48 hours 50 percent, and under 24 hours 75 percent. Multi-day outstation hire needs a minimum 7-day notice for a full refund.
