Mullayanagiri Peak
At about 1,930 metres, mullayanagiri is the highest peak in Karnataka. Cars can go up to the parking area, and a flight of steps leads to a small Shiva temple at the top, with a cave and Nandi statue nearby. On clear mornings the view across rolling shola grasslands is spectacular. The same vehicle pass covers this road, so plan both peaks together.
Seethalayanagiri
On the way up to Mullayanagiri, the Seethalayanagiri Mallikarjuna temple sits on a ridge surrounded by green slopes. It is a calm stop with fine views, and is often less crowded than the main peak.
Manikyadhara Falls
A short drive beyond the shrine, manikyadhara falls trickles over the rock in fine streams that pilgrims consider sacred. Many visitors bathe here before visiting the shrine. A flight of steps leads down to the falls, and the spot is at its best just after the monsoon.
Gaalikere
Gaalikere, meaning windy lake, is a small pond set in open grassland on the ridge. The walk to it is short and the setting is quiet and scenic, with cool winds and mist that can roll in suddenly. It is popular with photographers and trekkers on the baba budangiri trek routes.
Jhari Falls
Also called Buttermilk Falls for its milky white water, Jhari Falls lies inside a coffee estate below the range. The last stretch is usually covered by local jeeps, as the track is rough. The natural pool at the base makes it a family favourite.
Kemmangundi, Z Point and Hebbe Falls
Around 30 kilometres from Baba Budangiri, Kemmangundi is a hill station once used as the summer retreat of the Mysore kings, with gardens and a short walk to Z Point for sunset views. Nearby Hebbe Falls drops in two stages through dense forest and is reached by estate jeeps and a short walk. Combine these on the second day of your trip.
Hirekolale Lake
About ten kilometres from Chikmagalur town, Hirekolale Lake is framed by the Mullayanagiri range and is especially beautiful at sunset. It is an easy stop on the way back from the hills.

Channarayapatna is the gateway to Shravanabelagola, just 12 kilometres away, with its famous Gommateshwara statue. Highway restaurants here and on the Hassan bypass make this the natural breakfast halt. Hassan is often called the Poor Man's Ooty for its pleasant climate, and is home to the Hasanamba Temple, which opens only for a few days each year around Deepavali. Dakshina Varanasi, the Hoysala Temple Town
The road narrows and turns greener as you approach the Malnad region. Belur, called Dakshina Varanasi, is the home of the twelfth-century Chennakeshava Temple, part of the Hoysala temples inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The carvings, including the famous Darpana Sundari, reward even a short stop. The Yagachi dam lies just outside town. Elapsed time: about four hours thirty minutes.
Birthplace of Coffee in India
About eight kilometres out of town, the road turns left at Kaimara and begins to climb through coffee and shola forest. A fork ahead leads left to Mullayanagiri and Seethalayanagiri and right towards the Datta Peetha shrine and Manikyadhara Falls. The bangalore to baba budangiri distance is about 285 kilometres via NH75, Hassan, Belur and Chikkamagaluru. By bus it takes 6 hours 30 minutes to 7 hours 30 minutes to reach Chikkamagaluru, and the hill section takes another hour or so.
The hill road beyond Kaimara is narrow and regulated by the district administration. Large coaches are usually based in Chikkamagaluru, with the ghat section covered in smaller vehicles or local jeeps as the rules allow. We confirm the current arrangement when you book.
Yes. The district introduced online vehicle pre-booking for the range in 2025. Bookings can be suspended during red alerts, bad weather or religious events, so the hill day should be planned with some flexibility.
Rates start from Rs 45 per km for a 29 seater bus, with larger, executive, Volvo and BharatBenz coaches priced higher. Outstation bus hire carries a minimum daily kilometre charge, and the final rental is calculated garage to garage. Tolls, parking, driver bata after 9:45 PM and GST are extra, as are any local jeep charges for the hill section.
September to February is ideal, with green hills, cool weather and good views. The monsoon brings heavy rain and frequent access restrictions on the ghat road, and summer can be hazy.
Two days is the minimum: one to travel and settle in Chikkamagaluru, and one for the hill range. Three days lets you add Kemmangundi, Hebbe Falls or Belur and Halebidu.
