Prakasam Barrage
Stretching more than a kilometre across the Krishna, the barrage was completed in 1957, replacing an earlier anicut built by Sir Arthur Cotton in the 1850s, and it feeds the canals that made the delta one of India's richest rice regions. The road across it gives wide river views, and the barrage is lit up in the evenings. It is at its most dramatic when the gates are open after heavy rain upstream.
Bhavani Island
One of the largest river islands on the Krishna, reached by boat from the city. It has been developed as a leisure destination with lawns, boating, water sports and a small resort. It is an easy, relaxed half-day for families, especially in the cooler months, and sunset over the river is lovely from the island's edge.
Undavalli Caves
About six kilometres from the city, the undavalli caves are carved into a sandstone hillside overlooking the river. The main cave rises four storeys and holds a huge monolithic sculpture of Vishnu reclining on the serpent Ananta. The caves date back around 1,500 years and began as Buddhist retreats before being adapted as Hindu shrines. Go in the morning or late afternoon, as the steps get hot at midday.
Mogalrajapuram Caves
Within the city, these smaller rock-cut caves are among the oldest monuments in the region, dating to around the 5th century. Their carvings of Nataraja and Ganesha are weathered but still striking, and they are rarely crowded. A short, quiet stop for anyone interested in early South Indian cave architecture.
Gandhi Hill
A hilltop memorial to Mahatma Gandhi, built in 1968 with a series of stupas, a library and a small planetarium. It was one of the first memorials in the country dedicated to him on this scale. The evening sound and light show and the view over the city make it a pleasant stop, particularly for families with children.
Kondapalli Fort and Kondapalli Toys
About 16 kilometres north-west, the village of Kondapalli is famous for its brightly painted wooden toys, carved from a light local softwood and carrying a GI tag. Artisans still make them by hand in their homes, and buying directly from them is part of the experience. kondapalli toys of village scenes, elephants and dancing figures make memorable gifts. Above the village, the ruins of Kondapalli Fort, dating back to the 14th century, offer fine views across the plains.
Amaravati
About 35 kilometres from the city, on the south bank of the Krishna, ancient Amaravati was a major centre of Buddhism more than 2,000 years ago. The remains of the great stupa, the archaeological museum and a giant seated Dhyana Buddha statue beside the river tell the story. Nearby, the Amareswara Temple is one of the Pancharama Kshetras sacred to Shiva. The drive also passes through the new state capital region.

Leaving Bangalore past Hebbal and the airport road, NH44 runs north through Devanahalli to Chikkaballapur. At Muddenahalli nearby, the great engineer Sir M Visvesvaraya was born in 1861; his birthplace is now a memorial and museum, and his birthday, 15 September, is celebrated across India as Engineers' Day. An early start means the highway is empty and fast.
Summer Capital of the Vijayanagara Empire
Past Bagepalli, the highway crosses into Andhra Pradesh, where the interstate tax is completed. A short detour of about 15 kilometres leads to Lepakshi, whose 16th-century Veerabhadra Temple has one pillar that does not touch the floor, so visitors pass a cloth underneath it. The giant monolithic Nandi at the village entrance is among the largest in India. Back on NH44, Penukonda was a fortified summer capital of the Vijayanagara kings, and its hill fort, gates and old temples still stand. The large Kia car plant near the highway shows how the region has grown.
Groundnut Bowl of Andhra Pradesh
Anantapur district grows more groundnut than almost anywhere in India, and the fields on both sides of the road show it. The district is also home to Puttaparthi, about 40 kilometres off the highway, where the ashram of Sri Sathya Sai Baba draws visitors from around the world. Just before the city, the ISKCON temple built in the shape of a giant chariot drawn by horses is visible from the highway and worth a brief stop. Anantapur is the natural breakfast halt, reached around 8:00 AM.
First Capital of Andhra State
Gooty's hilltop fort, one of the oldest in the region, crowns a rocky hill above the town, and the grave of Sir Thomas Munro, the British governor who died here in 1827, lies nearby. From Gooty, the Belum Caves, among the longest cave systems in the Indian subcontinent, are a worthwhile detour of about 60 kilometres for travellers with time. Kurnool, on the Tungabhadra river, served as the first capital of Andhra State from 1953 to 1956. The Konda Reddy Buruju, a fort tower in the centre, recalls its past. Lunch here around 11:00 AM prepares you for the forest stretch ahead.
Gateway to Srisailam Jyotirlinga
East of Kurnool, the road passes Atmakur and enters the Nallamala hills, part of the Nagarjunasagar-Srisailam Tiger Reserve, the largest tiger reserve in India by area. The road winds through dense dry forest, and while tiger sightings are rare, deer and langurs are common. Leaving the hills, the road descends onto the plains of Palnadu. Vinukonda takes its name from a legend that Rama, searching for Sita, heard news of her here; vinu means to hear and konda means hill. A hill fort and temple still sit above the town. Narasaraopet is the gateway to Kotappakonda, about 12 kilometres away, where the Trikoteswara Swamy Temple stands on a hill with three peaks. During Maha Shivaratri, villages bring enormous decorated towers called prabhalu to the hill, one of the most spectacular festivals in Andhra Pradesh.

Mangalagiri's hill temple of Panakala Narasimha is unusual: devotees offer panakam, a jaggery drink, which the deity is said to accept only half of, however much is poured.
