Jalakandeswarar Temple
Inside the fort, the Jalakandeswarar temple is a gem of Vijayanagara craftsmanship. Its kalyana mandapa is famous for pillars carved with rearing horses, mythical yalis, dancers and warriors, so fine that legend says colonial officials once wanted to ship it to Europe. The temple was restored to worship in the twentieth century after a long period of disuse, and its gopuram rises above the fort walls.
Government Museum
Housed inside the fort, the Government Museum displays sculptures, hero stones, bronzes, coins, arms and artefacts from across the Vellore region, along with exhibits on local history and natural history. It gives useful background for the rest of the fort and takes about an hour.
Tipu Mahal, Hyder Mahal and the 1806 Mutiny
After Tipu Sultan's death in 1799, his family was held in palaces inside the fort, later known as Tipu Mahal and Hyder Mahal. In July 1806, sepoys of the Company's army rose in revolt within these walls, sparked by new dress regulations that offended religious customs. The Vellore Mutiny was quickly crushed, but it is remembered as one of the earliest large-scale uprisings against British rule, and a memorial pillar near the fort marks it. The last king of Kandy, Sri Vikrama Rajasinha, was also exiled and died here.
Sripuram Golden Temple
About eight kilometres south of the town at Thirumalaikodi, the Sri Lakshmi Narayani temple is covered in gold and set at the centre of a star-shaped path through landscaped gardens. It is most striking after dark, when the lamps are lit and the whole temple glows. Mobile phones and cameras are not permitted inside and are deposited at the entrance, and visitors must follow the dress code. Ratnagiri Balamurugan Temple

Amirthi Zoological Park
At the foot of the Jawadhu Hills, about 25 kilometres from Vellore, the Amirthi park has a small zoo, forest trails and a seasonal waterfall that flows best after the monsoon. It is a pleasant break for families with children after a day of temples and history.
Pallikonda Uthara Ranganathar Temple
On the Palar river about 25 kilometres before Vellore, Pallikonda is named after the reclining form of Vishnu, Ranganatha, enshrined in its ancient temple. Devotees consider it one of the important Ranganatha shrines, and a short stop fits easily on the way in or out of Vellore.
