Papanasam Beach
Directly below the cliff, varkala beach, also called Papanasam Beach, is believed to wash away sins, and Hindus perform rites for their ancestors here, especially on Karkidaka Vavu in July or August. Natural springs flow from the cliffs onto the sand. The sea is strong, so swim only between the lifeguard flags. In the evening the beach becomes a relaxed gathering place for travellers and locals.
Janardhana Swamy Temple
Set on a hill above Papanasam, this Vishnu temple is said to be about two thousand years old and gives Varkala its name as Dakshina Kashi, the Varanasi of the South. The temple architecture is classic Kerala, and a large bell is traditionally said to have been presented by the captain of a Dutch ship. Only Hindus are permitted inside, and traditional dress is expected. The Arattu festival in March or April brings processions and cultural events.
Sivagiri Mutt
About three kilometres from the beach, sivagiri mutt was established by the social reformer Sree Narayana Guru, whose message of one caste, one religion and one god for humanity transformed Kerala society. His samadhi is here, and the annual Sivagiri pilgrimage from 30 December to 1 January draws devotees in yellow robes from across the state. The hilltop is peaceful and well worth a visit.
Black Beach and Odayam Beach
At the northern end of the cliff, Black Beach takes its name from the dark mineral-rich sand, and Odayam Beach beyond it is quieter still. These beaches are popular for surfing lessons, and the waves are consistent from October to March. They offer a more secluded alternative to the main beach, especially in the early morning.
Kappil Beach and Edava Backwaters
About eight kilometres north of Varkala, Kappil is where the backwaters of Edava and Nadayara meet the sea on a narrow strip of sand, so you can see the lake on one side and the ocean on the other. Boating on the backwaters, with coconut palms and fishing villages along the banks, is the highlight. It is the ideal place for a slow afternoon away from the cliff crowds.
Anjengo Fort and Lighthouse
About 13 kilometres south at Anchuthengu, this small fort was built by the English East India Company in the late seventeenth century and was one of its earliest settlements on the Malabar coast. The laterite walls, old cemetery and nearby lighthouse, which offers wide views over the coast and backwaters, make a quiet historical detour.
Ponnumthuruthu Island
Also called Golden Island, Ponnumthuruthu sits in the backwaters south of Varkala and is reached by a short boat ride. A Shiva-Parvati temple stands on the island amid coconut groves, and the boat trip through calm water and mangroves is as memorable as the island itself.
