Loam's Viewpoint and the 40 Hairpin Bends
Near the ninth hairpin bend on the climb from Aliyar, Loam's Viewpoint looks down over the Aliyar reservoir and the plains of Pollachi spread out far below. Nilgiri tahr are often seen on the rocks here. It is the first real stop on the ghat and one of the most photographed spots in the Anamalais.
Puthuthottam and the Lion-Tailed Macaque
Just outside Valparai town, the rainforest fragment at Puthuthottam is one of the best places in India to see the endangered lion-tailed macaque, with its silver mane and black coat. The monkeys often move through the trees right beside the road in the morning. Watch quietly, do not feed them, and keep your distance.
Sholayar Dam
About 20 kilometres from Valparai, Sholayar Dam is among the deepest dams in Asia, set in thick forest on the Chalakudy river. The reservoir and the surrounding hills are especially beautiful in the monsoon and just after it, when the water is high and mist rolls over the dam.
Nallamudi Poonjolai Viewpoint
A short walk through a tea estate leads to Nallamudi viewpoint, which looks out over a deep valley toward the Kerala hills and the tribal settlements below. On clear mornings the view stretches to the high ranges near Anamudi. Arrive early, before the mist and clouds move in.
Chinnakallar Falls
About 15 kilometres from Valparai, Chinnakallar receives some of the heaviest rainfall in the country, earning it the name Cherrapunji of Tamil Nadu. The falls are reached through lush forest and are at their most powerful during and after the monsoon.
Balaji Temple, Valparai
Set within a tea estate and surrounded by landscaped gardens, the Balaji Temple is a peaceful spot with fine views over the plantations. The temple complex is well maintained and makes a calm stop on an estate drive.
Aliyar Dam and Monkey Falls
At the foot of the ghat, Aliyar Dam has a park, boating and an aquarium, making it a pleasant break before or after the climb. A few kilometres up the ghat road, Monkey Falls is a natural waterfall where visitors can bathe in the shallow pools, with entry managed by the forest department. Both are easy stops on the way up or down.

The ghat is well maintained and safe when driven carefully, and our drivers are experienced on it. Passengers prone to motion sickness should eat lightly before the climb, sit in the front or middle row, and let the driver know, so that he can take the bends gently and stop at viewpoints along the way.
We do not recommend it. The ghat passes through the Anamalai Tiger Reserve, where elephants and other wildlife cross the road, and forest checkposts may regulate vehicle movement after dark. As timings are set by the forest department, we confirm the current rules before your trip and plan to reach Aliyar by mid-afternoon.
September to May is ideal, with pleasant days and cool evenings. The monsoon from June to August brings very heavy rain and dramatic waterfalls, but landslides and leeches are common. Summer holidays from April to June are popular with families escaping the heat of the plains.
Three days is comfortable: a full day for the drive, a day for the viewpoints, Sholayar Dam and the tea estates, and the return. Four or five days let you add Athirappilly or Topslip. The same car and driver stay with you throughout, billed on total kilometres and hours.
