Vagamon Pine Forest
A few kilometres from town, the vagamon pine forest is a planted forest of tall, straight pines whose needle-covered floor and filtered light have made it a favourite with photographers and Malayalam film crews. The walking trails are short and gentle, and the forest is noticeably cooler than the open meadows. Visit in the morning or late afternoon for the best light, and stay on marked paths.
Kurisumala
One of the three sacred hills that give Vagamon its name as the Hill of Three Faiths. A path lined with the Stations of the Cross climbs to a chapel on the summit, and during Holy Week, especially Good Friday, thousands of pilgrims make the climb carrying crosses. Below the hill is the Kurisumala Ashram, a monastery founded in 1958 that blends Christian monastic life with Indian traditions and runs a well-known dairy farm.
Thangal Para and Murugan Mala
The other two sacred hills. Thangal Para holds the shrine of a Sufi saint, Sheikh Fariduddin Baba, beside a huge boulder balanced on the hilltop, with wide views across the ranges. Murugan Mala has a rock-cut shrine to Lord Murugan. That three faiths share these neighbouring hills, peacefully and for generations, is one of Vagamon's most striking stories.
Vagamon Paragliding

Marmala Waterfalls
About 20 kilometres away near Teekoy, Marmala falls drops roughly 200 feet into a deep natural pool, surrounded by rubber and forest. Reaching the base involves a short walk from the road. It is fullest from June to December. Swimming in the pool is dangerous and not permitted; enjoy it from the viewing areas.
Ilaveezhapoonchira
The name means the valley where leaves do not fall, because the surrounding hills hold no trees. About 30 kilometres from Vagamon, this high meadow valley becomes a shallow lake during the monsoon and offers dramatic sunrise and sunset views. The last stretch is steep, and some visitors switch to local jeeps for the final climb.

Land of the Vaigai Dam
Turning south-west, the road reaches Batlagundu, where the ghat road to Kodaikanal begins, and the Palani Hills rise to the right. Theni lies in a broad, fertile valley between the Western Ghats and the Varusanadu hills. Close to town, the Vaigai Dam, built in 1959 on the river that flows on to Madurai, has landscaped gardens that make a pleasant short stop.
