About 60 kilometres away, jog falls is where the Sharavathi drops around 253 metres in four streams — Raja, Rani, Roarer and Rocket. It is the most famous waterfall in Karnataka and an easy stop on the way in or out, best seen at full flow in the monsoon and the weeks after.
Burude Falls
About 20 kilometres from Siddapur on the Kumta road, Burude is a series of cascades in a forested valley. The upper tier forms a natural amphitheatre where visitors sit and watch the spray. Access can be difficult or closed in heavy rain.
Marikamba Temple, Sirsi
The marikamba temple sirsi is one of the most important goddess temples in Karnataka, built in the late seventeenth century. Its bi-annual jatre draws huge crowds, and the temple's walls carry distinctive Kavi art murals in red and white.
Sahasralinga
On the Shalmala river near Sirsi, sahasralinga is a riverbed carved with hundreds of Shiva lingas and Nandi figures, made under the Sonda rulers. They are best seen between November and May, when the water is low and the carvings are exposed.
Yana Rocks
Two towering black karst rock outcrops rise out of the forest at Yana, with a cave shrine at the base. The walk from the parking area passes through dense forest, and yana caves are among the most striking natural landmarks in the Western Ghats.
Banavasi Madhukeshwara Temple
Banavasi was the capital of the Kadamba dynasty, one of the earliest native Kannada kingdoms. The Madhukeshwara Temple, on the banks of the Varada river, holds carvings spanning several dynasties and is the focus of the annual Kadambotsava festival.
Benne Hole Falls
Off the Sirsi–Kumta road, Benne Hole drops in a single plume into a forest pool, reached by a short trek through the trees. It is quieter than the better-known falls and suits groups who enjoy a walk.

Gubbi, just beyond Tumakuru, is remembered as the home of Gubbi Veeranna's theatre company, a founding force in Kannada professional drama. The road then runs through coconut country to Tiptur, the "Copra Capital of Karnataka", whose markets trade dried coconut across India. Tiptur's highway restaurants make it the classic breakfast halt, with fresh idli, vada and filter coffee around 7:00 AM.
Gateway of Malnad
Shivamogga is the "Gateway of Malnad", where the dry plains give way to the rain-fed hill country. The Tunga river flows through the city, and the Sakrebyle elephant camp and the lion safari at Tyavarekoppa lie close by. Shivamogga is the natural lunch halt, with plenty of restaurants serving Malnad meals.
Sandalwood Carving Town
The road climbs through areca and pepper gardens to Sagar, the "Sandalwood Carving Town", known for the fine work of its Gudigar artisans. Keladi and Ikkeri, the old Nayaka capitals, sit just outside town. Sagar is a good place to break the journey if you prefer to reach the falls the next morning.
Areca and spice town of Uttara Kannada
Siddapur is an "Areca and spice town of Uttara Kannada", surrounded by areca, pepper and cardamom gardens and dense forest. It is one of the two base towns for Unchalli, with basic hotels and homestays. Fill up fuel here, as there are no pumps on the final stretch. Siddapur's small eateries serve simple Malnad meals, and this is the last reliable place for food before the falls, so stock up on water and snacks as well.
Keppa Joga, the Deafening Falls
From Siddapur the road narrows through quiet forest villages to Heggarane, the last settlement before the falls. A short drive on brings you to the parking area. From here a walk of about 200 steps leads to the viewing decks of "Keppa Joga, the Deafening Falls", where the Aghanashini thunders into the gorge. Allow at least an hour here to walk down, rest at the decks and climb back up at an easy pace, and wear shoes with good grip, as the steps stay damp for much of the year.
