Girivalam, the barefoot circumambulation of Arunachala, follows a roughly 14-kilometre path lined with eight Ashta Lingams, shrines, tanks and mandapams. It can be done any day, but full moon nights draw vast crowds who walk through the night chanting. Allow three to four hours at a steady pace. Many pilgrims start from the temple's eastern gate after evening darshan. Wear light clothing, carry water and keep valuables to a minimum.
Sri Ramanasramam
The ashram of Sri Ramana Maharshi, on the Girivalam path at the southern foot of the hill, is where the sage lived from the 1920s until 1950. His samadhi shrine, the old hall where he gave darshan, and the meditation halls remain open to visitors, and the atmosphere of silence is striking. Visitors are expected to dress modestly and keep noise to a minimum. The ashram library and bookstore are worth a visit.
Skandashram and Virupaksha Cave
A path from near Ramanasramam climbs the hillside to Virupaksha Cave, where Ramana Maharshi lived and meditated for many years, and a little higher to Skandashram, where he stayed before moving down to the plains. The walk takes twenty to thirty minutes each way and offers wonderful views over the temple gopurams and the town. Go early in the morning before the rocks heat up.
Seshadri Swamigal and Yogi Ramsuratkumar Ashrams
Tiruvannamalai has long attracted saints and seekers. The ashram of Seshadri Swamigal, a revered contemporary of Ramana Maharshi, stands close to Ramanasramam on the Girivalam path. A little further, the Yogi Ramsuratkumar ashram, with its large meditation hall, draws many devotees. Both are peaceful places to pause during or after Girivalam.
Sathanur Dam
About 30 kilometres from town, Sathanur Dam holds back the Thenpennai river among low wooded hills. The gardens below the dam, a crocodile breeding centre and boating on the reservoir make it a pleasant half-day outing, especially for families with children who need a break from temple visits.
Gingee Fort
Around 38 kilometres toward Tindivanam, the Gingee Fort spreads across three granite hills connected by massive walls, once described by European travellers as the Troy of the East. The Rajagiri citadel is a steep but rewarding climb, with granaries, temples, a kalyana mahal and sweeping views across the plains at the top. Start early, as the climb is hard in the afternoon heat.
Jawadhu Hills
North-west of Tiruvannamalai, the Jawadhu Hills are a quiet range of forests, sandalwood groves and tribal villages at around 1,000 metres. Beema Falls near Jamunamarathur, the Kavalur observatory, one of the largest optical telescope sites in India, and the cool air make it a good addition for anyone staying two nights.

The six-lane NH44 runs fast through rocky hills to Krishnagiri, the leading mango-growing district of Tamil Nadu. Between April and July, roadside stalls are piled high with Alphonso, Banganapalli, Neelam and Totapuri mangoes, and the district holds an annual mango festival. The Krishnagiri reservoir and the old hill fort are visible from the highway. This is the natural breakfast halt, with large, clean restaurants near the NH44 junction. Where the Pilgrim Road Leaves the Highway
At Krishnagiri the cab leaves NH44 and turns east onto NH77, the road that runs all the way to Tindivanam and Puducherry. Soon after Chengam, Arunachala appears on the horizon, and pilgrims in the car often fall silent at the sight.
