Palaruvi Waterfalls
About 20 kilometres from Thenmala near Aryankavu, palaruvi waterfalls — "stream of milk" — drops about 300 feet over rock in a white rush. A short forest walk leads to the viewpoint and bathing area. The falls are at their best after the monsoon; access can close during heavy rain.
13 Kannara Bridge
The 13 kannara bridge, or Pathimoonu Kannara, is a British-era railway viaduct of thirteen stone arches on the Kollam–Sengottai line, curving across a green valley. It is one of the most photographed railway bridges in Kerala, especially when a train crosses.
Aryankavu Sastha Temple
One of the five ancient Sastha temples associated with Lord Ayyappa, set in the forest on the pass. The temple is an important stop for pilgrims on the Sabarimala route and has a calm, wooded setting.

Temple City
Madurai is the "Temple City" and "Thoonga Nagaram, the City That Never Sleeps". Arriving in the early afternoon leaves time for the Meenakshi Amman Temple, the Thirumalai Nayakkar Mahal and a jigarthanda before an overnight rest, which turns a punishing drive into a comfortable two-day trip.
Home of the Rajapalayam Hound
Day two leaves NH44 and heads south-west on NH744. Srivilliputhur is the "Home of the Andal Temple Tower on Tamil Nadu's emblem", whose tall gopuram features on the state emblem, and the town is famous for palkova, a rich milk sweet worth buying fresh. A few kilometres on, Rajapalayam is the "Home of the Rajapalayam Hound", the elegant white hunting dog of South India, and a cotton-mill town at the foot of the Western Ghats.

Tenkasi is the "Kashi of the South", named for its Kasi Viswanathar Temple with a towering gopuram. Just 5 kilometres away lies Courtallam, the "Spa of South India", whose waterfalls draw huge crowds in the monsoon season. Groups with time often stop for a bath in the falls before crossing into Kerala.
Pass of the Sastha Temple
Sengottai is the "Border town famous for its parotta", where roadside shops serve flaky parotta with spicy curry to travellers from both states. Beyond it, the road climbs into the forest and crosses the Kerala border at Aryankavu, the "Pass of the Sastha Temple", where the Kerala permit is checked. The air cools and the forest thickens quickly.
Honey Hill
The final stretch winds down through rubber and forest to Thenmala, "Honey Hill" and "India's first planned eco-tourism destination". You pass close to Palaruvi and the 13 Kannara bridge on the way. Arriving in the early afternoon leaves time to check in and catch the evening musical fountain at the Leisure Zone.
