Kunthipuzha River and the Hanging Bridge
From Sairandhri, a short forest walk leads down to the Kunthipuzha river, named after Kunti, mother of the Pandavas. A suspension bridge crosses the clear, fast-flowing water, and the river is the lifeline of the whole valley. This was the river that the proposed hydroelectric project would have dammed, so standing on the bridge is a reminder of how close the forest came to disappearing.
Wildlife of Silent Valley
Silent Valley is best known for the endangered lion-tailed macaque, with its silver mane and black coat, and the park holds one of its most important populations. Nilgiri langurs, Malabar giant squirrels, gaur and elephants are also found here, along with a remarkable variety of birds, butterflies and flowering plants, several found nowhere else. Sightings are never guaranteed in dense rainforest, which is exactly what makes a good one so memorable.
Mukkali — Gateway to Silent Valley
Mukkali is the small forest settlement where every visit to the park begins. The Kerala Forest Department office here handles safari bookings and entry, and the Bhavani river flows past the village. The forest department dormitory and a few local stays make Mukkali a convenient base for an early start. Arrive with time to spare, as safari slots fill up quickly on weekends and holidays.
Attappadi and Malleeswaran Mudi
Attappadi is a highland region of rolling hills and tribal villages, home to the Irula, Muduga and Kurumba communities. The Malleeswaran Mudi peak, which rises above the valley, is sacred to the local tribes, and the Shivaratri festival here draws large crowds. The drive through Attappadi, with its farms, streams and distant views of the Nilgiris, is one of the highlights of the whole trip.
Anaikatti and the Salim Ali Centre
Anaikatti sits on the Tamil Nadu and Kerala border in a forested valley that is part of an important elephant corridor. It is home to the Salim Ali Centre for Ornithology and Natural History, named after India's most famous bird scientist. The area is dotted with eco-resorts and is a quieter overnight option than Coimbatore city for nature lovers.
Siruvani Waterfalls and Dam
West of Coimbatore on the Kerala border, Siruvani is famous for its water, often described as among the sweetest in the world, which supplies much of Coimbatore. The waterfalls and the reservoir are set in thick forest, and access is regulated by the forest department. It is a peaceful half-day detour for families staying in Coimbatore.
Isha Yoga Centre and Adiyogi
About 30 kilometres west of Coimbatore, at the foot of the Velliangiri mountains, the Isha Yoga Centre is home to the 112-foot Adiyogi bust, one of the most photographed sights in Tamil Nadu. The Dhyanalinga meditation hall and the evening light show at Adiyogi draw large crowds. It works well as a stop on the first evening or the return journey, and is one of the most common add-ons to this route.

The road passes Sankagiri, whose hilltop fort is visible from the highway, and then crosses the Kaveri at Kumarapalayam.
