Sigandur Bridge
Opened in July 2025, the sigandur bridge spans 2.44 kilometres across the Sharavathi backwaters and is India's second-longest cable-stayed bridge. Driving across it, with water stretching to the forested hills on both sides, has quickly become one of the highlights of the trip. Sharavathi Backwaters and Linganamakki Reservoir
The sharavathi backwaters were formed by the Linganamakki Dam, which feeds one of Karnataka's largest hydroelectric projects. The reservoir fingers deep into the forest, dotted with islands and misty in the early morning. Sunset over the water near Sigandur is quiet and memorable.
Jog Falls
About 45 kilometres from Sigandur, jog falls is where the Sharavathi drops around 253 metres in four streams known as Raja, Rani, Roarer and Rocket, making it one of the highest plunge waterfalls in India. It is at its most dramatic in the monsoon, from July to September, when the whole gorge fills with spray.
Keladi Rameshwara Temple and Museum
Keladi, about 8 kilometres from Sagar, was the first capital of the Keladi Nayakas, who ruled this region from the sixteenth to the eighteenth century. The Rameshwara and Veerabhadra temples have fine carvings, and the small museum preserves coins, palm-leaf manuscripts and weapons from the period.
Ikkeri Aghoreshwara Temple
Ikkeri, the later Nayaka capital, is home to the Aghoreshwara Temple, a large granite structure blending Hoysala, Vijayanagara and Dravidian styles, with a huge Nandi facing the sanctum. It is peaceful, uncrowded and easily combined with Keladi.
Varadahalli Sridhara Swamy Ashram
Set in forest a short drive from Sagar, this ashram of Sri Sridhara Swamy is a place of quiet reflection, with a natural spring called Varadatheertha. Many pilgrims visit it on the same trip as Sigandur.
Honnemaradu
An island and headland on the Linganamakki backwaters known for coracle rides, kayaking and lakeside camping. Adventure groups often add a night here, and it gives a very different view of the reservoir from the temple side.

Its copra market is one of the largest in the country, and the smell of drying coconut hangs over the town in season. Tiptur has good breakfast restaurants along the highway, making it a natural halt for idli, vada and strong coffee around 7:30 AM.
Gateway to Chikkamagaluru coffee country
Kadur is the "Gateway to Chikkamagaluru coffee country", where roads branch west to the coffee estates and the Baba Budangiri range. The land begins to change here, with the first hints of the Western Ghats on the horizon and areca plantations replacing coconut. Birur, its twin railway town, sits just beside it.
Steel Town of Karnataka
Bhadravathi is the "Steel Town of Karnataka", built around the Visvesvaraya Iron and Steel Plant established in the early twentieth century, along with the Mysore Paper Mills. The Bhadra river flows through the town, and the Lakshmi Narasimha Temple is a well-preserved Hoysala shrine. The industrial skyline is a surprising sight on the edge of the Malnad.
Gateway of Malnad
Shivamogga is the "Gateway of Malnad", where the plains end and the rain-fed forest country begins. The Tunga river runs through the city, and attractions include Shivappa Nayaka Palace, the Tyavarekoppa lion and tiger safari and the Sakrebyle elephant camp on the Tirthahalli road. Shivamogga is the ideal lunch halt, with a wide choice of restaurants serving Malnad meals. Elapsed time: about five and a half hours.
Sandalwood Carving Town
The road climbs gently through areca and pepper gardens to Sagar, the "Sandalwood Carving Town", famous for the intricate work of its Gudigar craftsmen, whose sandalwood and rosewood pieces are prized across India. Sagar is also the land of the Keladi Nayakas, with Keladi and Ikkeri both minutes away. Families on a two-day trip usually stay overnight here, where hotel options are widest.

From Sagar the road heads west to Ambaragodlu on the edge of the backwaters.
