Sahasralinga on the Shalmala River

Marikamba Temple, Sirsi
The most important shrine in Sirsi, dedicated to Goddess Marikamba, considered the elder sister of the Durga of the region. The temple walls are painted in the Kavi art style, a traditional Konkan and Malnad technique in red and white. The Marikamba Jatre, held every alternate year in February or March, is one of the largest temple fairs in Karnataka and draws visitors from across the state. Book early if your dates coincide.
Sonda — Swarnavalli and Vadiraja Mutts
Sonda, about 20 kilometres from Sirsi, was the capital of the Sonda kings who built Sahasralinga. Today it is best known for the Swarnavalli Mutt and the Vadiraja Mutt, both important centres of religious learning, along with the scattered ruins of the old fort. It is a quiet, deeply atmospheric place, and easily combined with Sahasralinga in the same morning.
Banavasi Madhukeshwara Temple
Banavasi, around 23 kilometres from Sirsi, was the capital of the Kadamba dynasty, the first native kingdom of Karnataka, and is considered one of the oldest towns in the state. The Madhukeshwara Temple holds a stone chariot-shaped mantapa and a remarkable carved stone cot. The Kadambotsava cultural festival is held here each year. History-minded travellers should allow at least two hours.
Unchalli Falls
Also called Lushington Falls, Unchalli is where the Aghanashini river plunges over a hundred metres into a deep forested gorge, about 35 kilometres from Sirsi. A short walk and a flight of steps lead to a viewpoint facing the falls. The flow is at its most dramatic from August to December. The roar can be heard well before you see the water.
Yana Rocks
Two enormous black karst limestone outcrops, Bhairaveshwara Shikhara and Mohini Shikhara, rise out of the forest about 40 kilometres from Sirsi. A cave shrine sits at the base of the larger rock with water dripping onto a natural linga. The walk from the parking area is about half a kilometre on a paved path. Early morning visits beat the heat and the weekend crowds.
Shivaganga Falls
A seasonal waterfall on the Sonda river, around 40 kilometres from Sirsi, where the water drops in stages through thick forest. It is less visited than Unchalli and has a quieter feel, with a viewpoint and a short trail. Best from the end of the monsoon to December.
Magod Falls and Sathodi Falls, Yellapur
Toward Yellapur, Magod Falls sees the Bedti river drop in two stages into a deep valley, with the Jenukallu Gudda viewpoint nearby offering a sweeping sunset view over the Western Ghats. Sathodi Falls, a smaller and gentler cascade, is a popular picnic spot. Together they make a good half-day extension for families with a full day in hand.

Its seven concentric rings of walls, the Elu Suttina Kote, wrap around granite hills. The fort is inseparable from the legend of Onake Obavva, who defended a narrow opening in the walls against Hyder Ali's soldiers armed only with a pestle. The opening is still called Obavvana Kindi. If you have time on the return drive, give the fort two hours. The wind turbines on the surrounding hills are a sign you are entering one of Karnataka's windiest belts. Manchester of Karnataka and the home of Benne Dosa
Davanagere was once called the Manchester of Karnataka for its cotton textile mills, and though most of the mills have gone, the town remains a major commercial centre. For travellers it has one irresistible attraction: Davanagere Benne Dosa, a crisp, butter-soaked dosa served with coconut chutney and potato palya.
