Bidadi, 35 kilometres out, is Thatte Idli Town — the flat, plate-sized idli served with butter and chutney at roadside eateries is reason enough for a first halt. Bidadi is also an industrial hub, home to a large Toyota manufacturing plant. Fifteen kilometres further lies Ramanagara, the Silk City of Karnataka, which runs one of the largest silk cocoon markets in Asia. The granite hills rising on your right are Ramadevara Betta, where the film Sholay was shot in the 1970s and which is today a sanctuary for the endangered long-billed vulture. Elapsed time: roughly 50 minutes.
Sugar City of Karnataka
Maddur is the Home of the Maddur Vada, a crisp, flat fritter made from rice flour, semolina, onion and curry leaves. The story goes that it was invented at the Maddur railway station refreshment stall to feed hungry train passengers quickly, and it has since travelled to menus across South India. Many Bangalore families time their breakfast halt here, and the highway restaurants on this stretch handle groups quickly. A few kilometres on, the Shimsha river crosses under the road on its way to the Kaveri. Mandya, the Sugar City of Karnataka, follows at the 100 kilometre mark. The district is carpeted with sugarcane fields fed by the Krishna Raja Sagar canals, and between December and April you will see bullock carts and tractors stacked high with cane heading for the mills. Fresh sugarcane juice and jaggery from roadside stalls make a sweet mid-morning break,. The expressway keeps traffic moving quickly through this stretch. Elapsed time: about one hour forty minutes.
Fortress of Tipu Sultan
Srirangapatna is the Island Fortress of Tipu Sultan, built on an island in the Kaveri and once the capital of the Mysore kingdom under Hyder Ali and Tipu. The town takes its name from the Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple, one of the most important Vishnu shrines in the region, which predates the fort by centuries. Within a few kilometres you can see Daria Daulat Bagh, Tipu's summer palace with its painted teak walls depicting his victories, the Gumbaz mausoleum where Tipu and his parents are buried, and the spot where he fell defending the fort in 1799. Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary, just three kilometres away, is a string of river islets where painted storks, spoonbills, pelicans and river terns nest between June and November, and a short boat ride brings you close to the colonies and the basking marsh crocodiles. On a direct run to Masinagudi most groups simply cross the Kaveri bridges and continue, but if you have time on the return leg, an hour here is well spent. Elapsed time: about two hours ten minutes.
City of Palaces
Mysore, the City of Palaces, is the natural halfway mark and the last big city before the forest. The expressway ends here and your driver will take the Mysore Ring Road towards Nanjangud, which avoids the busy city centre. If you have not had breakfast yet, this is the place for it; if you have, consider a coffee halt instead, because nothing between here and Masinagudi matches Mysore for choice. Families with an extra hour often stop for a quick look at Mysore Palace or pick up Mysore Pak, sandalwood soap and silk sarees from the Devaraja Market area. Those planning the return journey can make Mysore a proper sightseeing day on the way back, with the palace illuminated on Sunday evenings. Kashi of the South
Nanjangud, known as Dakshina Kashi or the Kashi of the South, sits on the banks of the Kapila river 25 kilometres south of Mysore on NH766. The Srikanteshwara Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is one of the largest temple complexes in Karnataka, with a towering gopuram visible from the highway and a sprawling hall of pillars inside. Pilgrims believe Shiva here acts as a healer, and the temple has been patronised by rulers from the Gangas to the Wodeyars and even Tipu Sultan. The town is equally known for the Nanjangud Rasabale, a small, fragrant banana with a Geographical Indication tag, and for its famous herbal tooth powder, manufactured here for over a century. Devotees often plan a short darshan here on the outbound trip, particularly early in the morning when the temple is quiet, and the stop adds only thirty to forty minutes. Beyond Nanjangud the landscape flattens into farmland, and the Nilgiri blue hills start to appear on the horizon. Elapsed time: about three hours ten minutes.
Tiger Reserve
Gundlupet is the Land of Sunflower and Marigold Fields. From roughly July to October the farms on either side of the highway burst into yellow and orange, and the flowers are grown commercially for oil and for the perfume and dye industry. Please ask the farmer before walking into a field for photos. Gundlupet is also the junction where NH766 turns right for Wayanad and Kerala; you continue straight on NH181. About twenty kilometres to the west, Himavad Gopalaswamy Betta, the highest point in Bandipur, is reached by forest department buses from the foothills, and makes a worthwhile detour if you have time. Soon after, you enter Bandipur, the Tiger Reserve on the Nilgiri Border and one of India's first Project Tiger reserves. Speed humps slow traffic through the core zone and stopping or getting out of the car is prohibited, but elephants, gaur, spotted deer and langurs are routinely seen from the road. Karnataka Forest Department safaris leave from the Bandipur reception if you want to break the journey here. Remember that this stretch is closed to vehicles from 9:00 PM to 6:00 AM. Gateway to Mudumalai
The Kakkanhalla check post marks the Karnataka–Tamil Nadu border, and here the interstate permit and Nilgiris e-pass are verified. Almost at once you are in Mudumalai, and the forest thickens around the Moyar river. Theppakadu, Home of One of Asia's Oldest Elephant Camps, is the main junction; the Mudumalai reception, safari counter and elephant camp are all here. The highway continues straight towards Gudalur, while your cab turns left onto the narrow road to Masinagudi, seven kilometres away through dry deciduous forest where elephant herds and spotted deer often graze along the verge. Yes. The Karnataka to Tamil Nadu interstate permit is arranged by us and billed at actuals. Masinagudi falls in the Nilgiris district, where the e-pass system applies to vehicles from outside the district, and it is checked at the Masinagudi entry point. Rules change by season, so we confirm the current requirement and help with the e-pass before departure.
The Kalhatty ghat with its 36 hairpin bends is the shortest way up, but tourist vehicle movement on it has been restricted at various times and the road is closed at night. When it is not permitted, our driver takes the Gudalur route, which adds about 30 kilometres. Either way, the cab can stay with you for an Ooty day trip or an onward bangalore to ooty cab itinerary.
For two to four passengers a sedan is comfortable on the highway, but for families of five to seven, or anyone planning to go up to Ooty, we recommend an Innova Crysta or Innova Hycross for the extra space and ground clearance.
