Further north near Cherthala, Andhakaranazhi is where a backwater channel meets the sea, giving it a mix of calm water on one side and surf on the other. It is quieter than Alappuzha Beach and has a small lighthouse nearby. A good half-day outing from Marari by cab.
Alleppey Backwaters and Houseboats
Just 14 kilometres south, the alleppey backwaters are Kerala's most famous waterscape: a web of canals, lakes and rivers lined with paddy fields and villages. You can take a day cruise, a shikara ride on the narrow canals, or an overnight houseboat. Punnamada Lake is also the venue of the Nehru Trophy Boat Race held each August, when giant snake boats race in front of packed stands.
Alappuzha Beach and Lighthouse
Alappuzha Beach has an old pier stretching into the sea and a lighthouse you can climb for views over the town and coast. It is livelier than Marari, with snack stalls and families in the evenings, so it makes a good contrast for one sunset during your stay.
Kuttanad and Pathiramanal Island
Kuttanad, often called the rice bowl of Kerala, is known for farming paddy below sea level, protected by dykes and water channels. Boat trips from Alappuzha pass through it and continue to Pathiramanal, a small green island in Vembanad Lake popular with birdwatchers. Ambalapuzha Sri Krishna Temple
About 25 kilometres south, this traditional Kerala temple is famous for its palpayasam, a sweet rice and milk offering prepared in the temple kitchen. Most travellers do not stop here unless they want to shop, but it is a useful landmark for timing: reaching the Erode stretch by around 8:30 AM means the day is on schedule. The change is immediate: lush paddy fields, palm-lined villages, Malayalam signboards and the green hills of the Nelliampathy range to the south. Palakkad town has an old fort built by Hyder Ali, and the district is one of Kerala's largest rice-growing areas. The highway continues towards Thrissur through the Kuthiran tunnel, the first road tunnel in Kerala, which has eased what used to be a slow ghat section.
Cultural Capital of Kerala
Thrissur is famous for the Thrissur Pooram temple festival and the Vadakkunnathan Temple at the heart of the city, surrounded by the large Thekkinkadu Maidan. The city is known as the cultural capital of Kerala for its arts, music and festival traditions.
