Arichal Munai
The very end of the road, where a circle topped with the national emblem marks India’s land’s end. On one side the water is shallow and calm; on the other it is darker and rougher, and the meeting of the two is clearly visible. A shoal line running towards Sri Lanka marks the start of Ram Setu, or Adam’s Bridge. Swimming is unsafe here, however inviting the water looks.
Kothandaramaswamy Temple
On the Dhanushkodi road about 12 kilometres from Rameswaram, this small temple is where Vibhishana is believed to have surrendered to Lord Rama. It was the only structure in the area to survive the 1964 cyclone, which gives it special meaning for visitors, and the causeway to it offers wide sea views.
Ramanathaswamy Temple
The reason most people come. One of the twelve Jyotirlingas and one of the four Char Dham, the temple is famous for its pillared corridors, among the longest of any temple in India, and its 22 sacred wells, or theerthams, where pilgrims bathe before darshan. Expect crowds at dawn and on festival days, and carry a change of clothes.
Agni Theertham
The beach directly east of the temple, where pilgrims take a ritual dip in the sea before entering Ramanathaswamy. The water is calm and shallow, and the morning scene, with families, priests and sunrise over the Bay of Bengal, is a quintessential Rameswaram sight.
Dr APJ Abdul Kalam National Memorial
Rameswaram is the hometown of the former President and missile scientist, and his memorial at Pei Karumbu, opened in 2017, displays his life through models, paintings and personal belongings. His family home on Mosque Street, now the House of Kalam museum, is a short drive away. Both are excellent for students.
Pamban Bridge
The link between the mainland and the island. The original railway bridge, opened in 1914, was India’s first sea bridge, and its successor, opened in 2025, is India’s first vertical-lift sea bridge. Panchamukhi Hanuman Temple
A small temple known for its floating stones, pumice-like rocks believed to come from the construction of Ram Setu. The five-faced Hanuman idol and the stones in their water tank make it a quick but memorable stop, particularly for children.
Gandhamadhana Parvatham
The highest point on the island, about three kilometres from the temple, with a shrine holding an impression believed to be Lord Rama’s footprints. The view across the island to the sea on both sides is best at sunset, and it takes less than an hour.

Little England of the British era
Your cab heads out along Hosur Road, past the Electronic City flyover, and crosses into Tamil Nadu at Attibele, where the interstate permit is checked. Starting early matters more on this leg than on any other: before six the run to Hosur takes under an hour, while after eight it can double. Hosur sits on a plateau nearly 900 metres high, and its cool, pleasant weather led British officers to call it Little England. Today it is a manufacturing town known for two-wheelers, trucks and aerospace parts, and for the greenhouses that grow roses for export. There is little to see from the highway, so drivers usually carry straight on and stop for tea once the traffic thins beyond the town. From here the NH44 runs as a wide four-lane road almost all the way to Madurai.
Krishnagiri
Mango Capital of South India
The plateau gives way to boulder-strewn hills and orchards, and within the hour you reach Krishnagiri. Mango groves line the highway on both sides, and from April to July the fruit stalls here are among the best on any road out of Bangalore, with Banganapalli, Alphonso and the local Totapuri piled high. The town takes its name from its black granite hills, and the ruins of a fort sit on the summit above. The Krishnagiri Reservoir lies a few kilometres off the highway. Because the Chennai highway branches off here, the junction is busy with trucks, but a clear flyover keeps things moving. Krishnagiri is the classic breakfast stop, with large, clean restaurants serving hot pongal, vadas and filter coffee from dawn.
Salem
Steel City of Tamil Nadu
A fast stretch through Dharmapuri district brings the Shevaroy Hills into view, and the highway sweeps into Salem on the bypass. Salem is known as the Steel City for the Salem Steel Plant, and it is also a major centre for sago, handloom silk and the region’s famous mangoes. Yercaud, the hill station above the city, is a steep 30 kilometre climb away and a good add-on for the return journey. Your driver stays on the bypass, so city traffic never slows the trip. Salem’s highway plazas are clean and well-run, making this a comfortable mid-morning halt for coffee and restrooms. Elapsed time is roughly three and a half hours.
Karur
Textile City of Tamil Nadu
South of Salem the land flattens and the first large poultry farms appear, a sure sign you are near Namakkal, which produces more eggs than any other district in India and calls itself the Egg City. The town’s landmark is the Anjaneyar Temple, where an 18-foot Hanuman stands open to the sky facing a Narasimha shrine across the road, beneath a rock fort. It is one of the most worthwhile short stops on the route. Forty kilometres on, Karur is one of India’s largest exporters of home textiles, bed linen and curtains; the factory outlets near the highway sell export-quality linen at surprisingly low prices. The Kalyana Pasupatheeswarar Temple on the Amaravathi river is the town’s spiritual centre. Elapsed time: about five hours.
Madurai
Temple City and the City That Never Sleeps
The road bends south-east through farmland to Dindigul, where locksmiths have hand-forged heavy padlocks for more than a century, earning it the name Lock City. It is even better known today for Dindigul biryani, made with short-grain seeraga samba rice, and most groups time lunch here. The rock fort above the town was held at different times by the Madurai Nayaks and Tipu Sultan. Another hour brings you into Madurai, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in India. The Meenakshi Amman Temple, with its towering painted gopurams and Hall of a Thousand Pillars, dominates the old city, and the streets stay lively late into the night, which is why Madurai is called Thoonga Nagaram, the city that never sleeps. We recommend the overnight halt here, with time for the temple’s evening ceremony.
Ramanathapuram
Land of the Sethupathi Kings
Day two begins on NH87, a smooth road heading east through dry, open country dotted with palmyra palms. Paramakudi, the main town on this stretch, is known for its handloom silk and cotton saris woven by the Saurashtrian community, and small weaving units line its side streets. Further on, Ramanathapuram was the seat of the Sethupathi rulers, the traditional guardians of the pilgrim route to Rameswaram. Their Ramalinga Vilasam palace holds fine 17th century murals and is worth an hour. Uthirakosamangai, about 15 kilometres south-west, has an ancient temple famous for its emerald Nataraja. Past Ramanathapuram the air turns salty and the sea appears on the horizon. Elapsed time from Madurai: around two and a half hours.
Rameswaram
Varanasi of the South
The road reaches the coast at Mandapam, the last town on the mainland and home to a large fishing harbour and a marine research centre on the edge of the Gulf of Mannar Marine National Park. Then comes the highlight of the drive: the 2.3 kilometre road bridge over the Pamban channel, with turquoise water on both sides and the rail bridges running just beside you. Your driver can pause at the viewpoint in the middle of the bridge. On the island, the road passes through Pamban town and Thangachimadam before entering Rameswaram, one of the holiest towns in India and often called the Varanasi of the South, since a pilgrimage to Kashi is traditionally completed here. Check in, then head to the temple or Agni Theertham.
Arichal Munai
Land’s End of India
The last 25 kilometres are the most striking of the whole journey. The road leaves Rameswaram past the Kothandaramaswamy Temple and then runs along a narrow spit of land with sea on both sides, sometimes only a few hundred metres wide. Until 2017 visitors had to switch to shared four-wheel drive vans on the sand; now a paved road runs right to the tip, so your cab can drive all the way. Stop first at the ruins of old Dhanushkodi, then continue to Arichal Munai for the land’s end. Access is generally permitted in daylight only, and visitors are asked to leave before sunset, so plan to arrive by mid-morning. Carry water, sunscreen and a hat, as there is almost no shade.

No. Dhanushkodi is generally open only during daylight, and visitors are asked to leave before sunset. There are no hotels in Dhanushkodi, so all stays are in Rameswaram, about 20 kilometres away. Our drivers plan the visit for the morning or early afternoon.
October to March is the most comfortable period, with cooler weather and calmer seas. April to June is very hot on the open sand. During strong monsoon winds, particularly from October to December, access to Arichal Munai can be closed at short notice for safety.
