Jami Masjid

Malik-e-Maidan
Its name means "Monarch of the Plains", and this is one of the largest medieval cannons in the world. Cast in the sixteenth century and brought to Bijapur as a prize of war, it sits on the Sherza Burj bastion. The muzzle is shaped like a lion's head swallowing an elephant, a detail worth looking for.
Bara Kaman
The unfinished mausoleum of Ali Adil Shah II was planned to surpass Gol Gumbaz. Only its grand arches were completed, and they stand today on a raised platform, striking against the open sky. It is a favourite spot for photographers.
Gagan Mahal
Built by Ali Adil Shah I, this royal palace once served as both a residence and an audience hall. Its three large arches, the central one especially wide, still frame the ruins, and the surrounding lawns are pleasant for an evening walk.
Upli Buruj
A tall circular watchtower built in the late sixteenth century, reached by an outside stone staircase. Two old cannons still rest on the top, and the view across the city's domes and minarets is one of the best in Vijayapura.
Taj Bawdi
A large stepped tank built in honour of Taj Sultana, queen of Ibrahim Adil Shah II. Its tall arched gateway and surrounding walls show how the Adil Shahis managed water for the growing city, and the reflection of the gateway in the water makes a good photograph.
Almatti Dam and Gardens
About sixty kilometres away, the Lal Bahadur Shastri Dam at Almatti holds back the Krishna river and forms a vast reservoir. Landscaped gardens, a rock garden and evening fountain shows make it a relaxing family outing, and it can be combined with Kudalasangama on the way in or out.
