Mahmud Gawan Madrasa
Built around 1472 by Mahmud Gawan, the Persian scholar who served as prime minister of the Bahmani court, this was one of the great colleges of the medieval Deccan, with lecture halls, a library and a mosque. Although partly ruined, its surviving minaret still shows traces of colourful glazed tiles. It stands in the old town between the fort and the Chaubara clock tower.
Bahmani Tombs at Ashtur
A few kilometres east of the city, the domed bahmani tombs hold the remains of the Bahmani sultans. The tomb of Ahmad Shah Wali is the most striking, with painted interiors and gold and vermilion calligraphy. The caretaker often uses a mirror to light up the faded paintings. Late afternoon light makes the domes glow.
Chaukhandi of Hazrat Khalil Ullah
Close to the Ashtur tombs, this octagonal mausoleum of a Sufi saint sits on a raised platform reached by a flight of steps. Its carved granite and calligraphy panels are finely detailed, and the site is calm and well kept.
Gurudwara Nanak Jhira Sahib
One of the most important Sikh shrines in South India, gurudwara nanak jhira sahib marks the spot associated with Guru Nanak's visit to Bidar, where a spring of fresh water is believed to have emerged. Narasimha Jharni Cave Temple
