Charpa Falls
About a kilometre and a half beyond the main falls, Charpa pours down the hillside right beside the road and under a small bridge. There is no ticket and no walk; your driver simply pulls over. It is a monsoon waterfall, best from June to September and thin by January.
Vazhachal Falls
Five kilometres upstream, vazhachal falls is a completely different shape: a long, stepped cascade that tumbles over wide slabs of rock instead of plunging in one drop. There is a small garden and coffee stall, and the forest setting is calmer than Athirappilly.
Thumboormuzhi Dam and Butterfly Garden
On the approach road from Chalakudy, this small dam is part of the Ezhattumugham nature tourism project. The main draw is the hanging bridge slung across the Chalakudy river, with a butterfly garden, a watch tower and a children’s play area alongside. A good family stop on the way in.
Hornbill Forests of Athirappilly and Vazhachal
This forest belt is the only place in the Western Ghats where four species of hornbill are recorded together, including the Great Hornbill and the Malabar Pied Hornbill. Lion-tailed macaques, elephants and giant squirrels share the same forest. Early mornings are best, and several resorts arrange guided walks.
Peringalkuthu Dam and the Malakkappara Forest Drive
Beyond Vazhachal the road climbs through dense forest past the Peringalkuthu reservoir and Sholayar towards the tea estates of Malakkappara on the Tamil Nadu border. It is one of the finest forest drives in South India, with a real chance of seeing elephants. Entry is through a forest check post with daytime-only access, so the trip needs an early start and your driver will plan the timing around it.

Sixty kilometres away in the heart of Thrissur, this ancient Shiva temple is a fine example of classical Kerala temple architecture, with timber halls, mural paintings and a vast surrounding ground called the Thekkinkadu Maidan. It is the stage for Thrissur Pooram each April or May. Entry to the inner temple is restricted to Hindus, and Guruvayur is a further 28 kilometres from Thrissur for pilgrims.

Hogenakkal, whose name means smoking rock in Kannada, is where the Kaveri enters Tamil Nadu through a series of rocky gorges famous for coracle rides,. Continuing south, the highway descends into Salem, a large city ringed by the Shevaroy Hills and known as the Steel City for its steel plant, as well as for mangoes, sago and handloom silk. The hill station of Yercaud is a 30 kilometre climb from the city. On a direct run your driver takes the bypass and avoids city traffic entirely, but Salem’s highway plazas have clean washrooms and good food, which makes it a sensible mid-morning halt. From Salem the route leaves NH44 and turns west onto NH544 towards Coimbatore and Kerala. Elapsed time: around three and a half to four hours.

NH544 runs west past Sankagiri, where a massive rock fort rises straight out of the plain; it was an important garrison under Tipu Sultan and later the British. The road then crosses the Kaveri at Kumarapalayam and Bhavani, where the Bhavani river joins the Kaveri at a sacred confluence marked by the Sangameswarar Temple, a spot many families on pilgrimage stop at briefly. Erode lies just south of the highway and is one of the largest turmeric markets in the world, which is why it is known as the Turmeric City, or sometimes the Yellow City. Bhavani is famous for its thick cotton carpets called jamakkalam. The highway itself stays on a bypass, so you see farms and warehouses rather than city streets. Elapsed time: roughly four and a half hours.

The road passes Perundurai and Vijayamangalam before reaching Avinashi, home to an old Shiva temple and the closest point to Tiruppur, just 15 kilometres south. Tiruppur is the Knitwear Capital of India, producing a large share of the country’s cotton knitwear exports, and its factory outlets are popular with travellers who want branded T-shirts and innerwear at export-surplus prices. Beyond Avinashi the highway skirts Coimbatore on the bypass. Coimbatore earned the name Manchester of South India from its cotton mills, and today it is a manufacturing and engineering hub with a pleasant climate thanks to the Palakkad Gap. It is the natural lunch halt and the best overnight option if you prefer to split the trip, with plenty of good hotels near the bypass. Elapsed time: about six and a half hours.

Leaving Coimbatore, the road heads for the Palakkad Gap, a 30 kilometre wide break in the Western Ghats that has been the main land route between Tamil Nadu and Kerala for centuries. Almost immediately the landscape changes. The highway runs through Alathur and Vadakkanchery before climbing into the Kuthiran hills, where twin tunnels, the first road tunnels built in Kerala, now carry traffic through the ridge and have removed one of the worst bottlenecks on the old route. The Peechi dam and wildlife sanctuary lie just off the highway to the east. Beyond the tunnels you descend towards Thrissur, the Cultural Capital of Kerala, famous across India for Thrissur Pooram, when caparisoned elephants and massed percussion fill the city each April or May. For most travellers the Salem and Coimbatore route is better. It is four-lane highway almost all the way with no night restrictions. The Mysore, Gudalur and Nilambur route is slightly shorter on the map but includes ghat roads and passes through Bandipur and Mudumalai, where night traffic is restricted, so it only suits a daytime run.
Both are available. A one-way drop suits travellers continuing to Kochi or flying out of Cochin airport, and we quote it separately. A round trip keeps the same car and driver with you for sightseeing at Athirappilly, Vazhachal, Thrissur or Guruvayur, and is billed on total kilometres and hours with a per-day minimum shown in the quote.
The falls are most powerful from June to September, though some viewpoints can close after very heavy rain. October to January offers strong flow with easier walking and pleasant weather, while March to May sees much lower volume.
Yes. Athirappilly sits in a forest area and the Kerala Forest Department does not permit night travel on the forest stretches, particularly beyond Vazhachal towards Malakkappara, which is controlled through a check post. The falls are open only in daylight, and our drivers plan arrival accordingly.
