Places to Visit in Thekkady

Periyar Lake and the Tiger Reserve

Periyar Lake and the Tiger Reserve

The lake was created in 1895 by the Mullaperiyar dam, drowning a valley of forest, and the standing dead trees in the shallows are its signature image. The reserve around it covers around nine hundred square kilometres of the Cardamom Hills and holds elephant, gaur, sambar, wild dog and tiger, though the last is rarely seen. The boat trip takes you along the shoreline where animals come down to drink. Visit on the earliest trip you can get. Sightings are never guaranteed and anyone promising them is selling something, but elephant and gaur at the water are common enough on a morning boat.

Sightings are never guaranteed and anyone promising them is selling something, but elephant and gaur at the water are common enough on a morning boat.

Bamboo Rafting and Jungle Walks

Bamboo Rafting and Jungle Walks

The reserve runs a set of small-group programmes that most visitors never look into: bamboo rafting, a full-day trip combining trekking and rafting across the lake; the border hiking programme; night patrols; and guided nature walks, several of them led by guides drawn from local tribal communities including former poachers. Numbers are strictly limited and they book independently of the boat. Visit these if you want the forest rather than a view of it - they are considerably more rewarding than the boat for anyone reasonably fit, and they are the reason to give Thekkady two nights rather than one

The Spice Plantations

The Spice Plantations

Kumily sits in the middle of the cardamom belt and plantation tours run from the town - cardamom, pepper, clove, nutmeg, vanilla and coffee growing together under shade, with a guide explaining what each is and how it is processed. Some are working estates and some are set up for visitors; the working ones are better. The spice shops along the Kumily main street sell direct and the quality is high, particularly the cardamom. Visit a plantation in the morning and buy in the town afterwards. It costs a couple of hours and it is the thing people bring home from Thekkady.

Mullaperiyar Dam

Mullaperiyar Dam

The dam that made the lake, built by the British between 1887 and 1895 in lime surkhi masonry to divert the west-flowing Periyar eastward through a tunnel into the Vaigai basin - an engineering achievement of real ambition for its time, and the reason the dry Tamil districts to the east have water. It is also the subject of a long-running dispute between Kerala, where it stands, and Tamil Nadu, which operates it under a nineteenth-century lease. Access for visitors is restricted and arrangements vary; check the current position locally rather than planning a day around it.

Kalaripayattu and Kathakali

Kalaripayattu and Kathakali

Kumily has several venues running evening performances of Kalaripayattu, the Kerala martial art, and Kathakali, with the make-up applied on stage beforehand, which is half the interest. These are shows put on for visitors rather than ritual performances and nobody pretends otherwise - but the Kalaripayattu in particular is genuinely impressive, and for anyone who will not get to a temple festival it is a reasonable introduction to both forms. Visit in the evening; performances run to a fixed schedule and seats are worth booking in season.

Peermade and the Tea Estates

Peermade and the Tea Estates

North-west of Kumily the road climbs to Vandiperiyar and Peermade, through tea and cardamom estates with long views back across the hills - Peermade was a summer retreat of the Travancore rulers and there are colonial-era bungalows and estate churches scattered through it. It is considerably quieter than Munnar and gets a fraction of the visitors. Visit as a half day drive from Thekkady, or as a stop if you are continuing to Munnar, which is the most common onward leg from here and takes around four hours through some of the better hill scenery in Kerala.

Urbania Packages for the Bangalore to Thekkady Route

Corporate Package

The resorts around Kumily, Vandiperiyar and Peermade have become one of the standard offsite destinations for Bangalore companies, and a 17 seater covers a full team without the convoy problem. The package includes GST invoicing, a Proforma Invoice for PO-based approval, a named driver for the full multi-day trip and consolidated monthly billing for registered accounts. The same corporate urbania rental bangalore stays with the team for the sanctuary transfers, the plantation visit and any Munnar extension, with duty slips signed daily and reconciled against the final invoice. Our corporate travels desk handles the arrangement end to end, including a second vehicle where the headcount runs past seventeen.

Family Package

The most common Urbania booking on this route by a distance. Three or four related families travelling together for four to six days, usually pairing Thekkady with Munnar and sometimes running on to Alleppey. The package is built around how families actually move rather than an idealised schedule: late starts on sanctuary days, the vehicle waiting with the air conditioning running during the boat cruise and the spice walk, and a driver comfortable with elders and small children on a ghat road. The walk-through cabin matters here more than anywhere, since grandparents are not climbing over anybody to reach a seat, and urbania for family trip bangalore bookings almost always take the 17 seater even at fourteen passengers, for the luggage room.

Luxury and Executive Package

The Urbania in its premium configuration, with the fullest specification we run: wider reclining seats with individual armrests, additional legroom through reduced seat count, ambient lighting, better cabin insulation and premium upholstery. On a ten hour drive that finishes with a mountain climb, that specification is functional rather than decorative. This tier suits senior management travel, milestone family occasions and resort weddings in the Thekkady and Munnar belt where guests need to arrive presentable after a long day. For very large celebrations we run it alongside our volvo bus rental bangalore coaches, with the Urbania carrying the immediate family and the coach handling the rest.

Our Force Urbania Fleet in Bangalore

Our Urbania fleet runs in 13 and 17 seater configurations, all air conditioned, all with push-back seating and a walk-through cabin. We operate the full range of group vehicles from the same Bangalore base, so if your headcount shifts after booking, which it routinely does on family trips, we can usually move you across categories without restarting the process.

•      Force Urbania — 13 to 17 seater luxury van, the vehicle this page covers

•      Tempo traveller — 8 to 18 seater, the value alternative on the same corridor

•      Mini bus — 12 to 24 seater, AC and non-AC, for groups past seventeen

•      Bus — 27 to 50 seater, including Volvo and Benz coaches for large movements

•      Cars — 4 to 7 seater, from Etios, Dzire, Innova and Commuter through Innova Crysta, Innova Hycross and Fortuner, up to Corolla Altis, Camry, Audi A6, Audi Q7, BMW 5 Series, BMW 7 Series, Mercedes-Benz E Class, Mercedes-Benz S Class and Rolls-Royce Ghost

Tejas Tours and Travels does not operate sleeper bus services. Every vehicle we run is seated configuration with push-back seats. On this route that is the right answer anyway, since we would not put a group through the Cumbum ghat section at night. Where a group prefers to split the journey, we plan a hotel halt at Dindigul or Madurai rather than driving through the dark.

Billing Details — What Is Included and What Is Extra

We quote in writing before you book and the quote itemises everything, so there are no surprises at trip end. A 20 percent advance of the total fare confirms your booking.

Included in the Quoted Fare

•      Base fare and fuel charges

•      Driver allowance

Not Included — Billed Separately at Actuals

•      Toll charges and parking fees

•      Interstate tax and permits for the Karnataka to Tamil Nadu and Tamil Nadu to Kerala crossings

•      Additional driver bata after 9:45 PM

•      GST as applicable

•      Final rental is calculated on total kilometres and hours from our garage to garage

The garage-to-garage basis is standard across the organised group transport industry in Bangalore. The meter starts when the vehicle leaves our garage for your pickup point and ends when it returns. We factor this into the written quote, so the number you approve is the number you pay.

Tejas Tours and Travels does not provide passenger insurance cover. Passengers are advised to arrange their own travel insurance if required. Vehicle insurance and full statutory driver and vehicle compliance are maintained across the fleet.

•      Bangalore to Coorg — 265 km, five to six hours. Coffee estates, Abbey Falls and Dubare. The single most booked Urbania weekend route.

•      Bangalore to Ooty — 270 km, six to seven hours. Through Mysore and Bandipur into the Nilgiris, with a ghat section that suits this vehicle well.

How to Book a Force Urbania for Rent in Bangalore — Step by Step

Booking an Urbania for hire in Bangalore with Tejas Travels takes under five minutes. Follow these four steps.

Step 1 — Contact Tejas Travels

•      Call or WhatsApp +91 9980277773, or email info@tejastravels.com. Available 24 hours, 7 days a week.

•      Share your travel date.

•      Share your Bangalore pickup location — area or landmark such as Whitefield, Electronic City, MG Road, Koramangala, the KIA airport, a hotel name or a tech park.

•      Share your destination or full itinerary.

•      Share your number of passengers so we can advise between the 13 and 17 seater.

•      For KIA airport pickups, share the flight number. The driver tracks live flight status and adjusts pickup timing for delayed flights automatically.

•      For corporate bookings from Bangalore tech parks, share your GST number and preferred invoicing format.

•      Mention the occasion — corporate offsite, wedding, VIP movement — so the team can allocate the best-condition vehicle and, where required, a chauffeur in formal attire.

•      For Thekkady and other multi-day outstation hire, share the full day-wise itinerary, including any Munnar or Alleppey extension, so we can allocate a driver with ghat and Kerala route experience.

Step 2 — Receive Your Written Quote

•      Within 2 hours of your enquiry, Tejas Travels sends a written quote via WhatsApp or email.

•      The quote itemises every charge:

◦       Urbania hire rate — per kilometre or flat local package

◦       Driver allowance — Rs 500 to Rs 1,000 per day depending on the trip

◦       Applicable toll estimates

◦       Interstate permits where applicable — Tamil Nadu and Kerala for Thekkady, Tamil Nadu for Ooty, Andhra Pradesh for Tirupati

◦       GST

•      No verbal-only prices. Everything is in writing before you confirm.

•      For corporate clients requiring reimbursements, a Proforma Invoice can be issued at this stage.

•      If you want to compare two vehicle classes, request both quotes at the same time.

Step 3 — Confirm Your Booking and Pay Advance

•      Once satisfied with the written quote, confirm via WhatsApp or phone.

•      A 20 percent advance payment of the total fare confirms the booking and holds the specific vehicle on your date.

•      Payment options: UPI (Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm), NEFT, IMPS or RTGS bank transfer, or credit and debit card via payment link.

•      Advance receipt issued within 30 minutes.

•      Your confirmation includes:

◦       Driver name and mobile number

◦       Vehicle registration number

◦       Departure time

◦       Pickup location confirmation

◦       Full billing breakdown — all sent to WhatsApp or email in writing

•      The Urbania fleet is limited and books out early on peak dates. Christmas and New Year, Onam, Diwali, the December to February Kerala season and the November to February wedding season all need advance planning.

Step 4 — Your Driver Arrives Early

•      Your assigned Tejas Travels driver arrives at the confirmed Bangalore pickup point 15 minutes before scheduled departure.

•      For KIA airport transfers, the driver coordinates at the Arrivals gate.

•      The vehicle is clean, sanitised, fuelled and ready.

•      For wedding and VIP bookings, the driver arrives in formal attire.

•      The driver calls you 30 minutes before arrival as a courtesy.

•      During the trip the driver handles all routing, toll payments, and the Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala permit checkpoints.

•      At trip end the balance is settled after deducting the advance.

•      Any additional kilometres or hours are billed at the pre-agreed rate.

Quick booking: WhatsApp +91 9980277773 with your passenger count, Bangalore pickup location, destination and travel date. Written Urbania quote in 2 hours.

•      UPI — Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, BHIM UPI and Amazon Pay. The fastest method, with instant confirmation on receipt. Recommended for all advance deposits.

•      Bank transfer — NEFT, IMPS and RTGS. For corporate clients and advances above Rs 5,000. IMPS is instant; NEFT can take up to 2 hours.

•      Credit and debit card — Visa, Mastercard and RuPay, via payment link sent to your registered mobile or email. Valid for both advance and full payment.

•      Net banking — All major Indian banks. Payment link via WhatsApp or email. Preferred for Bangalore IT corporate PO-based approvals.

•      Cash — Balance payable at the time of travel, accepted at trip end. The advance must be digital for booking confirmation. A receipt is issued.

•      Corporate credit — For registered corporate accounts, with 30-day credit terms for signed Bangalore corporate clients and monthly consolidated invoicing available.

A 20 percent advance confirms your booking and guarantees vehicle availability. For Thekkady, Munnar, Alleppey and other multi-day outstation hire during peak dates, a higher advance may be required given limited Urbania fleet availability.

Frequently Asked Questions — Bangalore to Thekkady Urbania

The bangalore to thekkady distance is approximately 515 kilometres via Hosur, Krishnagiri, Salem, Karur, Dindigul, Theni and Cumbum, which comes to ten to eleven hours including halts. The final twenty-five kilometres are a hairpin climb from the Cumbum valley to Kumily, so we plan a 4:30 AM departure to complete that section in daylight. Groups preferring a gentler pace break the journey at Dindigul or Madurai and arrive by late morning the next day.

Urbania fare starts around Rs 47,100. The final figure depends on vehicle class, number of days and total kilometres run. Since billing is garage to garage on actual kilometres and hours, we issue a written itemised quote within 2 hours rather than a verbal estimate.

A 20 percent advance of the total fare confirms your booking and holds the specific vehicle on your travel date. The advance must be paid digitally by UPI, bank transfer or card. A receipt is issued within 30 minutes and the balance is settled at trip end after deducting the advance. Because the Urbania fleet is small, peak-date bookings may require a higher advance.

The 13 seater suits ten to twelve passengers with full luggage for a Kerala trip of four or more days. The 17 seater suits fourteen to sixteen, and a good number of groups of twelve take it anyway for the extra luggage room and the empty row that lets people spread out on a ten hour drive. If your headcount is close to the limit, take the larger one. On this route the difference in fare is small against the difference in comfort, and we will advise honestly when you share your numbers.

Yes, two of them. The vehicle crosses from Karnataka into Tamil Nadu near Hosur and from Tamil Nadu into Kerala at Kumily, and each crossing requires a valid interstate permit. Both are billed at actuals rather than absorbed into the base rate, and we arrange all the documentation before departure so the group does nothing at the posts. Our drivers make these crossings routinely and the Kumily post is usually a few minutes with the paperwork in order.

This is where the vehicle is at its best. The monocoque construction gives it a lower centre of gravity and car-like handling, so the Lower Camp to Kumily climb is comfortable rather than an ordeal, and the narrow approach roads to Chellarkovil, Ramakkalmedu and the smaller spice estates are well within its range. Larger coaches manage the main ghat slowly and then cannot reach several of the viewpoints at all, which is the practical reason we recommend the Urbania over a bigger vehicle for groups of this size.

No. Tejas Tours and Travels does not operate sleeper bus services. Every vehicle we run is seated configuration with push-back seats. On this corridor we would not recommend overnight travel in any case, since the ghat section into Kumily should be driven in daylight. Where a group wants to split the journey, we plan a hotel halt at Dindigul or Madurai, which is both more comfortable and safer than continuous night driving.

Yes, and most bookings on this route work that way. The same vehicle and driver stay with you throughout, covering the sanctuary transfers, the spice plantation visit, Chellarkovil, Vandanmedu and Ramakkalmedu, and then the onward leg to Munnar, Alleppey or back through Madurai. Multi-day hire is billed on total kilometres and hours with a per-day minimum plus driver allowance. Share your day-wise itinerary at enquiry stage and we quote the whole trip as one number, which is how a munnar thekkady tour package from bangalore is normally structured.

Cancelling more than 72 hours before departure carries no charge and the full advance is refunded within 5 to 7 working days. Between 48 and 72 hours the charge is 10 percent of the total fare, between 24 and 48 hours it is 25 percent, and between 12 and 24 hours it is 50 percent. Multi-day outstation trips to Thekkady need a minimum 7-day notice for a full refund, and premium-configuration bookings need 5 days because the fleet is limited. Date changes and vehicle upgrades with more than 24 hours notice are accommodated at no penalty, subject to availability.

Tejas Tours and Travels does not provide passenger insurance cover. Passengers are advised to arrange their own travel insurance if they wish to be covered. All vehicles carry valid insurance and full statutory compliance, and every driver is verified with a commercial licence and route experience, but personal passenger cover is not part of the booking. To book, call or WhatsApp +91 9980277773 or email info@tejastravels.com with your travel date, Bangalore pickup location, passenger count and day-wise itinerary. A written itemised quote follows within 2 hours; confirm it, pay the 20 percent advance, and you receive driver details, vehicle registration and the full billing breakdown in writing. Our urbania van booking online and WhatsApp enquiry lines are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
