Places to Visit in Coonoor

Sims Park
A botanical garden of around twelve hectares laid out on a slope in the middle of the town in 1874, in a semi-natural style that follows the contours rather than flattening them, with more than a thousand plant species including a good collection of conifers, magnolias and tree ferns. The annual fruit and vegetable show held here in May is a genuine local event rather than a tourist one. Visit in the morning. It is the one attraction actually inside Coonoor rather than outside it, it takes around ninety minutes, and it is a considerably calmer proposition than the Ooty botanical gardens on a long weekend.

Bangalore
Departure Point
Your journey to Ooty begins from Bangalore, the gateway to South India's most beloved hill stations. Pick-up is available from any part of the city — Koramangala, Electronic City, Whitefield, Hebbal, Yeshwanthpur, Marathahalli, or Majestic. The most common route out of Bangalore takes you onto NH275, the six-lane Mysore Expressway, which is one of the smoothest and best-maintained national highways in Karnataka. An early departure between 5 AM and 6 AM is strongly advised to clear Bangalore city limits before peak traffic begins. The first 50 km on the expressway are fast, comfortable, and lightly trafficked in the early hours, setting a pleasant tone for the journey ahead. Our drivers are experienced in choosing the optimal departure window and route based on real-time traffic conditions, ensuring that the first stretch of your Bangalore to Ooty road trip is efficient, calm, and enjoyable from the very first kilometre.

Mysore
City of Palaces
The first three hours are the fastest of the day, on six-lane expressway. Our drivers reach the pickup point fifteen minutes early and aim to be on the expressway before 6:15 AM, because everything downstream - the Bandipur gate and the ghat in daylight - depends on time banked here. The towns are the most characterful on any road out of Bangalore. Ramanagara and its granite Sholay hills; Channapatna, where the lacquered toy lathes have turned for two centuries and where a twenty-minute stop is the most requested addition on family bookings; Maddur and its vada; Mandya and the sugarcane country the Cauvery canals created; and Srirangapatna on its island. Mysore is where most groups take breakfast, and it is the last major city before the forest - the choice of food thins considerably beyond it.

Gundlupet
Flower Town of Karnataka
South of Mysore the road narrows from expressway to good two-lane highway. Nanjangud, twenty-five kilometres out on the Kapila river, holds the very large Srikanteshwara temple and is called the Kashi of the South for the parallel with Varanasi - a forty-five minute stop for travellers with an interest. Gundlupet is the last Karnataka town of any size and genuinely worth slowing for. The fields around it are given over to marigold and sunflower cultivation, and in season the roadside turns solid gold and orange for kilometres. Practically it is the last proper fuel and food stop before Bandipur and the Tamil Nadu border, and our drivers treat it as the checkpoint where the day either is or is not on schedule for the gate.

Theppakadu
Mudumalai Gateway
The highway enters Bandipur National Park and runs nearly twenty kilometres through protected forest, part of the wider Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. Speed limits are enforced, stopping is not permitted, and elephant, gaur and spotted deer are seen from the road regularly - the sightings are often better than people expect. This stretch closes to all vehicles from 9:00 PM to 6:00 AM, and to two-wheelers from 6:00 PM. The Tamil Nadu border comes shortly after and the road enters Mudumalai. At Theppakadu, where the elephant camp sits on the Moyar river, the two ghat routes diverge - left for Masinagudi and the Kalhatti bends, straight on for Gudalur and Pykara. Our drivers will have decided before setting out which they are taking, based on the vehicle, the group and the light remaining.

Ooty
Gentle Road to the Nilgiris
The Gudalur ascent is the longer of the two climbs and the one buses take - a sustained but manageable gradient through forest that gives way to tea as the altitude increases. The temperature drops steadily and the vegetation changes visibly over the space of half an hour, from sal and teak to eucalyptus, wattle and finally the terraced tea that defines the plateau. Near the top the road passes Pykara, where the falls and the lake sit a short distance off the highway - the lake has boating and the falls are at their best from July through December. It is a worthwhile twenty-minute stop and it is on the road rather than off it. Beyond Pykara the plateau opens out and Ooty follows, busy and built-up in a way that surprises first-time visitors expecting a quiet hill station.

Coonoor
Tea Town of the Nilgiris
The last twenty kilometres run southeast and downhill from Ooty, dropping around four hundred metres, with the Nilgiri Mountain Railway running alongside the road for much of the way - if the timing is right you will pass the train, which most passengers find is the highlight of the drive. Wellington comes first, a cantonment town holding the Madras Regimental Centre and the Defence Services Staff College, with the ordered character that cantonments have everywhere. Coonoor follows, lower and warmer than Ooty and noticeably less crowded, laid out on slopes with tea estates running right to the edge of the town. Our driver takes you to the confirmed address and assists with luggage. Note that many estate bungalows and homestays around Coonoor sit on narrow, steep, unsurfaced approach lanes, so send us the property name at booking and we will confirm what can reach the door. A 5:30 AM departure with a proper Mysore halt puts most groups in Coonoor between 1:00 PM and 2:30 PM.

Urbania Packages for Every Group
Every quotation is built around what the group actually needs rather than picked off a fixed menu. The tiers below describe how we normally structure bangalore to coonoor urbania enquiries on this corridor.
Family Urbania Package
The dominant booking here — extended families taking two or three nights in the Nilgiris, usually staying in Coonoor precisely because Ooty is crowded. The 12 and 13 seater are the usual choice, and on this route that size has a second advantage beyond cost: it reaches more properties on the steep estate lanes. We plan these journeys around two fixed points rather than around distance: clearing the Bandipur gate in daylight, and taking the Gudalur ascent, which is gentler for anyone prone to travel sickness and mandatory for the larger vehicles anyway. A Channapatna toy stop on the outbound leg costs twenty minutes and is the most requested addition. Child seats can be arranged with notice. Our 13 seater urbania rent bangalore configuration is the most requested size here.
Weekend and Three-Night Urbania Package
Coonoor works well as a long weekend, and the vehicle staying with your group matters more here than on most routes — the viewpoints, the falls, the tea factories and Ooty itself are spread across the plateau, local transport is thin, and the roads are narrow enough that you will not want to negotiate them repeatedly by auto. A three-night stay allows Coonoor properly, a day up in Ooty, and the toy train, which needs booking well ahead and considerably further ahead for a group of fifteen. We build the itinerary around the train timing if you have tickets, since the schedule is fixed and everything else can move around it. Weekend quotes carry a stated allowance for plateau running, which on three nights runs well over two hundred kilometres.
Corporate Offsite Urbania Package
The Nilgiris are a common offsite destination and the estate properties around Coonoor suit small team stays well — quiet, self-contained and a genuine change of scene without the crowds Ooty draws. Documentation is handled up front: GST invoicing, a Proforma Invoice at quotation stage for purchase-order approval, monthly consolidated billing and thirty-day credit terms for signed accounts. Two planning points we raise with every corporate booking on this route: the Bandipur gate governs departure and return timings absolutely, and for teams above seventeen we run two Urbanias rather than one coach, since the estate approach lanes and the plateau roads both favour smaller vehicles. Our corporate travels bangalore desk handles standing accounts.
Luxury and VIP Urbania Package
For senior family groups, guest hosting and travellers who want the ghat to be comfortable rather than merely survived. This tier draws on the 15, 16 and 17 seater end of the fleet with the full recliner and dual-zone specification, a chauffeur in formal attire where the occasion calls for it, and vehicle allocation confirmed by registration number rather than by class. On this route the value is specific: a sustained climb into the Nilgiris at the end of a seven-hour day is noticeably easier in a vehicle with better suspension, and for anyone prone to travel sickness on hill roads that is functional rather than cosmetic. See the luxury urbania rental bangalore fleet and the 16 seater urbania configuration. Send the property name so we can confirm the approach lane takes the larger body.
Fare Inclusions, Exclusions and Advance Payment
Every Tejas Tours and Travels quotation for the Bangalore to Coonoor Urbania corridor is issued in writing with the structure below. Nothing outside this list is charged, and everything inside it is stated before you confirm.
Advance payment: 20 percent of the total fare is payable in advance to confirm the booking.
Included in the Quoted Fare
• Base fare and fuel charges
• Driver allowance
Not Included in the Quoted Fare
• Toll and parking charges
• Interstate tax
• Driver bata after 9:45 PM, charged extra
• Final rental is calculated on total kilometres and hours from our garage to garage
• GST
Insurance note: Tejas Tours and Travels does not cover passenger insurance. Passengers are advised to arrange their own travel cover where required. Our vehicles carry the statutory motor insurance required under law and our drivers hold valid commercial licences.
Three points are specific to this route. First, the Tamil Nadu interstate permit applies since the road crosses the border at Bandipur, and it is quoted as a separate line at actual and arranged in advance. It scales with seating capacity, so a 17 seater carries a higher permit line than a 13 seater and we will show you both figures. Second, toy train tickets, garden and viewpoint entry fees and tea factory tour charges are paid on site and sit outside the vehicle fare. Third, local running on the plateau adds up more than people expect — the viewpoints, the falls, Ooty and the tea factories are spread across a wide area, and a proper three-night itinerary will run well over two hundred kilometres of local driving, so our weekend package quotes carry a stated allowance for it rather than a bare point-to-point figure that overruns at settlement.

Booking a Force Urbania for hire in Bangalore with Tejas Travels takes under 5 minutes. Follow these 4 steps.
Step 1 — Contact Tejas Travels
• Call or WhatsApp +91 9980277773, or email info@tejastravels.com — available 24 hours, 7 days a week.

◦ Travel date
◦ Bangalore pickup location — area or landmark such as Whitefield, Electronic City, MG Road, Koramangala, KIA airport, a hotel name or a tech park
◦ Destination or your full itinerary
◦ Number of passengers
◦ Preferred vehicle
• For KIA airport pickups, share the flight number. The driver tracks live flight status and adjusts pickup timing for delayed flights automatically.
• For luxury vehicles such as Audi, BMW, Mercedes or Rolls-Royce, also mention the occasion — corporate, wedding or VIP event — so the team can ensure the best-condition vehicle and, where required, formal chauffeur attire.
• On this route, send us your Coonoor property name. Many estate and homestay approach lanes are narrow, steep and unsurfaced, and we confirm what vehicle size can reach the door before you book.
Step 2 — Receive Your Written Quote
• Within 2 hours of your enquiry, Tejas Travels sends a written quote via WhatsApp or email.
• The quote clearly itemizes every charge:
◦ Vehicle hire rate — Rs/km or flat package
◦ Driver allowance — Rs 400 to 1,000 per day depending on vehicle class
◦ Applicable toll estimates
◦ Any interstate permit if applicable — Tamil Nadu for this route, Kerala for Wayanad, Andhra Pradesh for Tirupati

• No verbal-only prices. Everything is in writing before you confirm.
• For corporate clients requiring reimbursements, a Proforma Invoice can be issued at this stage.
• If you want to compare two vehicle classes, request both quotes at the same time — worth doing here, since the Tamil Nadu permit scales with seating capacity.
Step 3 — Confirm Your Booking and Pay Advance
• Once satisfied with the written quote, confirm via WhatsApp or phone.
• A 20 percent advance payment confirms the booking.
• Payment options: UPI (Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm), NEFT/IMPS/RTGS bank transfer, or credit/debit card via payment link.

◦ Vehicle registration
◦ Departure time

What Our Customers Say About Our Urbania Services in Bangalore
Why Choose Tejas Tours and Travels?
Frequently Asked Questions — Bangalore to Coonoor Urbania
The bangalore to coonoor distance is around 290 km via Mysore, Gundlupet, Bandipur and Gudalur to Ooty, then twenty kilometres down to Coonoor. The shorter Masinagudi and Kalhatti line runs closer to 275 km but is not available to large vehicles, and the long way round through Coimbatore and Mettupalayam is roughly 400 km. An Urbania takes 7 to 8 hours with one proper halt — fast expressway to Mysore, then progressively slower through the forest and up the ghat.
Gudalur, and it is not a preference. The Masinagudi and Kalhatti alternative has thirty-six very steep hairpin bends and is not permitted for buses and heavy vehicles, so it is closed to our larger Urbanias by rule rather than by our choice. That is no loss: Gudalur is longer but gentler, has a better surface, and is the route buses take. It is also kinder to anyone in the group prone to travel sickness. For smaller vehicles with experienced drivers we will use Kalhatti where a group actively wants it, but never at dusk and never on a schedule that has already slipped.
Part of it. The highway through Bandipur National Park is closed to all vehicles from 9:00 PM to 6:00 AM, and to two-wheelers from 6:00 PM, a restriction imposed after repeated wildlife deaths on the road. There is no discretion at the gate — arrive at 9:15 PM and you wait until 6:00 AM. Our drivers plan the day around the timings and will restructure the itinerary rather than gamble on reaching it, or route the long way via Coimbatore and Mettupalayam where a late departure makes the gate unreachable.
That depends on the property, and on this route it is the single most useful question to ask us before booking. A great many Coonoor estate bungalows and homestays sit on narrow, steep, unsurfaced approach lanes off the plateau roads. A 12 or 13 seater will usually manage; a 16 or 17 seater sometimes will not, and the alternative is walking uphill with luggage in the cold. Send us the property name at the enquiry stage and we confirm what can reach the door before you commit to a vehicle size, rather than either of us discovering it on arrival.
Bus fares around Rs 23,900. The final figure depends on vehicle class, number of days and total kilometres run. Since billing is garage to garage on actual kilometres and hours, we issue a written itemised quote within 2 hours rather than a verbal estimate.
More than most groups expect. The viewpoints, the falls, the tea factories, Wellington and Ooty itself are spread right across the plateau, local transport is thin, and the roads are narrow enough that nobody wants to negotiate them repeatedly by auto — so the vehicle stays with your group throughout. A proper three-night itinerary runs well over two hundred kilometres of local driving on top of the 580 km return. We build that into weekend quotes rather than letting it surface at settlement.
Our Urbania fleet runs from 8 up to 17 seats, and as a working rule you should book one seat more than your headcount. Groups of eight to ten take the 9 or 10 seater, eleven to thirteen the 13 seater, and fourteen to seventeen the 15, 16 or 17 seater. Above seventeen we generally run two Urbanias rather than one coach on this route, since the plateau roads and estate approach lanes both favour smaller vehicles. We do not operate a sleeper bus service. For overnight travel on this corridor we recommend a daytime run with a Mysore halt instead, which also solves the Bandipur gate problem.
Coonoor, for most groups. It is twenty kilometres below Ooty, four hundred metres lower and therefore slightly warmer, and it is a working tea town rather than a resort — the crowds that fill Ooty on a long weekend largely do not come down. Ooty has more attractions, more hotels and the botanical gardens, and it is easy to visit from Coonoor for a day. The usual pattern we book is three nights in Coonoor with a day trip up. If your group specifically wants the Ooty lake and gardens and the busier atmosphere, stay there instead and we will plan accordingly.
Yes, and you should. The line is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the Mettupalayam to Coonoor section is the only rack railway in India — a steam-hauled climb using rack and pinion to manage gradients no ordinary locomotive could take. Booking is essential and it sells out well ahead, particularly in season, and for a group of fifteen you need to book considerably earlier than a couple would. Many travellers do the shorter Coonoor to Ooty leg instead. If you have tickets, tell us the timing and we build the day around it, since the train schedule is fixed and everything else can move.
To the main road, yes. Down the final approach track, no — it is rough enough that we will not take a loaded Urbania onto it, and we say so at the quotation stage rather than turning back in front of your group. We park at the main road and you walk the last stretch. Laws Falls, closer to Coonoor on the Mettupalayam road, is the easier of the two and has parking that suits a large vehicle. Both are worth visiting between July and December when there is genuine water, and both reduce considerably by March.
Yes, the road crosses into Tamil Nadu at Bandipur and an interstate permit is required for a commercial vehicle. We arrange it in advance and quote it as a separate line at actual rather than folding it into the base fare. It scales with seating capacity, so a 17 seater carries a higher permit line than a 13 seater and we show both figures. On payment, a 20 percent advance on the total fare confirms your booking and holds the specific vehicle for your date, with the receipt issued within 30 minutes. For the April and May peak and for long weekends, a higher advance may be requested and vehicles should be booked well ahead.
Included: base fare, fuel charges and driver allowance. Not included: toll and parking, interstate tax, driver bata after 9:45 PM, and GST. Toy train tickets, garden and viewpoint entry fees and tea factory tour charges are paid on site. The final rental is calculated on total kilometres and hours from our garage to garage, and plateau running is part of that total. Tejas Tours and Travels does not cover passenger insurance, so passengers wanting personal travel cover should arrange it independently. On timing: October to May, with April and May the peak when Ooty fills completely — which is exactly when Coonoor is worth choosing instead. October to February is cooler and clearer, with the best visibility from Dolphins Nose and Lambs Rock early in the morning. The southwest monsoon from June brings heavy rain and persistent mist on the ghats, though the falls are at their best from July onward.
