Punnathur Kotta Elephant Camp
About four kilometres from the temple, punnathur kotta is an old palace ground that now houses the elephants offered to Guruvayur by devotees over the years. The elephants take part in temple processions, and the annual Anayottam, the elephant race that opens the Utsavam, is one of the most spirited events in the Guruvayur calendar. Visit early, follow the mahouts' instructions and keep a safe distance.
Mammiyur Mahadeva Temple
Just a short walk north-west of the main temple, this Shiva shrine is traditionally visited immediately after Guruvayur darshan; many devotees believe the pilgrimage is incomplete without it. The temple also has shrines to Vishnu and Parvati, and it is noticeably quieter than the main temple, which makes it a pleasant place for elders to sit for a while.
Parthasarathy Temple
Close to the main temple, this shrine depicts Krishna as Parthasarathy, the charioteer of Arjuna delivering the Bhagavad Gita on the battlefield of Kurukshetra. The image of Krishna holding the reins of the chariot is rare in Kerala, and the temple's traditional architecture and calm courtyards make it an easy addition to the morning temple circuit.
Institute of Mural Painting
Run by the Guruvayur Devaswom near the East Nada, this institute trains students in the Kerala mural tradition, the rich, natural-pigment style seen on the walls of the state's old temples and palaces. Visitors can often see students at work on large panels depicting episodes from the Krishna legends. It is a rewarding half hour for anyone interested in art, and small mural works are sometimes available to buy.
Chavakkad Beach and Blangad Beach
About five kilometres west of the temple, Chavakkad is where the Guruvayur crowds give way to a wide, open coastline. The beach is at its best in the evening, when fishing boats come in and the sunset lights up the sea. Neighbouring Blangad Beach is quieter still. Swimming is not advisable because of strong currents, but a walk along the shore is a good way to end a day of temple visits.
Palayur Church
Around five kilometres away, the Palayur St Thomas Church is believed to have been founded by St Thomas the Apostle in 52 AD, making it one of the earliest Christian sites in India. The church grounds include the tank where the saint is said to have baptised the first converts, and the annual feast draws large numbers of pilgrims. It is a peaceful and historically significant stop just outside the temple town.
Thriprayar Sree Rama Temple
About 22 kilometres south of Guruvayur on the banks of the Theevra river, Thriprayar is one of the four temples of the Nalambalam pilgrimage dedicated to Rama and his brothers, especially popular during the Malayalam month of Karkidakam in July and August. The idol is believed to have been worshipped by Krishna himself. The fish in the temple river, fed by devotees as an offering, are a charming sight.
Vadakkunnathan Temple, Thrissur
Twenty-eight kilometres away in the centre of Thrissur, the Vadakkunnathan Temple is a classic example of Kerala temple architecture, with massive gateways, a sprawling walled compound and fine wooden carvings. Its conservation work received a UNESCO Asia-Pacific heritage award in 2015. The temple grounds host the famous Thrissur Pooram every April or May, when caparisoned elephants and percussion ensembles fill the town.

Salem, the Steel City of Tamil Nadu, is the largest town on the first half of the route, home to the Salem Steel Plant and ringed by the Shevaroy Hills, with the hill station of Yercaud a short climb away. Both routes pass through Tamil Nadu before entering Kerala, so permits for both states are required. We arrange them before departure, and the interstate tax is billed at actuals rather than built into the per-kilometre rate.
Men must wear a mundu or dhoti and remove their shirts before entering; women can wear a saree, a skirt and blouse, or a salwar and churidar. Suitable clothing is available in shops around the temple. Entry to the inner temple is restricted to Hindus.
The temple is open throughout the year. October to February is the most comfortable weather-wise. Guruvayur Ekadasi in November or December and the Ulsavam in February or March are the most auspicious times but bring very large crowds, as do the main wedding muhurtham dates. The monsoon from June to August is quieter, though travel through the ghats is slower.
We do not recommend it. The primary route is closed at night through the forests, and Tejas Tours and Travels does not operate sleeper buses; all our vehicles are seated configurations with push-back seats. A daytime journey with proper halts is safer and far more comfortable for elderly passengers and children.
