Vembanad Lake and Houseboat Cruises
Vembanad is the longest lake in India and the largest in Kerala, and Kumarakom sits right on its eastern edge. A day or overnight cruise on a kumarakom houseboat is the reason many people make this trip. The converted kettuvallam rice barges drift past fishing villages, toddy shops and paddy polders while a cook prepares Kerala meals on board. Evening cruises are the most beautiful, as the light softens over the water and the lake goes quiet.

Departure Point
Your journey to Ooty begins from Bangalore, the gateway to South India's most beloved hill stations. Pick-up is available from any part of the city — Koramangala, Electronic City, Whitefield, Hebbal, Yeshwanthpur, Marathahalli, or Majestic. The most common route out of Bangalore takes you onto NH275, the six-lane Mysore Expressway, which is one of the smoothest and best-maintained national highways in Karnataka. An early departure between 5 AM and 6 AM is strongly advised to clear Bangalore city limits before peak traffic begins. The first 50 km on the expressway are fast, comfortable, and lightly trafficked in the early hours, setting a pleasant tone for the journey ahead. Our drivers are experienced in choosing the optimal departure window and route based on real-time traffic conditions, ensuring that the first stretch of your Bangalore to Ooty road trip is efficient, calm, and enjoyable from the very first kilometre.

Little England
The first leg runs down Hosur Road past Electronic City and over the Attibele check post into Tamil Nadu. Leaving before 6:00 AM saves up to an hour on this stretch alone, which is why we recommend an early start. Hosur earned its nickname from the cool, pleasant climate that British officers enjoyed here, and today it is a major automobile and electronics manufacturing town. The Karnataka to Tamil Nadu permit is checked here, and your driver handles the paperwork in a few minutes. Most travellers are still half asleep at this point, so a quick tea stop past the check post is common before the car picks up speed on the open highway.

Steel City of Tamil Nadu
This fast four-lane stretch passes Dharmapuri, the turnoff for Hogenakkal Falls, before reaching Salem, a large city ringed by the Shevaroy Hills with the hill station of Yercaud perched above. Salem is known for its steel plant, its sago and silk industries, and some of the best mangoes in the state. Your driver will take the bypass and join NH544 toward Coimbatore without entering the congested city centre. You should pass Salem by around 8:30 AM.

Manchester of South India
Past Avinashi and its ancient Avinashilingeswarar temple, with the knitwear hub of Tiruppur a short distance south, the road reaches Coimbatore. The city earned its nickname from its textile mills and remains a major industrial centre, known too for its pleasant weather and its wet grinders and pump sets. It has the best choice of restaurants on the route, so it is the natural lunch halt, usually around 11:30 AM. The Western Ghats come into view here for the first time.

Granary of Kerala
Leaving Coimbatore, the highway reaches the Walayar check post on the Kerala border, where the Tamil Nadu to Kerala permit is verified. Traffic can queue here, so patience helps. Beyond it lies the Palakkad Gap, a 30 kilometre wide break in the Western Ghats that lets the monsoon winds and the highway through. The landscape turns abruptly greener, with paddy fields and palm trees on both sides. Palakkad Fort, rebuilt by Hyder Ali in the 18th century, sits in the middle of town.

Cultural Capital of Kerala
The road climbs gently through Vadakkanchery and passes through the Kuthiran twin tunnel, Kerala's first road tunnel, which removed one of the worst bottlenecks on this route. Thrissur is built around the Vadakkunnathan Temple and its grand open ground, the Thekkinkadu Maidan, which hosts the famous Thrissur Pooram festival every April or May with caparisoned elephants and percussion ensembles. A tea break here, with banana chips from a local bakery, is a Kerala tradition.

Queen of the Arabian Sea
The highway passes Chalakudy, the turnoff for Athirappilly Falls, then Angamaly and Aluva near the airport, before reaching the Vyttila hub on the edge of Kochi. Kochi is Kerala's commercial capital and historic port, famous for Fort Kochi, the Chinese fishing nets and the Jew Town spice market. On the drive in, your driver will avoid the city centre and take the Thrippunithura road south toward Vaikom. This stretch is the busiest in Kerala, so late afternoon traffic can add thirty minutes.
Temple Town and home of the Vaikom Satyagraha
The road narrows into a quieter state highway lined with coconut palms, canals and small villages. Vaikom sits on the edge of Vembanad Lake and is known both for the ancient Vaikom Mahadeva Temple and for its place in India's social reform history. If you arrive before evening, a short temple visit here is well worth the stop.

Kerala's backwater village on Vembanad Lake
The last leg winds south along the eastern lake shore through paddy polders and narrow canal bridges, with Kottayam, the "Land of Letters, Latex and Lakes", about 14 kilometres to the east. Kottayam earned that name for its early printing presses, its rubber plantations and the backwaters around it. Your driver takes you directly to your resort, homestay or houseboat jetty, usually by around 5:00 PM on a 5:00 AM departure.

Our most popular plan for this route: five days with an overnight halt at Coimbatore, two nights in Kumarakom including a houseboat cruise, the bird sanctuary at dawn, Pathiramanal Island and a village experience, then the return drive. The same Urbania and driver stay with you throughout, and we can extend the trip to Alappuzha or Munnar on request.
Kumarakom's lakeside resorts are among the most sought-after offsite venues in South India. The package includes GST invoicing, a Proforma Invoice for PO approval, a named driver for the full trip and signed daily duty slips, with airport pickups at Kochi available for team members flying in. Our corporate travels bangalore desk manages consolidated billing for registered accounts.
The best-condition vehicle in the fleet, a senior chauffeur in formal attire and a flexible itinerary built around premium lakeside resorts and private houseboats. Our luxury urbania rental bangalore option suits milestone celebrations and visiting guests, and can be combined with Kochi sightseeing or a stay in Munnar.
Kumarakom is a favourite for destination weddings, anniversaries and family celebrations. We move wedding parties and guests between hotels, venues and jetties, and coordinate with our wedding car rental bangalore service for couples who want a decorated car for the ceremony. Longer Kerala circuits can be planned through our outstation vehicle booking desk.
We run a full range of group vehicles from the same Bangalore base, so if your group size changes after booking we can usually move you into the right vehicle without restarting the process.

Tejas Tours and Travels does not operate sleeper bus services. All our vehicles are seated configuration, which is why we plan the Kumarakom trip with an overnight hotel halt at Coimbatore or Thrissur rather than a continuous overnight drive.

• Base fare and fuel charges

• Toll charges and parking fees
• Inter state tax for the Tamil Nadu and Kerala crossings

Garage-to-garage billing means the meter starts when the Urbania leaves our garage for your pickup point and ends when it returns. Houseboat charges are paid directly to the houseboat operator and are not part of the vehicle fare. Tejas Tours and Travels does not cover passenger insurance, so passengers who want personal cover should arrange their own travel insurance. The bangalore to kumarakom distance is approximately 580 to 610 kilometres via Salem, Coimbatore, Palakkad, Thrissur and Vaikom. Driving time is 11 to 12 hours 30 minutes, so we recommend an overnight halt at Coimbatore or Thrissur and arriving at Kumarakom on the second day.
Pricing starts from around Rs 40 per kilometre for a 13 seater Force Urbania and depends on the seating variant and the number of days. The fare includes base fare, fuel and driver allowance. Toll, parking, inter state tax for Tamil Nadu and Kerala, driver bata after 9:45 PM and GST are extra, and the final rental is based on total kilometres and hours from our garage to garage. You receive an itemised written quote within 2 hours.
Five days is a comfortable minimum: one and a half days to drive down, two days in Kumarakom including a houseboat cruise, and the return journey. Seven days lets you add Alappuzha, Kochi or Munnar and travel at a relaxed pace.
Yes. The driver parks the Urbania near the jetty or at your resort while you cruise, then picks the group up when the houseboat docks. Houseboat bookings are made separately with the operator, and we can suggest reliable options when you share your itinerary.
The Coimbatore and Palakkad route on NH544 is faster, smoother and open at all hours, so it is our standard choice. The Mysore and Wayanad route is scenic, but the Bandipur forest stretch is closed to traffic at night, so it only works with a daytime crossing. We recommend the best route based on your dates and plans.
Yes. The route passes through Tamil Nadu into Kerala, so both permits are required. They are checked at the Attibele and Walayar borders, and the cost is billed separately as inter state tax. Our team arranges all paperwork before departure.
September to March is the best season, with pleasant weather, calm backwaters and migratory birds at the sanctuary from November to February. The monsoon from June to August is lush and romantic but brings heavy rain, while April and May are hot and humid.
Our Urbania fleet covers 13 to 17 seater configurations. For a long Kerala trip with luggage, choose one size above your headcount. For eight to twelve people a tempo traveller is more economical; above seventeen, a mini bus or bus fits better.
A 20 percent advance of the total fare confirms the booking. Cancelling more than 72 hours before departure carries no charge and the advance is refunded in 5 to 7 working days. Charges then rise from 10 percent to 75 percent of the fare as departure gets closer, and a no-show is charged in full. Tejas Tours and Travels does not cover passenger insurance and does not operate sleeper buses.
Call or WhatsApp +91 9980277773, or email info@tejastravels.com, with your travel date, Bangalore pickup point, group size and day-wise itinerary. You receive a written quote within 2 hours. Confirm it, pay the 20 percent advance and you get driver details, vehicle registration and the full billing breakdown in writing. Our force urbania hire line is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
