Hawa Beach
Separated from Lighthouse Beach by a rocky promontory, Hawa Beach is smaller and was once famous as Eve's Beach. It is popular for early morning walks, when fishermen haul in their nets, and for watching the sunset from the rocks. The waters here are usually gentler, making it good for a relaxed swim in season.
Samudra Beach
The northernmost of the three, Samudra Beach is quieter and home to several upmarket resorts. It is where you see the traditional fishing community at work, with catamarans and colourful boats pulled up on the sand. A good choice for travellers who want the Kovalam coastline without the crowds.
Vizhinjam Rock-Cut Cave Temple and Harbour
Vizhinjam, just south of Kovalam, was an important port of the ancient Ay kingdom. Its small rock-cut cave temple, dating to around the eighth century, holds a carved image of Vinadhara Dakshinamurthy and unfinished reliefs of Shiva and Parvati, and is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India. The busy fishing harbour nearby is lively in the mornings, and the area now also hosts the Vizhinjam International Seaport.
Aazhimala Shiva Temple
About 10 kilometres south, this clifftop temple overlooks the Arabian Sea and is known for its 58 foot Gangadhareshwara statue of Lord Shiva, one of the largest of its kind in Kerala. The setting on the rocks, with waves breaking below, makes it a striking stop, particularly in the late afternoon.
Kerala Arts and Crafts Village, Vellar
A short drive from Kovalam, this government-run craft village showcases Kerala's handicrafts, from coir and bamboo work to handlooms, bell metal, paintings and wood carving. Visitors can watch artisans at work in their studios and buy directly from them. It is an excellent rainy-day option and a good place for authentic souvenirs.
Poovar Island
Around 16 kilometres south, Poovar sits where the Neyyar river meets the Arabian Sea. Boat rides take you through mangrove-lined backwaters to a golden sand bar between the river and the sea, with floating cottages along the way. It offers a taste of Kerala's backwaters without travelling to Alleppey.
Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple
Sixteen kilometres north in Thiruvananthapuram, this is one of the most important Vishnu temples in India, with the deity shown reclining on the serpent Anantha. The temple follows a strict dress code: men must wear a dhoti without a shirt and women a saree or mundu, and entry is restricted to Hindus. The towering gopuram and the surrounding fort area are worth an unhurried visit.
Napier Museum and Thiruvananthapuram Zoo
Also in the capital, the Napier Museum is a nineteenth century building with a distinctive Kerala-inspired Indo-Saracenic design, housing bronzes, ivory carvings and temple chariots. It shares grounds with the zoo and the Sree Chitra Art Gallery, which holds works by Raja Ravi Varma. The complex is closed on Mondays, so plan accordingly.

The bangalore to kovalam distance is approximately 735 kilometres via Salem, Madurai, Tirunelveli and Nagercoil on NH44 and NH66. That is 14 to 16 hours of driving, which we always split across two days with an overnight halt at Madurai. The alternative route through Coimbatore, Kochi and Kollam is about 785 kilometres and works well as a scenic return journey.
We do not recommend it. A single-day run means 15 or more hours in the vehicle and arriving late at night, which is tiring for passengers and unsafe for the driver. Tejas Tours and Travels does not operate sleeper buses, so we plan an overnight halt at Madurai, which also gives the group time to visit the Meenakshi Amman temple.
Pricing starts from around Rs 30 per kilometre for a 12 seater AC mini bus and varies by seating capacity, AC or non-AC configuration and the number of days the vehicle stays with you. The quoted fare includes base fare, fuel charges and driver allowance. Toll and parking, interstate tax for Tamil Nadu and Kerala, driver bata after 9:45 PM and GST are extra, and the final rental is calculated on total kilometres and hours from our garage to garage. Every charge appears in the written quote you receive within 2 hours.
A 20 percent advance of the total fare confirms your booking and guarantees the specific mini bus on your date. The advance must be paid digitally by UPI, bank transfer or card, a receipt is issued within 30 minutes, and the balance is settled at trip end. For Christmas, New Year and the winter holiday season, book well in advance.
The route crosses from Karnataka into Tamil Nadu at Attibele and from Tamil Nadu into Kerala at Kaliyakkavilai, so permits for both states are required. We arrange all permits before departure and bill them at actuals as separate lines in your quote.
Allow at least six days: two days to drive down, two or three days in Kovalam and Thiruvananthapuram, and two days to drive back. Seven to eight days lets you add Kanyakumari, Varkala or the Alappuzha backwaters and Kochi on the return. The same mini bus and driver stay with you throughout.

Between 48 and 72 hours the charge is 10 percent of the total fare, between 24 and 48 hours 25 percent, between 12 and 24 hours 50 percent, and under 12 hours 75 percent. Multi-day outstation trips such as Kovalam need a minimum 7-day notice for a full refund. Tejas Tours and Travels does not provide passenger insurance cover, so passengers are advised to arrange their own travel insurance.
