Catherine Falls
Catherine falls drops around 76 metres in two stages and is one of the tallest waterfalls in the Nilgiris. It is named after the wife of M.D. Cockburn, who is credited with introducing coffee cultivation to this part of the hills. The upper part of the falls is reached by road near Aravenu, while the best full view is from Dolphin’s Nose on the Coonoor side. The flow is strongest after the monsoon.
Rangaswamy Peak and Pillar
Rangaswamy Peak is a sacred hill for the local Irula community, and the nearby Rangaswamy Pillar is a striking free-standing rock column rising from the forest. The area is quiet and scenic, and it is best viewed from the approach road. Access to the peak itself may be limited, so check locally before planning a walk.
Longwood Shola
Just outside town, Longwood Shola is a patch of native evergreen forest protected with the help of local residents. It shelters a wide variety of birds and plants, and guided walks introduce visitors to the shola ecosystem that once covered much of the Nilgiris. Entry is regulated by the forest department, so arrange permission in advance.
John Sullivan Memorial
The house built by John Sullivan at Kannerimukku, near Kotagiri, has been restored as a memorial and museum. It tells the story of how the British first settled the Nilgiris and also features exhibits on the Toda, Kota, Irula and Badaga communities. Elk Falls
A short drive from town, Elk Falls is a small, peaceful waterfall set among eucalyptus and tea. It sees far fewer visitors than the bigger falls, which makes it a pleasant spot for a relaxed hour and some photographs.

The quoted fare includes base fare, fuel and driver allowance. Toll, parking, interstate tax, any Nilgiris entry fees, driver bata after 9:45 PM and GST are extra, and final rental is based on total kilometres and hours from our garage to garage. Kotagiri is quieter, less commercial and greener than Ooty, with tea estates on every side and excellent viewpoints such as Kodanad. It is also the oldest hill station in the Nilgiris. Many groups stay in Kotagiri and visit Ooty and Coonoor on day trips, which gives them the best of both.
October to June is the best period. October to February is cool and clear, and March to June offers pleasant weather while the plains are hot, though this is also the busiest season. The monsoon from July to September brings heavy rain and mist, which can slow driving on the ghats.
