Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary and Lakkavalli Dam
Below the Kemmangundi hills lies the Bhadra Tiger Reserve, one of Karnataka’s better-protected forests, with gaur, elephants, leopards and a rich variety of birds. Mullayanagiri
At around 1,930 metres, Mullayanagiri is the highest peak in Karnataka. A road reaches close to the top, followed by a flight of steps to a small temple and panoramic views across the Western Ghats. It lies on the Chikmagalur side of the range and is often combined with Seethalayanagiri and Baba Budangiri on the same day.
Baba Budangiri
This peak is where, according to tradition, the Sufi saint Baba Budan planted the first coffee seeds in India in the seventeenth century, having brought them from Yemen. The shrine on the hill, the Shri Guru Dattatreya Bababudan Swamy Dargah, is revered by both Hindu and Muslim devotees. Manikyadhara Falls, a short distance away, is a popular stop on the same road.
Amruthapura Amriteshwara Temple and Ayyanakere
Near Tarikere, the Hoysala-era Amriteshwara Temple at Amruthapura, built in 1196, is known for its fine lathe-turned pillars and carved friezes. On the Chikmagalur side, Ayyanakere is one of the oldest man-made lakes in Karnataka, set against the Shakunagiri hill. Tiptur is famous for its copra market, one of the largest in the country, and the town is surrounded by some of the best coconut plantations in the state. Local shops sell fresh tender coconuts, coconut sweets and cold-pressed oil, which make good gifts. Nearby Aralaguppe has a small Hoysala temple for travellers with time to spare.
