Raja's Seat

Bhagamandala, on the way, is the confluence of the Kaveri, Kannike and the mythical Sujyoti, with a Kerala-style temple complex. Together they make a meaningful half-day trip.
Dubare Elephant Camp
On the banks of the Kaveri near Kushalnagar, Dubare lets visitors watch elephants being bathed and fed by their handlers in the morning. A river crossing is part of the experience. Arriving by nine in the morning gives the best chance of seeing the bathing session.
Namdroling Monastery (Golden Temple)
The largest teaching centre of the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism in the world, located at Bylakuppe. The main hall holds three giant gilded statues, and the painted interiors are striking. It lies directly on the route, which makes it an easy stop on the way in or out.
Kaveri Nisargadhama
A bamboo-covered river island near Kushalnagar reached by a hanging bridge. Tree-top walkways, deer enclosures and shaded river banks make it a relaxed family stop, especially after a long drive.

A few kilometres on, Kushalnagar is the commercial town at the edge of Coorg and the base for Dubare and Kaveri Nisargadhama.

This is where the drive changes character. Coffee estates shaded by silver oak line the road, pepper vines climb every trunk, and the air cools noticeably. Suntikoppa is a small plantation town, and the road climbs gently through curves to Madikeri, the district headquarters, set on a ridge at over a thousand metres.
