Raja's Seat
A garden viewpoint on the edge of Madikeri where the Kodava kings are said to have watched the sunset. On a clear evening the valley below fills with layers of hills and drifting mist, and the sunset view is the best in town. The musical fountain and small toy train make it popular with families.
Madikeri Fort
A stone fort in the heart of town, rebuilt in the late eighteenth century during Tipu Sultan's control and later used by the British. Inside sit a small museum, an old church and two life-size stone elephants. It is a short, informative stop that gives context to the region's history.
Omkareshwara Temple
Built in 1820, this Shiva temple blends Islamic-style domes and minarets with Kerala-style temple planning, set beside a tank filled with fish. It is a quiet, unusual structure and a good early-morning halt before heading to the falls.
Talakaveri and Bhagamandala
Around forty-five kilometres from Madikeri, Talakaveri is the source of the river Kaveri, high on the Brahmagiri hills, with sweeping views on a clear day. Bhagamandala, on the way, is the confluence of the Kaveri, Kannike and the mythical Sujyoti, with a Kerala-style temple complex. Together they make a meaningful half-day trip.
Dubare Elephant Camp
On the banks of the Kaveri near Kushalnagar, Dubare lets visitors watch elephants being bathed and fed by their handlers in the morning. A river crossing is part of the experience. Arriving by nine in the morning gives the best chance of seeing the bathing session.
Namdroling Monastery (Golden Temple)
The largest teaching centre of the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism in the world, located at Bylakuppe. The main hall holds three giant gilded statues, and the painted interiors are striking. It lies directly on the route, which makes it an easy stop on the way in or out.
Kaveri Nisargadhama
A bamboo-covered river island near Kushalnagar reached by a hanging bridge. Tree-top walkways, deer enclosures and shaded river banks make it a relaxed family stop, especially after a long drive.

Channapatna has made lacquered wooden toys for generations, using soft ivory wood and natural colours. The craft carries a geographical indication tag, and small workshops along the old road sell tops, rattles and dolls. Srirangapatna is an island town in the Kaveri and was the capital of Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan. The Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple, Daria Daulat Bagh summer palace, Tipu's Gumbaz and the ruined fort walls are all within a few kilometres. If you have an extra hour, it is one of the most rewarding history stops on the route.
Little Tibet of South India
Bylakuppe is home to one of the largest Tibetan settlements outside Tibet, with monasteries, prayer flags and momo cafes. The Namdroling Golden Temple is a short detour and well worth an hour. A few kilometres on, Kushalnagar is the commercial town at the edge of Coorg and the base for Dubare and Kaveri Nisargadhama.
Scotland of India
This is where the drive changes character. Coffee estates shaded by silver oak line the road, pepper vines climb every trunk, and the air cools noticeably. Suntikoppa is a small plantation town, and the road climbs gently through curves to Madikeri, the district headquarters, set on a ridge at over a thousand metres.
Crown Jewel of Coorg Waterfalls
The final stretch is a narrow, winding estate road that descends through thick plantation cover to the parking area. From there it is a short walk down steps to the viewing platform. The bangalore to abbey falls distance is about 270 kilometres via the Mysuru Expressway, Hunsur, Kushalnagar and Madikeri. By bus the journey takes 6 hours 30 minutes to 7 hours 30 minutes, including a breakfast halt.
Rates start from Rs 45 per km for a 29 to 33 seater AC bus, with larger, executive, Volvo and BharatBenz coaches priced higher. Outstation bus hire carries a minimum daily kilometre charge, and the final rental is calculated garage to garage. Tolls, parking, driver bata after 9:45 PM and GST are extra.
Yes, but the last stretch from Madikeri is narrow and parking is limited. Our drivers know the road, and for 45 to 50 seater coaches we plan timing and parking in advance to avoid peak-hour congestion.
