Veerabhadra Temple

The Hanging Pillar
Of the roughly seventy pillars in the temple, one does not fully rest on the floor. Visitors slide a thin cloth beneath its base and pull it out the other side, and it is easily the most photographed spot in Lepakshi. Local lore says a colonial-era engineer tried to find out how the roof was supported and shifted the pillar out of position. Whatever the true story, it shows how precisely the Vijayanagara builders worked with stone.
Natya Mandapa and the Ceiling Murals
The dance hall in front of the main shrine has pillars carved with celestial musicians, dancers and drummers, including Brahma on the drums. Look up and the ceilings hold some of the best-preserved Vijayanagara frescoes anywhere, painted in natural reds, ochres and blacks. The large ceiling painting of Veerabhadra is among the biggest single frescoes in India. Morning light shows the colours best, another good reason to leave Bangalore early.
Naga Linga and the Lepakshi Ganesha
In the courtyard behind the main shrine, a seven-hooded serpent coils over a Shiva linga, all carved from a single granite boulder. Local legend says the sculptors finished it while waiting for their mother to cook lunch. A few steps away, a large monolithic Ganesha rests against the same rock. The scale is hard to appreciate until you are standing beside them, and this is the favourite spot for group photographs.
The Unfinished Kalyana Mandapa
The wedding hall of Shiva and Parvati was never completed. Its carved pillars stand open to the sky, showing the gods and guests of the divine wedding. The story attached to it is one of Lepakshi's darkest: Virupanna is said to have been accused of spending royal funds on the temple without permission, and guides point to two reddish marks on a nearby wall linked to the legend. The hall is at its most atmospheric in late afternoon light.
Sita's Footprint
Near the Kalyana Mandapa, a large footprint is carved into the rock floor and holds water through most of the year. Devotees associate it with Sita, and some with Goddess Durga. It links Lepakshi to the Ramayana story that gives the village its name, and it is a quiet spot most visitors walk past too quickly.
Monolithic Nandi
A short distance from the temple, the giant Nandi faces the Naga Linga. Carved from a single granite rock, it is roughly 4.5 metres tall and over 8 metres long, and is regarded as one of the largest monolithic Nandi statues in India. The bells, chains and ornaments around its neck are sharply detailed, and the small garden around it makes a pleasant last stop before lunch.
Jatayu Theme Park
On a rock hillock near the Nandi, a large sculpture of the mythical bird Jatayu marks the site tied to the legend of Lepakshi's name. The walk up is short and gentle, manageable for most ages, and the top gives an open view over the village and the temple hill.
Penukonda Fort and Puttaparthi
With a free afternoon, two extensions work well. Penukonda, about 45 kilometres from Lepakshi, served as a later capital of the Vijayanagara Empire after the fall of Hampi, and its hill fort and Gagan Mahal palace connect naturally with the temple's history. Puttaparthi, roughly 75 kilometres away, is home to Prasanthi Nilayam, the ashram of Sri Sathya Sai Baba. The Nandi Hills turnoff appears on the left roughly 55 kilometres from the city, with Chikkaballapur town a few kilometres beyond. This district is the home of Sir M. Visvesvaraya, the engineer and statesman whose birthday India marks as Engineers' Day; his birthplace at Muddenahalli, near Nandi Hills, has a memorial museum. Nandi Hills itself is Bangalore's favourite sunrise point, with Tipu's Drop, old summer bungalows and the ninth-century Bhoga Nandeeshwara Temple at its base. Just outside Chikkaballapur, the 112-foot Adiyogi statue at the Isha centre has become a popular stop of its own. You cannot do all of these and Lepakshi in one relaxed morning, so choose one.
