Shivanasamudra Hydroelectric Power Station
Commissioned in 1902 under the Mysore state, the power station at Shivanasamudra was one of the first hydroelectric plants in Asia and supplied electricity to the Kolar Gold Fields and later to Bangalore, which became one of the first Indian cities with electric street lighting. The station is still in operation and its penstocks are visible from the approach road, a reminder of how much of Bangalore's early growth started here.
Madhyaranga Ranganathaswamy Temple
On the island between the two falls stands the Ranganathaswamy temple of Shivanasamudra, known as Madhyaranga. Together with Adi Ranga at Srirangapatna and Antya Ranga at Srirangam in Tamil Nadu, it forms a trio of revered Ranganatha shrines along the Kaveri. The temple is calm and well kept, a peaceful counterpoint to the noise of the falls.
Talakadu
About 30 kilometres away, Talakadu is a temple town half-buried in sand dunes on the Kaveri bank, the subject of a famous legend involving a curse by Queen Alamelamma. The Vaidyeshwara temple and several others have been partly excavated from the sand, and the river beach nearby is popular for a dip in the dry season. The Panchalinga Darshana festival, held once every twelve years or so, draws huge crowds.
Somanathapura Keshava Temple
Around 30 kilometres beyond Talakadu, the Chennakeshava temple at Somanathapura is one of the finest surviving examples of Hoysala architecture. Built in 1268, its star-shaped platform, triple shrines and densely carved outer walls, full of friezes of elephants, horsemen and scenes from the epics, reward slow attention.
