A small shrine set in the sand, Pataleshwara is known for a local belief that its linga appears to change colour through the day, reddish in the morning, darker at midday and pale in the evening. Whether you take it as fact or folklore, the shrine's setting, reached by steps down into a hollow in the dunes, gives a vivid sense of how deeply the temples were buried.
Maruleshwara and Arkeshwara Temples
Two more of the Panchalinga shrines, Maruleshwara and Arkeshwara, stand a short walk apart among the dunes and trees. They are simpler than Vaidyeshwara but equally venerated, and walking between them on the soft sand, with the Kaveri glinting through the trees, is one of the most memorable parts of the Talakadu experience. Wear footwear you can slip off easily, as the sand gets hot by late morning.
Mudukuthore Mallikarjuna Temple
The fifth Panchalinga, Mallikarjuna, stands on a hillock at Mudukuthore, a few kilometres from Talakadu on the far side of the river bend. The climb is short, and the view from the top across the Kaveri, the paddy fields and the Talakadu dunes is lovely at sunset. An annual jatre here draws large crowds, and devotees completing the Panchalinga circuit always include it.
Kaveri Riverbank and Coracle Rides
Below the temples, the Kaveri spreads wide and shallow over a sandy bed, and the riverbank at Talakadu is a popular spot for families to cool off after the temple walk. Local boatmen offer coracle rides in round bamboo boats. Stay in shallow areas close to the bank, because the current can be stronger than it looks and depth changes suddenly in places.
Somanathapura Chennakeshava Temple
Around 30 kilometres from Talakadu, the Chennakeshava temple at Somanathapura, built in 1268, is among the most perfectly preserved Hoysala temples anywhere. Its star-shaped platform, triple shrines and outer walls covered in friezes of elephants, horsemen and epic scenes are breathtaking in detail.
