Gommateshwara Bahubali Statue
The heart of Gommatagiri is the monolithic statue of Bahubali, the son of the first Tirthankara Rishabhanatha, who renounced a kingdom after winning it and meditated standing so long that creepers grew around his limbs. The statue, around 18 to 20 feet tall, shows these vines curling up his legs and arms, a detail that makes it instantly recognisable. It is a smaller but beautifully carved counterpart to the giant statue at Shravanabelagola. The site is managed as a Jain religious centre, so dress modestly and follow the rules at the shrine.

Departure Point
Your journey to Ooty begins from Bangalore, the gateway to South India's most beloved hill stations. Pick-up is available from any part of the city — Koramangala, Electronic City, Whitefield, Hebbal, Yeshwanthpur, Marathahalli, or Majestic. The most common route out of Bangalore takes you onto NH275, the six-lane Mysore Expressway, which is one of the smoothest and best-maintained national highways in Karnataka. An early departure between 5 AM and 6 AM is strongly advised to clear Bangalore city limits before peak traffic begins. The first 50 km on the expressway are fast, comfortable, and lightly trafficked in the early hours, setting a pleasant tone for the journey ahead. Our drivers are experienced in choosing the optimal departure window and route based on real-time traffic conditions, ensuring that the first stretch of your Bangalore to Ooty road trip is efficient, calm, and enjoyable from the very first kilometre.

Home of the Thatte Idli
The drive leaves Bangalore via Mysore Road and Kengeri and joins the Bangalore–Mysuru Expressway. Bidadi is the "Home of the Thatte Idli", the large, flat, soft idli served with chutney and butter that has become a favourite across the state. The town is also a growing industrial area with major automobile plants nearby. The expressway bypasses Bidadi, but a short service road detour leads to the popular idli stalls, making it an ideal early breakfast stop.

Silk City of Karnataka
Ramanagara is the "Silk City of Karnataka", home to one of the largest silk cocoon markets in Asia, where farmers bring cocoons for auction every day. Its rugged granite hills became famous as the location of the film Sholay, and the Ramadevara Betta vulture sanctuary lies among them. The expressway gives you good views of the rocky landscape as you pass.

Toy Town of Karnataka
Channapatna is the "Toy Town of Karnataka", known for its lacquered wooden toys and dolls, made from ivory wood and coloured with natural dyes. The craft carries a GI tag, and workshops and showrooms along the old highway sell toys, puzzles and décor. Many travellers stop here on the return journey to pick up gifts for children.

Home of the Maddur Vada
Maddur is the "Home of the Maddur Vada", a crisp fritter made with semolina, rice flour, onion and curry leaves. The dish is said to have been created at the town's railway station and is now enjoyed across Karnataka. Well-known eateries near the highway serve it hot, and it is a favourite snack stop for travellers.

Sugar City of Karnataka
Mandya is the "Sugar City of Karnataka", surrounded by sugarcane fields irrigated by the Kaveri and its canals. Sugar mills and jaggery units dot the district, and the countryside turns lush and green. The expressway skirts the town and keeps the drive quick.

Island Fortress of Tipu Sultan
Srirangapatna is the "Island Fortress of Tipu Sultan", formed by two branches of the Kaveri. It served as the capital of Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan, and its temple, palace and fort walls are just off the highway. Many visitors save it for the return drive, when a stop here fits naturally before heading back.

City of Palaces
Mysuru is the "Cultural Capital of Karnataka" and the "City of Palaces", known for its royal heritage, Dasara festival, silk sarees, sandalwood and Mysore Pak. Your driver uses the ring road to bypass the busy centre and join the Hunsur road. If you plan to see the palace or Chamundi Hills, your driver can fit them in before or after Gommatagiri.

Little Shravanabelagola of Mysuru
The final stretch brings you to the foot of Gommatagiri, the "Little Shravanabelagola of Mysuru", where the granite hill rises from the fields and the statue can be seen at the top. Your driver parks near the base while you climb. After the visit, you can head back to Mysuru for the palace and Chamundi Hills, or to KRS for the evening fountain show, before returning to Bangalore.

Distances are from central Bangalore on a 6:00 AM departure.
The drive heads out past Kengeri and joins the access-controlled Mysore expressway, one of the fastest roads in the state. Bidadi, the "Thatte Idli Town", is famous for its broad, soft plate idlis, and the eateries along the service road make it the obvious first breakfast option. Expressway tolls are billed at actuals.
Ramanagara, the "Silk City of Karnataka", runs one of Asia's biggest silk cocoon markets, and its rocky hills are known across India as the Sholay hills. Channapatna, the "Toy Town of Karnataka", follows, where artisans turn soft ivory wood into lacquered toys coloured with natural dyes. Its showrooms make a good souvenir stop on the drive home.
Maddur, the "Home of the Maddur Vada", is where the famous crisp onion fritter first found fame with rail travellers. Mandya, the "Sugar City of Karnataka", is surrounded by sugarcane fields and jaggery units fed by the Cauvery canals, and the fresh cane juice stalls are popular in summer.
Srirangapatna, the "Island Fortress of Tipu Sultan", sits within the arms of the Cauvery. The Ranganathaswamy Temple and fort walls lie just off the highway, and many groups stop here on the way back, when the day's pilgrimage is done.
The expressway ends near Mysore, the "City of Palaces", and the driver follows the ring road around the city to the Hunsur road, which avoids the central traffic entirely. Mysore is the best place on the route for lunch, from classic Mysore masala dosa to full vegetarian meals, which suits Jain groups well.
The Hunsur road runs west through Hinkal to Yelwal, a small town at the edge of the city's growth. An arch here marks the turn for Gommatagiri. The driver takes the right turn and heads north on a quieter village road towards the Bilikere side.
The final 12 kilometres pass farmland, coconut groves and granite outcrops, with the KRS backwaters appearing to the east. Gommatagiri, "The Little Shravanabelagola of Mysore", rises suddenly as a bare dome of rock. The Urbania parks at the base, and footwear is left there before the climb. Allow about an hour for the steps, the statue and the views, and carry water.

Urbania hire starts from Rs 50 per km, and the final urbania rent per km bangalore rate depends on the seating variant. The fare includes base fare, fuel and driver allowance. Toll, parking, driver bata after 9:45 PM and GST are extra, billed garage to garage.
A 20 percent advance of the total fare confirms your booking and holds the Urbania for your date.
The shrine is generally open from early morning to evening, but the courtyard gate is sometimes locked outside festival days and the caretaker lives nearby. The gommatagiri timings can vary, so a morning visit is the safest choice. There is usually no entry fee.
The annual head-anointing ceremony is usually held between September and November, when the statue is bathed in milk, turmeric, sandal and other offerings. Dates are announced each year, and we recommend booking early for that weekend.
The hillock is about 50 metres high, with steps cut into the rock. Most people manage it in 10 to 15 minutes. Footwear is left at the base, so the rock can be hot by midday; go early.
Yes. Gommatagiri in the morning, lunch in Mysore, then Mysore Palace or Brindavan Gardens in the evening is a comfortable bangalore to mysore one day trip, adding only a few kilometres.
Yes. Shravanabelagola is roughly 80 kilometres from Gommatagiri, and the two make a natural Jain pilgrimage circuit over a long day or two relaxed days.
