Talakadu
About 25 kilometres away on the Kaveri, Talakadu is a temple town where many ancient shrines lie partly buried under sand dunes, lending it an almost desert-like atmosphere by the river. According to legend, the sands are the result of a curse by Alamelamma, a queen who threw herself into the river. The Vaidyeshwara temple and the Keerthinarayana temple are the most visited. Talakadu is famous for the Panchalinga Darshana, a festival held at intervals of several years that draws huge crowds.
Mudukuthore Mallikarjuna Temple
Near Talakadu, a small hill rising above the Kaveri holds the Mallikarjunaswamy temple. A short climb leads to a sweeping view over the river, the sand dunes of Talakadu and the green paddy fields around them. It is especially lively during the annual jatre held here.
Tirumakudalu Narasipura
About 20 kilometres from Somanathapura, T. Narasipura is where the Kaveri meets the Kabini, with a third, mythical stream believed to join them, forming a sacred confluence often compared to the Triveni Sangama. The Gunja Narasimha Swamy temple and the Agastheshwara temple stand on the banks, and the town hosts the Kumbha Mela of the South every few years.
Shivanasamudra Falls
About 35 kilometres from Somanathapura, the Kaveri splits into two magnificent waterfalls, Gaganachukki and Bharachukki, as it drops off the Deccan plateau. Shivanasamudra is also home to one of the earliest hydroelectric power stations in Asia, commissioned in 1902, which once supplied power to the Kolar Gold Fields. The falls are at their fullest from July to October.
Srirangapatna
About 45 kilometres away, the island town of Srirangapatna was Tipu Sultan's capital. The Ranganathaswamy temple, Tipu's summer palace Daria Daulat Bagh, the Gumbaz mausoleum and the site where Tipu fell in 1799 make it a natural addition for history lovers on the way back via the expressway.
Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary
Near Srirangapatna, this sanctuary on a cluster of islets in the Kaveri is one of the most important bird nesting sites in Karnataka. Painted storks, spoonbills, egrets and river terns nest here in large numbers, and boat rides take you past basking crocodiles. It is at its best from December to June.
Mysore Palace and Chamundi Hills
Somanathapura is only about 35 kilometres from Mysore, so many families extend the trip to see the illuminated Mysore Palace on a Sunday evening, or climb to the Chamundeshwari temple on Chamundi Hills. This works best as an overnight trip or a long day with an early start.
