Canoe Cruise Through the Island Canals
The essential experience. A munroe island canoe tour takes you through canals so narrow that the palms almost meet overhead, and so low in places that you duck under the footbridges. Early morning, between 6:00 and 9:00 AM, brings the softest light, the calmest water and the most birdlife. Canoes can be arranged through homestays, local boatmen or the Kollam DTPC canal cruise.

Departure Point
Your journey to Ooty begins from Bangalore, the gateway to South India's most beloved hill stations. Pick-up is available from any part of the city — Koramangala, Electronic City, Whitefield, Hebbal, Yeshwanthpur, Marathahalli, or Majestic. The most common route out of Bangalore takes you onto NH275, the six-lane Mysore Expressway, which is one of the smoothest and best-maintained national highways in Karnataka. An early departure between 5 AM and 6 AM is strongly advised to clear Bangalore city limits before peak traffic begins. The first 50 km on the expressway are fast, comfortable, and lightly trafficked in the early hours, setting a pleasant tone for the journey ahead. Our drivers are experienced in choosing the optimal departure window and route based on real-time traffic conditions, ensuring that the first stretch of your Bangalore to Ooty road trip is efficient, calm, and enjoyable from the very first kilometre.

Little England of Tamil Nadu
The trip begins on Hosur Road past Silk Board and Electronic City, and the timing of this short stretch decides how the rest of the day unfolds. At dawn it is a clear forty-minute run; after 8:00 AM it becomes one of the busiest roads in the country. Crossing the Attibele check post, you enter Tamil Nadu and reach Hosur, the Little England of Tamil Nadu, a name earned in colonial times for its cool, pleasant climate. Today Hosur is a major industrial town with large automobile, two-wheeler and electronics plants, and it is also one of India's leading rose-growing centres, with greenhouses on the outskirts exporting cut flowers to Europe and the Middle East. The Tamil Nadu interstate permit is checked here, and our drivers carry it ready so the stop is brief. Many groups pause just after the town for a first tea and a quick snack before settling in for the long highway run. Elapsed time: about 50 minutes.

Steel City of Tamil Nadu
The road runs through granite hills and farmland past Dharmapuri, the turn-off for Hogenakkal Falls. Salem, the Steel City of Tamil Nadu, is named for the large government steel plant on its outskirts, and the region is also known for magnesite mining, sago production and silver anklets. The city sits in a bowl surrounded by the Shevaroy, Nagaramalai and Kanjamalai hills, and the hill station of Yercaud lies just above it. On a long-distance run your driver takes the Salem bypass, avoiding the city traffic entirely. At Salem the route leaves NH44 and swings west onto NH544 towards Erode and Coimbatore, which is the main corridor into Kerala. The large food plazas on the bypass make it a sensible mid-morning halt for a second coffee and a stretch. From here onward, the landscape starts to flatten and the Western Ghats begin to appear faintly on the western horizon. Elapsed time: about three hours thirty minutes.

Manchester of South India
Coimbatore is the Manchester of South India, a title it earned from its dozens of cotton textile mills in the early twentieth century. Today it is also a major engineering hub producing pumps, motors and wet grinders, and a growing centre for education and healthcare. Your driver will usually take the bypass towards the Kerala border rather than enter the city. If the group wants a lunch halt, Coimbatore has some of the best restaurants on the route, and the local Kongunadu cuisine, including arisi paruppu sadam and pepper chicken, is well worth trying. Groups with extra time sometimes detour to the Isha Yoga Centre and the giant Adiyogi statue at the foot of the Velliangiri hills, around 30 kilometres west of the city. Beyond Coimbatore, the Western Ghats rise dramatically on both sides as the road approaches the Palakkad Gap, the natural break in the mountains that has been the main gateway into Kerala for centuries. Elapsed time: about six hours thirty minutes.

Granary of Kerala
The Walayar check post marks the entry into Kerala, and the Kerala interstate permit is verified here. The change is immediate: the air turns greener and more humid, coconut palms crowd the roadside, and the signs switch to Malayalam. Palakkad, the Granary of Kerala, is the state's largest paddy-growing district, and between the harvest seasons its fields stretch in a vivid green sea to the foot of the Western Ghats. The town's eighteenth-century fort, built by Hyder Ali, stands well preserved in the city centre and is among the best-kept forts in Kerala. Palakkad is also known for its Carnatic music heritage and for traditional agraharams, the old Brahmin street settlements. Kerala roads are narrower and busier than the Tamil Nadu highways, so expect the average speed to drop from here onward. It is a good point for lunch if you did not stop in Coimbatore, and the local vegetarian meals served on banana leaf are excellent. Elapsed time: about seven hours thirty minutes.

Cultural Capital of Kerala
The road passes through Vadakkencherry and the Kuthiran tunnel, the first road tunnel in Kerala, cut through the hills between Palakkad and Thrissur and a welcome relief from the old winding ghat road. Thrissur, the Cultural Capital of Kerala, is home to the Kerala Sahitya Akademi, the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi and the Kerala Kalamandalam nearby, where Kathakali and Mohiniyattam are taught. At its heart stands the Vadakkunnathan Temple, a fine example of classical Kerala temple architecture, in whose grounds the spectacular Thrissur Pooram festival is held each April or May with caparisoned elephants and competing percussion ensembles. The town is also known for its gold jewellery showrooms and banana chips. Thrissur makes a good alternative overnight halt for groups that prefer a shorter first day or want to avoid Kochi traffic, with plenty of clean, comfortable hotels close to the highway. Elapsed time: about nine hours.

Venice of the East
Kochi, the Queen of the Arabian Sea, is the recommended overnight halt, reached around 3:30 PM on a 5:30 AM start. Arriving in the afternoon leaves time for an evening in Fort Kochi, with its Chinese fishing nets, Dutch and Portuguese buildings, St Francis Church and the Jewish Synagogue in Mattancherry. The next morning, NH66 heads south along the coast past Cherthala and its coir villages to Alappuzha, the Venice of the East, named for its dense network of canals, bridges and houseboat jetties. Alappuzha is the centre of Kerala's houseboat industry, with hundreds of converted kettuvallam rice barges moored along the Punnamada lake, where the Nehru Trophy snake boat race is held every August. A short stop at the Alappuzha beach and pier, or a one-hour shikara ride, makes a good mid-morning break before the final leg. Elapsed time: about ten hours thirty minutes over the two days.

Hidden Pearl of the Kerala Backwaters
The coastal highway continues through Haripad, Kayamkulam and Karunagappally to Kollam, the Cashew Capital of the World. For more than a century Kollam has been the centre of India's cashew processing industry, and hundreds of factories here shell, grade and pack cashews for export; the showrooms on the highway sell them fresh and far cheaper than in Bangalore. Kollam was also one of the oldest ports on the Malabar coast, trading with Chinese, Arab and Roman merchants for centuries, and it is the southern gateway to the Kerala backwaters. From Kollam, your driver turns inland through Kundara and Chittumala and crosses the Kallada river by road bridge onto Munroe Island, the Hidden Pearl of the Kerala Backwaters, about 27 kilometres from the city. The last few kilometres run along narrow lanes between canals and coconut groves, so the car will drop you at your homestay or the nearest boat point, and canoes take over from there. Total driving time: fourteen to sixteen hours over two days.

Booking a Car for hire in Bangalore with Tejas Travels takes under 5 minutes. Follow these 4 steps:
STEP1 | Contact Tejas Travels Call or WhatsApp +91 9980277773, or email info@tejastravels.com — available 24 hours, 7 days a week. Share your travel date, Bangalore pickup location (area or landmark — Whitefield, Electronic City, MG Road, Koramangala, KIA airport, hotel name, tech park), destination or full itinerary, number of passengers, and preferred vehicle. For KIA airport pickups, share the flight number — the driver tracks live flight status and adjusts pickup timing for delayed flights automatically. For luxury vehicles (Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Rolls-Royce), also mention the occasion — corporate, wedding, VIP event — so the team can ensure the best-condition vehicle and, where required, formal chauffeur attire. |
STEP2 | Receive Your Written Quote Within 2 hours of your enquiry, Tejas Travels sends a written quote via WhatsApp or email. The quote clearly itemizes every charge: vehicle hire rate (Rs/km or flat package), driver allowance (Rs 400-1,000/day depending on vehicle class), applicable toll estimates, and any interstate permit if applicable (Tamil Nadu for Ooty, Kerala for Wayanad, Andhra Pradesh for Tirupati). No verbal-only prices — everything in writing before you confirm. For corporate clients requiring reimbursements, a Proforma Invoice can be issued at this stage. If you want to compare two vehicle classes, request both quotes at the same time. |
STEP3 | Confirm Your Booking & Pay Advance Once satisfied with the written quote, confirm via WhatsApp or phone. A 15-20% advance payment confirms the booking. Payment: UPI (Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm), NEFT/IMPS/RTGS bank transfer, or credit/debit card via payment link. Advance receipt within 30 minutes. Confirmation includes: driver name and mobile, vehicle registration, departure time, pickup location, and full billing breakdown — all in writing. For luxury vehicles (Rolls-Royce Ghost, BMW 7 Series, Mercedes S-Class), advance may be higher due to limited fleet and Bangalore peak-date demand (wedding season November-February, New Year). |
STEP4 | Your Driver Arrives Early Your assigned Tejas Travels driver arrives at your confirmed Bangalore pickup point 15 minutes before scheduled departure. For KIA airport transfers, the driver coordinates at the Arrivals gate. The vehicle is clean, sanitized, fuelled, and ready. For wedding and VIP bookings, the driver arrives in formal attire. The driver calls 30 minutes before arrival as a courtesy. During the trip, the driver handles all routing, toll payments, and Bangalore traffic navigation. At trip end, balance payment is settled after deducting the advance. Any additional km or hours are billed at the pre-agreed rate. |
Quick Booking for Hire: WhatsApp +91 9980277773 with your vehicle preference, Bangalore pickup location, destination, and travel date. Written quote in 2 hours.

The bangalore to munroe island distance is about 720 to 740 kilometres by road via Salem, Coimbatore, Palakkad, Thrissur, Kochi, Alappuzha and Kollam. Driving time is 14 to 16 hours, so we recommend splitting the journey over two days.
Kochi is the most popular halt, reached by mid-afternoon on an early start. Thrissur is a good alternative for a shorter first day. Driving the full distance in one day is not recommended for passenger comfort and safety.
Fares start from around Rs 15 per kilometre for a sedan and depend on the vehicle and the number of days. Base fare, fuel and driver allowance are included. Toll and parking, interstate tax, driver bata after 9:45 PM and GST are extra, and the final rental is based on total kilometres and hours from our garage to garage.
The route crosses into Tamil Nadu at Attibele and into Kerala at Walayar, so both interstate permits are required. We arrange them before departure and bill them at actuals.
Call or WhatsApp +91 9980277773 or email info@tejastravels.com with your dates, pickup point, group size and itinerary. Once you approve the written quote, a 20 percent advance confirms the booking. We accept UPI, bank transfer and card payment links, and the balance is settled at trip end.
Yes. The island is connected by road bridge via Kundara and Chittumala, and the car can reach most homestays. Some lanes are very narrow, so for certain properties your driver will drop you at the nearest point or boat jetty.
Canoe tours are arranged locally through homestays, licensed boatmen or the Kollam DTPC canal cruise, and are paid directly to the operator. Your driver can take you to the boating point and wait while you cruise.
A small advance of around 20 percent of the total fare is typically collected at the time of booking to secure the vehicle and driver allocation, with the remaining balance payable at
the end of the trip either in cash directly to the driver or online via a payment link.
Tejas Travels maintains a fair, transparent, and tiered cancellation policy. All terms communicated in writing at booking confirmation.

November to February offers pleasant weather and good birdlife. The monsoon, from June to September, is lush but heavy rain can affect canoe trips, while April and May are hot and humid.
