Places to Visit in Belur

Chennakeshava Temple, Belur
The Chennakeshava Temple is the centrepiece of Belur and one of the most extraordinary works of stone craftsmanship anywhere in India. Commissioned in 1117 CE by King Vishnuvardhana of the Hoysala dynasty on the banks of the Yagachi River and completed 103 years later across three generations of builders, the temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu in his form as Chennakeshava, meaning the handsome Keshava. The exterior walls carry horizontal friezes of elephants, horses, scrolling foliage, mythological narratives from the Ramayana and Mahabharata, and rows of deities, all carved in the local chloritic schist that is relatively soft to work and hardens with age to a polished, almost metallic finish. The interior has 48 pillars, each carved differently from all the others, and the famous Madanika bracket figures, 42 celestial maidens depicted in various poses of beauty and grace, are considered among the masterpieces of Indian medieval sculpture. The most discussed of these is the Darpana Sundari, the woman holding a mirror, whose hollow and movable jewellery remains a subject of fascination. Entry to the temple is free and photography is permitted inside the complex. A licensed guide from the Archaeological Survey of India enhances the visit considerably.

Bangalore
Departure Point
Your journey to Ooty begins from Bangalore, the gateway to South India's most beloved hill stations. Pick-up is available from any part of the city — Koramangala, Electronic City, Whitefield, Hebbal, Yeshwanthpur, Marathahalli, or Majestic. The most common route out of Bangalore takes you onto NH275, the six-lane Mysore Expressway, which is one of the smoothest and best-maintained national highways in Karnataka. An early departure between 5 AM and 6 AM is strongly advised to clear Bangalore city limits before peak traffic begins. The first 50 km on the expressway are fast, comfortable, and lightly trafficked in the early hours, setting a pleasant tone for the journey ahead. Our drivers are experienced in choosing the optimal departure window and route based on real-time traffic conditions, ensuring that the first stretch of your Bangalore to Ooty road trip is efficient, calm, and enjoyable from the very first kilometre.

Nelamangala
Western city exit and NH 75 start
The Bangalore to Belur cab journey begins on NH 75 heading west from the city, covering approximately 30 kilometres to Nelamangala before the highway opens into the more comfortable driving conditions of the Karnataka plateau. Nelamangala is the western junction town of Bangalore where the NH 75 toward Hassan, Mangalore and the coast begins properly, and it is the most practical first pause point for fuel and a quick early breakfast before the highway run that follows. Departure from Bangalore before seven in the morning on a weekday or before six on a weekend is generally recommended to clear the city and Nelamangala before the outbound leisure traffic builds, particularly on Saturday mornings when this corridor carries significant traffic toward Hassan, Chikmagalur and the Malnad region. The road quality from Bangalore to Nelamangala is generally good, and the drive from the city to Nelamangala takes approximately 40 to 50 minutes in moderate traffic. The short highlight: Nelamangala - western city exit and NH 75 start; fuel and breakfast before the open highway.

Channarayapatna
Gateway to Shravanabelagola and the Hoysala district
From Nelamangala, NH 75 runs southwest for approximately 125 kilometres through Kunigal and on to Channarayapatna, passing through the transitional agricultural landscape between Bangalore's dry plateau and the greener, more irrigated countryside of the Hassan district. Kunigal, at around the 75-kilometre mark, is a convenient quick break point with fuel stations and small restaurants that are open from the early morning. The road through this section is a well-maintained four-lane national highway for most of the distance, and the drive is comfortable and relatively fast in light traffic. Channarayapatna, also known locally as CRP, is the junction town where travellers can turn off NH 75 toward Shravanabelagola, which is approximately 10 kilometres from here and is the recommended first stop on a full-day Hoysala temples trip from Bangalore. Those who want to include Shravanabelagola in their itinerary typically turn off at Channarayapatna, spend two hours at the Gomateshwara statue, and then continue toward Hassan and Belur. The short highlight: Kunigal - mid-route break town; Channarayapatna - gateway to Shravanabelagola and the Hoysala district.

Hassan
Hassan - district headquarters and overnight base for Belur Halebidu circuit
From Channarayapatna, the route continues on NH 75 for approximately 30 kilometres to Hassan, bringing the total from Bangalore to around 185 kilometres. Hassan is a comfortable mid-sized city and the district headquarters of Hassan district, serving as the most practical base for travellers visiting Belur, Halebidu and the other heritage sites in the region over two or more days. The city has a good selection of restaurants, hotels in different price categories and the basic urban services needed for a comfortable overnight stay. The Hasanamba Temple in the town centre is worth a note for travellers whose visit coincides with the Deepavali season when it opens for its one-week annual darshan. From Hassan, the route to Belur continues for a further 35 kilometres, and the road between Hassan and Belur passes through pleasant agricultural countryside that is noticeably greener than the landscape between Bangalore and Channarayapatna. The short highlight: Hassan - district headquarters and overnight base for Belur Halebidu circuit; Hasanamba Temple nearby.

Belur
Your Destination
The final 35 kilometres from Hassan to Belur completes the journey from Bangalore and is a pleasant stretch of state road through the farmland and tank-irrigated countryside of the Hassan district. The road between Hassan and Belur is well surfaced for most of its length and passes through small villages and the occasional temple complex, with the broader landscape of the Western Ghats foothills becoming more visible on the southern horizon as Belur approaches. The Chennakeshava Temple gopuram, the tall decorated entrance tower built in the Vijayanagara style, is visible from a distance as the road enters Belur town, and it serves as the natural visual landmark for arrival. The Yagachi River that runs through the town is also crossed on the approach, and the riverbank setting of the temple complex becomes apparent on first sight. Travellers on a Bangalore to Belur taxi departing the city by six or seven in the morning typically arrive at Belur by ten to eleven, leaving a full morning and afternoon for the temple, Halebidu, and the Yagachi Dam. The short highlight: Final 35-km approach to Belur through Hassan district farmland; Yagachi River and Chennakeshava Temple gopuram visible on arrival.

Urbania Packages for the Bangalore to Belur Route
Four package structures cover almost every group on this route, all including the vehicle, fuel and a trained chauffeur, quoted garage to garage in writing.
Temple Day Trip
A 6:00 am departure, Belur through the morning with a guide, lunch, Halebidu in the early afternoon, back in Bangalore by evening. A twelve-hour day that works, provided the group is content with the two temples and does not try to add Shravanabelagola. Full recliners are what make the return leg bearable.
Temple and Coffee Weekend
The version we recommend. Belur and Halebidu on day one, a night on a Chikmagalur estate 25 km away, a plantation walk or Mullayanagiri on the second morning before driving home. It turns a rushed day into a proper weekend, and the accommodation is far better than anything in Belur town. If Mullayanagiri is in the plan we secure the hill pass at booking.
School and College Heritage Package
The Hoysala temples are a standing fixture on Karnataka history and architecture syllabuses. Twelve to sixteen seater Urbania with verified chauffeurs, GST invoicing and documentation supplied to the institution, plus multi-vehicle coordination for larger batches. What Our Customers Say About Our Urbania Services in Bangalore
Why Choose Tejas Tours and Travels?
Frequently Asked Questions — Bangalore to Belur Urbania
Approximately 220 km on NH75 via Nelamangala, Kunigal, Yediyur, Channarayapatna and Hassan, then the Belur road northwest. Expect 4 to 4.5 hours including one halt. Four-laned nearly the whole way with no ghat and no state border, so no permit or entry tax applies.
Ninety minutes to two hours, longer with a guide. Most visitors give it forty minutes and miss almost everything: the madanikai bracket figures under the eaves, the base friezes where no two elephants match, the lathe-turned pillars and the mandapa ceiling. Halebidu is 16 km on and needs another hour.
Yes. Licensed guides are available at the entrance and charge separately from the vehicle fare. Belur is a building where the detail only resolves when someone points it out, and the difference between a guided and unguided visit is larger than at almost any other site in the state. If you take one, tell us at booking so we allow a seat.
Yes, with a 6:00 am departure: Belur through the morning, lunch, Halebidu in the early afternoon and back in Bangalore by evening. It makes a twelve-hour day and usually returns after 9:45 pm, so driver bata applies. Adding Shravanabelagola as well is over-ambitious; if you want all three, take the weekend version.
Garage to garage with fuel included: Rs 40 per km. Driver allowance is Rs 600 per day, with tolls at actuals and no permit or entry tax. Temple entry, camera charges, guide fees and any hill entry pass are paid at the site.
Chikmagalur, about 25 km northwest, which is actually closer to Belur than Hassan is. The plantation properties around Chikmagalur, Aldur and Mudigere are far better than anything in Belur town, and they turn a rushed temple day into a proper weekend with an estate walk or Mullayanagiri on the second morning.
Yes, if you plan to drive up. The hill road above Chikmagalur runs on an online vehicle entry pass booked in advance through the district portal, with a capped number released daily in time slots and a fee verified at the check post. Weekend slots go early. Tell us at enquiry and we raise it against your vehicle and dates.
The compound is open through the day but Chennakeshava is a living temple and the inner sanctum keeps its own timings, with a break through the middle of the day. Plan a morning or later-afternoon visit if darshan matters to you. Footwear comes off at the compound entrance and you will be walking on open stone, which is worth knowing between March and May.
More than 72 hours ahead: no charge, full advance refunded in 5 to 7 working days. Between 48 and 72 hours the charge is 10 per cent, 24 to 48 hours 25 per cent, 12 to 24 hours 50 per cent, under 12 hours 75 per cent. School and institutional bookings run on contract terms. If a site is closed on your date we reshape the itinerary rather than cancelling the trip.
No. Tejas Tours and Travels does not cover passengers insurance by the company. Our vehicles carry the statutory commercial vehicle insurance required under Indian motor law, chauffeurs are police verified and PSV licensed, and the fleet is serviced at authorised Force Motors centres. Schools and institutions typically arrange personal accident cover under their own policy.
