Nazhi Kinaru
A small, ancient well just a short walk from the temple, remarkable because it yields fresh, sweet water though it lies only metres from the sea. Pilgrims traditionally bathe in the sea and then at Nazhi Kinaru before entering the temple. It is a small sight but one of the most talked-about on any Tiruchendur visit.
Valli Cave
Close to the temple, this rock-cut cave shrine is dedicated to Valli, the consort of Lord Murugan. The cave is cool and quiet, with carvings inside, and it makes a peaceful stop after the crowds of the main temple.
Tiruchendur Beach
The wide beach in front of the temple is where pilgrims take their holy dip before darshan. The sea here is usually calmer than on the west coast, but currents can still be strong, so children should be watched closely. Evenings on the beach, with the temple lit up behind you, are memorable.
Kulasekarapattinam Mutharamman Temple
About 15 kilometres south, this temple is famous for its Dasara festival, when thousands of devotees dress in elaborate costumes as deities, kings and animals to fulfil vows. Kulasekarapattinam is also the site of a new ISRO rocket launch complex under development, putting this small coastal town on the national map.
Manapad
About 18 kilometres south, Manapad is a picturesque fishing village with the Holy Cross Church standing on a sandy headland above the sea. The village is associated with St Francis Xavier, who is believed to have stayed here in the sixteenth century. The lighthouse, the headland views and the quiet beach make it a lovely half-day outing.
Navathirupathi Temples
Between Tirunelveli and Tiruchendur, along the banks of the Thamirabarani, lie nine ancient Vishnu temples known as the Navathirupathi, each linked to one of the nine planets. They include Alwarthirunagari, birthplace of the saint Nammalvar, and all are Divya Desams sung by the Alwars. Pilgrims often visit all nine in a single day, which is only practical with a private car.
Panchalankurichi Fort
About 60 kilometres away near Ottapidaram, Panchalankurichi was the stronghold of Veerapandiya Kattabomman, the palayakkarar who resisted the British East India Company in the late eighteenth century. The rebuilt fort and memorial tell his story and make a meaningful stop for history-minded families.
