The Winch and Rope Car
You can climb the nearly 700 steps, take the gentler elephant path, or ride up. The electric winch, a small rail car pulled up the slope, has carried pilgrims since the 1960s, while the rope car, opened in 2004, reaches the top in a few minutes with wide views of the town and hills. Both are hugely popular with elderly travellers; queues are long on festival days, so go early.
Thiru Avinankudi Temple
At the foot of the hill, this ancient temple is traditionally considered the actual third Padai Veedu mentioned in Tamil devotional literature. Many pilgrims worship here first before climbing. It is quieter than the hilltop and has fine old stone carvings.
Idumban Temple
On the smaller hill facing the main temple stands the shrine of Idumban, the devotee who, according to legend, carried two hills on a pole across his shoulders. That story is the origin of the kavadi, the decorated burden that pilgrims carry to Palani, and devotees traditionally visit Idumban before Murugan.
Periyanayaki Amman Temple
An old temple in the town centre with a tall gopuram and a large tank, dedicated to the goddess Periyanayaki alongside Shiva. It is the base for several processions during the Thai Poosam festival and offers a calmer, more local experience of Palani.
Palani Panchamirtham
No visit is complete without it. The temple’s panchamirtham, a thick sweet made from bananas, jaggery, ghee, honey and cardamom, holds a GI tag and is sold in sealed tins at the official counters. Most families carry several tins back home as prasadam for relatives.
Varadhamanadhi Dam
A small dam at the base of the Palani hills, a short drive from town, surrounded by coconut groves and with the hills rising behind. It is a pleasant, quiet place to spend an evening after the temple and a good stop for children.
Kodaikanal
Sixty-five kilometres up a winding ghat road with views back over the plains, Kodaikanal, the Princess of Hill Stations, is the natural extension of a Palani trip. Hosur stands high on the Deccan plateau, and its mild weather made British officers call it Little England. Steel City of Tamil Nadu
A quick run south passes Dharmapuri, the turn for Hogenakkal Falls, where the Kaveri crashes through rocky gorges and coracle rides take you close to the spray. The road then drops through the Thoppur ghat into Salem, the Steel City, known also for sago, silk and its own mangoes. The Shevaroy Hills and the hill station of Yercaud rise to the north-east. At Salem your driver leaves NH44 and turns west onto NH544, avoiding the city centre entirely. The highway plazas around the junction are good for a mid-morning stretch. A short run brings you into Erode, one of the world’s largest trading centres for turmeric, which is why it is called the Turmeric City or the Yellow City. The regulated turmeric market sets prices that are followed across the country. Erode is also a major textile hub, and its wholesale cloth market draws traders from across South India. It is the birthplace of the social reformer Periyar E V Ramasamy, whose home is now a memorial. Here the route leaves the highway and heads south on the Kangeyam road. The handloom town of Chennimalai, with its hilltop Murugan temple, is a short detour for devotees.
Old Capital of the Kongu Region
Continuing south, the road reaches Dharapuram on the banks of the Amaravathi river. This was once an important seat of power in the Kongu region, the western part of Tamil Nadu, and several old temples survive from that period. The Kadu Hanumantharaya Swamy Temple is the best known and draws steady crowds, especially on Saturdays. The town is a sensible place for a short tea break, as the remaining stretch to Palani has fewer good stops. From here the Palani hills begin to appear on the horizon ahead.
