Kateel is one of the great centres of Yakshagana, the night-long dance drama of coastal Karnataka. Saavira Kambada Basadi, Moodbidri
Moodbidri, a short drive from Kateel, is called the Jain Kashi of the South for its cluster of historic basadis. The finest is the Saavira Kambada Basadi, the thousand-pillared temple built in the 15th century, where it is said no two pillars are carved alike. The stonework and the quiet town around it make this a strong half-day stop for anyone interested in architecture.
Sasihithlu Beach
Around 20 kilometres from Kateel, Sasihithlu is where the Nandini and Shambhavi rivers run into the Arabian Sea. The long, clean beach has hosted surfing events and still feels far less crowded than the city beaches. It is a good place to end a temple day, and the river mouth at low tide is worth the walk.
Pilikula Nisargadhama
At Vamanjoor, on the way between Kateel and Mangaluru, Pilikula is a large nature and culture park with a biological park, boating lake, science centre, planetarium and a heritage village showing a traditional Tulu Nadu Guthu house. It works well for families with children who need a break from temple visits.
Kudroli Gokarnanatheshwara Temple
In Mangaluru city, this temple was consecrated in 1912 with the blessings of Sree Narayana Guru and is known for its gold-toned gopuram and bright interiors. It is the centre of the Mangaluru Dasara celebrations, when the whole city lights up for the procession. Evening visits are the most atmospheric.
Kadri Manjunatha Temple
One of the oldest temples in Mangaluru, set at the foot of Kadri hills. Its bronze Lokeshwara idol is counted among the finest early bronzes in South India, and the temple has a series of natural water tanks fed by springs, along with small caves above. It is a calm, shaded stop.
Panambur Beach
Next to New Mangalore Port, Panambur is the city beach best suited to groups, with lifeguards, water sports in season and food stalls. The sunset here is easy to catch before heading back to your hotel in Mangaluru or Kateel.

The district capital takes its name from the goddess Hasanamba, whose temple opens to devotees only for a short period each year around Deepavali. The kateel distance from bangalore is approximately 370 kilometres via Hassan, Sakleshpur, the Shiradi Ghat and Mangaluru. A bus takes eight to nine hours including meal halts, so a 5:00 AM departure crosses the ghat in daylight and reaches Kateel by early afternoon.
The Shiradi Ghat is sometimes closed or restricted for heavy vehicles during the monsoon or road works. In that case we use the Charmadi Ghat route via Chikkamagaluru, Ujire and Moodbidri. We confirm the status before departure and explain any change in the quote.
