Devarayanadurga Fort and Sunrise Viewpoints
Ruined fort walls, gateways and bastions ring the upper slopes. The devarayanadurga trek along these walls is short but steep in places, and the rocky ledges near the top are popular for photography. A devarayanadurga sunrise on a misty monsoon or winter morning, with clouds drifting below the hill, is the highlight for many visitors. Carry water and wear good shoes.
Namada Chilume
A few kilometres from the hill, namada chilume is a small natural spring that flows from a rock. Legend says Lord Rama shot an arrow into the rock to find water during his exile, and the spring has flowed ever since. The name comes from the tradition of applying the "namada" mark on the forehead with its water. The surrounding forest has a small deer park and shaded paths.
Siddaganga Matha
At Kyatsandra near Tumakuru, Siddaganga Matha is one of Karnataka's best-known monasteries, famous for providing free education, food and shelter to thousands of students. The hill temple of Siddalingeshwara and the calm campus are worth a short visit on the way.
Goravanahalli Mahalakshmi Temple
About twenty-five kilometres from Devarayanadurga, near Koratagere, this temple to Goddess Mahalakshmi draws large crowds, especially on Fridays. Many families add it to a Devarayanadurga day trip for a combined temple circuit.
Madhugiri Fort
Around forty kilometres away, Madhugiri is home to one of the largest monolithic hills in Asia, topped by a historic fort. The madhugiri fort trek is steep and exposed in places, suited to fit trekkers who start early and avoid rainy days, while others can enjoy the view of the massive rock from the town.
Siddarabetta
Near Koratagere, Siddarabetta is a rocky hill with natural caves and a Shiva shrine, long associated with sages and medicinal plants. The climb between boulders and through caves makes it a fun, short adventure for families with older children.
Mandaragiri Jain Temple
Just off NH48 on the way, Mandaragiri has a hill with old Jain shrines and a striking modern temple shaped like the peacock-feather whisk carried by Digambara monks. It is an easy and unusual stop for photographs.
