Paatha Gutta
A few kilometres from the main hill, Paatha Gutta, meaning old hill, is traditionally regarded as the original abode of the deity. The small temple here is calmer than the main shrine, and many devotees visit it to complete their pilgrimage. It is a short drive and takes less than an hour.
Bhongir Fort
About 15 kilometres away, Bhongir Fort crowns a huge, isolated monolithic rock that rises abruptly from the plain. Associated with the Western Chalukya ruler Tribhuvanamalla Vikramaditya VI in the eleventh century, the fort has ruined gateways, cisterns and stables, and the climb up steps cut into the rock rewards you with wide views over the countryside. Go in the early morning or late afternoon to avoid the heat.
Kolanupaka Jain Temple
Around 20 kilometres from Yadagirigutta, Kolanupaka is home to an ancient Shwetambara Jain temple, a major pilgrimage centre for Jains, known for its idol of Lord Rishabhanatha, traditionally said to be carved from jade, and its fine marble work. The village also has the Someshwara temple, associated with the Veerashaiva tradition, and a small archaeological museum. It is a peaceful and rewarding detour.
Surendrapuri
Very close to Yadagirigutta, Surendrapuri is a large mythological theme complex with detailed replicas of famous temples from across India and life-size sculptures depicting scenes from the Ramayana, Mahabharata and Puranas. It is especially popular with families and children as an introduction to Indian mythology.
Swarnagiri Venkateswara Temple
Near Bhongir, the recently built Swarnagiri temple dedicated to Lord Venkateswara sits on a hill and has become a popular stop for devotees visiting Yadagirigutta. Its gold-toned architecture and panoramic views make it a pleasant addition on the same day.
Pochampally
About 40 kilometres away, Pochampally is famous across India for its ikat weaving, where threads are tie-dyed before being woven into sarees and fabrics with bold geometric patterns. The village has been recognised internationally as one of the best tourism villages, and visitors can watch weavers at work and buy directly from cooperative outlets.
Pillalamarri Banyan Tree
On the drive itself, a short detour near Mahabubnagar leads to Pillalamarri, a banyan tree said to be around 700 years old whose aerial roots have grown into a small forest covering nearly three acres. A shaded park, a small museum and an aquarium surround it. It makes a welcome break on the long NH44 stretch, on the way in or on the return.
