Poovar Backwaters and Mangrove Cruise

Climb the red-and-white lighthouse at Lighthouse Beach for the widest view of the coastline, then walk down to the Vizhinjam fishing harbour, where the morning catch comes in on colourful boats.
Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple
Roughly 30 kilometres north in Thiruvananthapuram, this temple to Lord Vishnu in his reclining form is one of the most revered in South India. Its seven-tier gopuram overlooks a large temple tank. There is a strict dress code — men in a mundu with no shirt, women in a saree or long skirt — and cameras and phones must be deposited outside.
Neyyar Dam and Wildlife Sanctuary
About 35 kilometres inland, the Neyyar reservoir sits at the foot of the Western Ghats with the Agasthyamala range rising behind it. Boating on the reservoir, the crocodile rehabilitation centre and the forest trails make it a refreshing half day away from the coast, and a good contrast for families travelling with children.
Padmanabhapuram Palace
Across the border in Tamil Nadu, around 40 kilometres from Poovar, stands the former seat of the Travancore kings and one of the finest examples of traditional Kerala timber architecture. Carved rosewood ceilings, murals and a polished black floor fill the complex. It is closed on Mondays, so plan your sightseeing day around it.

Temple City
Madurai is the natural overnight halt and one of the great cities of South India. Known as the "Temple City" and as "Thoonga Nagaram, the City That Never Sleeps", it comes alive after dark with busy food streets and flower markets. The Meenakshi Amman Temple, with its fourteen towering gopurams and the Hall of Thousand Pillars, deserves an evening visit, and the Thirumalai Nayakkar Mahal is a short walk away. Arriving in the early afternoon gives time for both, plus a jigarthanda to finish the day. Breaking the journey here turns a punishing single drive into a relaxed two-day road trip.
Halwa City
Day two starts on a fast, quiet stretch of NH44 through the southern plains, with the Western Ghats rising along the western horizon. Tirunelveli is the "Halwa City" of Tamil Nadu, and the wheat halwa from its old shops near the Nellaiappar Temple has a following across the state.
