Top Slip and the Elephant Camp
On the Tamil Nadu side, top slip is a hill-top clearing in the Anamalai Tiger Reserve named after the colonial practice of sliding teak logs down its slopes. The nearby elephant camp, van safaris and short treks make it worth a few hours, and a topslip safari can be combined with Parambikulam in a single trip.
Aliyar Dam and Monkey Falls
About 25 kilometres south of Pollachi on the Valparai road, Aliyar reservoir sits at the foot of the Anamalai hills with a park and boating area. A little further up the ghat, Monkey Falls is a natural cascade with a shallow pool for a refreshing dip.
Masani Amman Temple, Anaimalai
On the banks of the Aliyar river in Anaimalai town, this revered temple enshrines the goddess Masani Amman in a reclining form. Many travellers stop for darshan on the way to the reserve, and it draws large crowds during the annual festival.

The region is equally known for turmeric, with its regulated market among the most important turmeric trading hubs anywhere. Just before Erode, the highway crosses the Kaveri near Komarapalayam, where the river is wide and slow, and the fertile banks are lined with sugarcane and banana plantations. Erode was also the birthplace of the social reformer Periyar E. V. Ramasamy, whose memorial house in the town is open to visitors. Your driver will stay on the bypass and continue towards Perundurai, where the route leaves the main Coimbatore highway and heads south through farming country towards Tiruppur and Palladam. Coconut City of Tamil Nadu
Pollachi is the Coconut City of Tamil Nadu, and you will see why long before you arrive: coconut groves stretch unbroken on both sides of the road, and lorries loaded with nuts, copra and coir head for markets across India. The town hosts one of the largest coconut and jaggery trading markets in the south, and its weekly cattle market has run for generations. Pollachi's green, gentle scenery has made it one of the favourite shooting locations of the Tamil and Malayalam film industries, and locals are used to spotting film crews among the palms. This is the last proper town before the forest, so it is the natural lunch halt; the restaurants here serve hearty Kongu-style meals. It is also the place to buy water, snacks and anything else you need, since there are very few shops inside the reserves. If you arrive after about 1:30 PM, we recommend halting overnight in Pollachi and entering the reserve fresh the next morning. Elapsed time: about seven hours.
Timber Slide of the Anamalai Hills
The climb to Top Slip begins almost immediately after the check post, with the road winding up through eleven hairpin bends into dense forest. Top Slip, the Timber Slide of the Anamalai Hills, takes its name from the British era, when teak felled in the surrounding forests was slid down the slopes from the hilltop to the plains below for transport to the coast. Today it is a forest department centre inside the Anamalai Tiger Reserve, with a reception, a small interpretation centre, basic accommodation and an elephant camp where trained camp elephants are cared for by Malasar mahouts. Van safaris and short guided treks start from here, and if you have time, a Top Slip safari makes a fine prelude to Parambikulam. The grasslands around the clearing often have spotted deer and gaur grazing in the open, and Malabar giant squirrels and great hornbills are regularly seen in the canopy. The bangalore to parambikulam distance is about 450 to 470 kilometres via Salem, Erode, Tiruppur, Pollachi, Sethumadai and Top Slip. The drive takes nine and a half to ten and a half hours including meal halts.
Although the reserve is in Kerala, the only road access runs through Tamil Nadu via the Sethumadai check post and Top Slip in the Anamalai Tiger Reserve. There is no direct road from the Kerala side.
The Sethumadai check post admits vehicles from morning to a mid-afternoon cut-off, and vehicles must leave the reserves by early evening. Timings are set by the forest department and can change, so we confirm them before your trip. Leave Bangalore by 4:30 AM, or halt overnight at Pollachi.
Fares start from around Rs 15 per kilometre for a sedan and depend on the vehicle and the number of days. Base fare, fuel and driver allowance are included. Toll, parking, forest vehicle entry fees, interstate tax, driver bata after 9:45 PM and GST are extra, and the final rental is based on total kilometres and hours from our garage to garage.
The route needs a Tamil Nadu permit and a Kerala permit for the final stretch into Parambikulam. We arrange both and bill them at actuals.
Your cab can drive the public forest road through Top Slip to Parambikulam after paying the entry fees. Safaris, treks and rafting inside the reserve are conducted only in forest department vehicles and boats, booked through the official eco-tourism programme, while your car waits at the base.
