Aghanashini River and Estuary

A small waterfall and cave temple near Honnavar, a short climb from the road, with a viewpoint looking out over the Arabian Sea.

Junction Town with a Hoysala Gem
Arsikere is a major railway junction connecting the Bangalore, Hubballi and Mangaluru lines, which has made it a busy trading town. Few travellers realise it also holds the Chandramouleshwara Temple, a fine example of Hoysala architecture with detailed carving and an unusual layout. If you are interested in Hoysala design but short of time for Belur and Halebidu, this temple is a worthwhile fifteen minute stop, just a short distance from the highway. The countryside around Arsikere is dotted with coconut groves and small lakes that fill up after the monsoon. Elapsed time: about two hours and forty-five minutes.
Gateway to the Bhadra Country
Kadur is a junction town where roads branch toward Chikkamagaluru and Birur, and the landscape begins its gradual change from dry plains to the greener Malnad. Tarikere follows, sitting close to the Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary and tiger reserve, and the hills of the Western Ghats become visible on the horizon. Areca nut plantations start to appear, a sign that you are entering the Malnad belt. Traffic is light on this section, and the road passes small villages with roadside stalls selling seasonal fruit. Many drivers take a short tea break here before the run into Bhadravathi. Elapsed time: about four hours.
Steel Town of Karnataka
Bhadravathi grew around the Visvesvaraya Iron and Steel Plant, one of the oldest steel works in India, established under the Mysore rulers with the guidance of Sir M. Visvesvaraya. The town was also home to the Mysore Paper Mills, and together these industries earned it the Steel Town title. It sits on the Bhadra river, and the Lakshmi Narasimha Temple, built in the Hoysala style, is an elegant stop in the old part of town. The highway keeps close to the river here, with coconut and areca plantations on both sides. Elapsed time: about four hours and fifteen minutes.
Gateway to Malnad
Shivamogga is the largest city on the route and the traditional gateway to the Malnad, the rain-fed hill region of the Western Ghats. It sits on the Tunga river and is the starting point for trips to Agumbe, Kodachadri and Kuvempu's birthplace at Kuppalli. Tyavarekoppa Lion and Tiger Safari lies just outside the city. Jog Falls is where the Sharavathi river drops about 253 metres in four separate streams known as Raja, Rani, Rocket and Roarer. It is one of the highest plunge waterfalls in India and at its most spectacular from July to October, when the dam upstream releases water. The viewpoints and the long stairway to the base make this a natural one to two hour stop. On weekends the parking area fills quickly, and your driver will plan your arrival accordingly.
