Manalar Dam
A few kilometres from the main Meghamalai settlement, Manalar Dam sits ringed by tea gardens, and from its edge you look straight down into the deep Cumbum Valley and the villages of Theni district far below. It is one of the best spots on the plateau for photographs, especially late in the afternoon when the valley catches the light.
Highwavys Dam
Surrounded by tea bushes and forested slopes, Highwavys Dam is the most photographed reservoir on the plateau. It looks its best between July and November when the water is high and the greenery is at its richest. The still water, drifting cloud and plantation rows make it a natural stop for any meghamalai road trip.
Maharaja Mettu Viewpoint
This breezy grassy ridge opens toward the Cumbum Valley on one side and the forests stretching toward Periyar on the other. On clear mornings you can see ridge after ridge fading into the horizon; in the monsoon you watch rain columns moving across the plains below. It is the most dramatic viewpoint in the area and worth an early start.
Vellimalai — The Silver Mountain
Vellimalai, around 1,650 metres, is often described as the heart of Meghamalai. Clouds seem to rest on its green summits, and the Vaigai river, which flows past Madurai, originates in this area.
Iravangalar and Venniyar Dams
Meghamalai holds several reservoirs, and these two quieter ones see far fewer visitors than Manalar and Highwavys. The drive to them passes through thicker forest fringe, which makes it a good stretch for spotting gaur, Malabar giant squirrels and hornbills.
Meghamalai Wildlife Sanctuary and Tiger Reserve
The forests around the plateau are now part of the Srivilliputhur-Megamalai Tiger Reserve, one of the richest biodiversity zones in Tamil Nadu. Elephants, gaur, leopards, the grizzled giant squirrel and many endemic birds live here. Sightings from the road are common around dawn and dusk, which is one reason vehicle movement after dark is restricted.
Meghamalai Falls
At the foothills of the range, this cascade flows strongly after the monsoon and makes a refreshing stop on the way up or down. It is quieter than Suruli and fits easily into the return journey toward Theni.

The Krishnagiri Dam and the old hill fort are visible from the highway, and the junction here, where the Chennai highway branches off, is the busiest on the route, so drivers keep to the left lane for the NH44 split. A fast four-lane run through granite hills and orchards takes you past Dharmapuri, the turn for Hogenakkal Falls, and down to Salem. The city sits in a bowl surrounded by the Shevaroy Hills, with Yercaud a winding thirty-kilometre climb away. Salem is known as the Steel City for the Salem Steel Plant,. On a direct run the driver uses the bypass to avoid city traffic. Elapsed time: roughly four hours.

The highway continues south to Karur on the banks of the Amaravathi river. Karur is one of India's largest exporters of home furnishings, and its weaving units supply bed linen, curtains and table covers to stores across Europe and America. Factory outlets near the highway sell export-surplus stock at very low prices, which makes this a favourite shopping stop on the return leg.
